This sentence sounds to me like they may be giving him a farewell game, as they should.
Polak will be named in the squad  :thumbsup

While I like the romantic notion of Polak returning from a life threatening injury to become a 'crucial part of our future success' I just can't see it happening. Firstly where would you play him and who would he replace? IS he playing better than McGuane, Thursfield or Moore? Should he claim the spot of Riewoldt, Post or Vickery? I just believe, even if he was at full fitness, that he would struggle to fight his way back into the side at the moment.

I'm sorry to say but if we retain him it would be more through sympathetic reasons than professional ones.

Wish I thought differently but its hard to see it from any other way

Stripes

Much better option than Moore who is severely overrated.  Had one decent year last year but has done sweet FA since.  Moore doesn't really offer much.  Polly a better player IMO.

GO TIGES!!!

Here's confirmation...

Key position player Graham Polak is also a step closer to returning to senior football, joining the extended squad for this Sunday's game against Sydney.

Polak set for AFL return
abc.net.au
August 6, 2009 12:20:00

Richmond defender Graham Polak is set to play his first AFL match in more than a year when the Tigers meet Sydney this weekend.

Polak has not played for Richmond since suffering severe head injuries when he was hit by a tram in June last year.

He returned to preseason training in the summer before playing much of this season in the Tigers' reserve side.

Richmond coach Jade Rawlings says Polak's form is now good enough for a return to the senior side.

"Everyone's been rapt with his progress," Rawlings said.

"He wants to be treated like a senior footballer, which is our expectation that he should be able to now that he's got through the significance of the injury.

"And he's performing at a level now where he can be considered.

"We wouldn't have put him in the squad if he wasn't now playing at a sustainable brand that could stand up in the AFL."

Bad decision by the medical staff & the club if this was to happen. His brain would not have fully recovered & would be far too slow moving up a level at this stage & if he is good enough now to play AFL senior football, then he should be put in cotten wool & retained for next pre-season matches.

Well, i dont wish to make any assumptions but i would ve thought that the medical staff would know a little more about Polly's condition than say, yourself or me!Polly would know what he is capable of and i dare say that the lawyers acting for RFC wouldve suggested an independant evaluation of Polly before being cleared to play!

What is his form @ Coburg like?

Is this a 'goodbye Polly' gesture?

The medical call regarding Polak is made by his specialists  from the accident not the RFC medicos - so if they say he right to go he is right to go

Polak says AFL return would be a dream
Sam Lienert
August 6, 2009 - 11:04PM

Richmond's Graham Polak says it will be a "dream come true" if he can return to the AFL side before the end of the season.

The 25-year-old key position player, who has not represented the senior side since being hit by a tram in June last year, has been named in a 25-man squad for Sunday's match against Sydney at the MCG.

While it is unlikely he will make the final 22 this week, it is the closest he has been so far to returning to the AFL team.

The incident resulted in brain bruising and required Polak to spend several days in an induced coma.

He said at the start of this season he was given little hope of playing football this year, but after some good form with Richmond's VFL affiliate Coburg now feels he is capable of playing at the top level.

"Over the last few weeks it's been really good, the skill level has been growing and growing and I feel I'm on the way up," Polak told the Nine Network's AFL Footy Show on Thursday night.

"To get a chance is obviously not my call at the moment, but if I get a chance I'll take it with both hands and relish it.

"I never knew when I got out of hospital that this year especially I'd be playing AFL football.

"I knew I wanted to strive for that, it was a goal of mine to get back this year, but for it to actually happen would be a dream come true.

"At the start of the year I sat down with a doctor from the Epworth (Hospital) and asked him 'Honestly, do you think I'll be able to get back this year'?

"He said 'Honestly mate, I don't think you could'.

"To be back straight away playing some good footy now, I've hopefully proven them wrong, the critics wrong and everyone else wrong.

"I'm feeling great at the moment and I look forward to the opportunity to come."
