Tigers vs Lions

KB's pumping us up in the Queensland press...

Richo's timely return
Courier Mail
By Marco Monteverde
July 23, 2008

AN in-form Richmond outfit bolstered by the almost certain return of talisman Matthew Richardson is poised to further expose the Brisbane Lions as premiership pretenders.

That's the belief of Tigers legend Kevin Bartlett, who says the Lions' losses to Melbourne and Essendon in the past four weeks have put an enormous dent in their credibility.

In contrast, the 10th-placed Tigers are aiming for a hat-trick of wins as they make a finals charge at Telstra Dome on Saturday night..

Richmond also has the wood on Brisbane, with the Lions not having beaten the Tigers since 2004.

"We know the Tigers are on the improve," Bartlett said.

"Brisbane hit back against West Coast, but it will be interesting to see whether they can hold out a very exuberant and a very enthusiastic Richmond side.

"Brisbane has made its task of making the finals a lot more difficult by losing to Melbourne and Essendon. They were shock losses.

"I saw the game against Melbourne. The Lions were very poor."

Bartlett, who won five premierships as a player with Richmond between 1967 and 1980, said the Tigers had gained belief from winning their past two matches without Richardson, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.

"Richmond are playing some good footy and now with Richo coming back into the side, confidence will grow," he said.

But Bartlett was wary of writing off a Lions side containing Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw.

"The big concern will always be those two - the forward line of the Lions is just so potent," he said.

"But this is the area where the Tigers have probably made their biggest improvement this year - their backline."

Lions pair Jed Adcock (quad) and Joel Macdonald (ankle) are set to return from injury this weekend, but Bradd Dalziell is certain to keep his place after his great weekend debut effort against West Coast.

Attacking weapon Anthony Corrie - if selected - will play his 50th game for the Lions on Saturday night.

Power throws scare through Lions camp
Fairfax news | July 23, 2008 - 7:54PM

Inspirational Brisbane Lions co-captain Luke Power is racing the clock to be fit for a crucial AFL clash against Richmond after missing training.

The Lions are keeping their fingers crossed Power will complete training on Friday and take part in Saturday night's Telstra Dome showdown with the Tigers.

Power was again pivotal for the Lions with 31 possessions in Brisbane's 46-point thumping of West Coast at the Gabba last weekend, despite nursing the shoulder complaint.

Lions coach Leigh Matthews was confident Power would not be added to their injury list when he assessed his side on Monday.

But Power sent a scare through the team when he did not front for training.

Jed Adcock (quad) and Joel Macdonald (ankle) also face fitness tests this week but Jonathan Brown (shoulder) and Simon Black (hip) are expected to back up for the clash against bogey team Richmond after soldiering on against West Coast.

The Lions (6th; 9-7 record) have not beaten Richmond (10th; 7-8) since 2004 and lost their last three games in Melbourne.

The drought against the Tigers includes a draw last season in which Brisbane Lions' Josh Drummond famously made a stunning interception in the dying seconds to deny Richmond their first win of 2007 and ensure scores remained locked up at fulltime.

"Results show they have the wood on us for the last few years so we will be looking to turn the tables on them," Drummond said.

"They are a pretty quick running side, we have trouble at times with those sort of sides.

"But this is an important game for the club. We have a bit of confidence from the weekend so hopefully we can take another step forward against the Tigers."

The Lions snapped a worrying two game losing run against sides outside the top eight against West Coast to keep their hopes of a first finals campaign in four years alive.

"We know our best footy is still to come. We need to produce that in what will be an important six weeks for the club (until the end of the regular season)," Drummond said.

"Our best form is ahead of us and we have a lot of improvement. But we know we are no finals certainties."

Whether Power plays or not I'm just glad Lappin is out. He brought his own footy last year in that draw.

Betting suspended over big-name Lion omissions rumours (Courier Mail)

Rumours over big-name omissions hit bets on Lions
Courier Mail | July 24, 2008

BETTING on Brisbane's round-17 AFL clash was suspended after word of a big-name omission from the Lions prompted a plunge on the Tigers.

Bookmakers had concerns inside information on team selections had been leaked to the market and suspected it could only be about captain Jonathan Brown.

But the reigning Coleman medallist completed a full training session last night which is a rare occurrence under his modified training regime.

Instead, it is his co-captain Luke Power who is in doubt, while Daniel Bradshaw is also sore and was restricted to light duties.

Sportingbet Australia's betting manager Bill Richmond said Brown was one of only a few players in the competition capable of causing such a plunge.

"There are only a few players who would move a betting market that far," he said.

"It would suggest one of Brisbane's absolute superstars must be in big doubt."

On the evidence from last night's training session, Power looms as the most likely withdrawal.

Darwin-based Sportingbet took three separate bets totalling more than $20,000 before suspending betting on the game.

The plunge started with a $6000 bet at $1.90, then a $10,000 punt at $1.87, and a final $5000 at $1.80.

Betting reopened last night with the Tigers paying $1.65 for a win.

The TAB took a $20,000 bet on Richmond and it is understood Centrebet was also flooded with big money for the Tigers during the day.

Richmond said the size and timing of the bets also raised suspicions.

"Big money normally comes at the start of the week when we open betting markets or on game day," Richmond said.

"When money comes in the middle of the week it normally suggests an injury cloud over a key player."

Power injured his shoulder in last Saturday night's 46-point victory over the Eagles and was unable to participate last night.

It would be unusual for a midfielder to influence betting so heavily, but with the Tigers appearing to have greater pace than Brisbane the loss of one of their best runners would be a huge blow.

Should Power be ruled out, Jed Adcock would loom as the most likely replacement. Adcock was listed as injured last week and missed the West Coast clash.

But the rising star raised suspicions his absence may have been form-related when he told the chairman's circle function before the Eagles match that he was fit enough to play.

Lions coach Leigh Matthews said the club had taken a cautious approach with Adcock because there was an element of mystery surrounding his injury.

"Jed Adcock's scans seem to show that he had a little bit of damage to his non-kicking quad and if that's the case, you usually miss a few weeks," he said.

Brisbane just talking it up,  throwing things around about injuries to throw us off.
They be bringing a strong team & will come to play tough footy, just hope we have learnt to play football on the dome like its any other ground & the supporters are there in droves as this is going to be our toughest assignment & one we can win to keep confidence up for the upcoming weeks

That's it isn't it, the supporters and the team alike dropping expected wins.

Things are changing though as evidenced by last weeks win over the bumblers, that was a big danger game in my book and was absolutely stoked to get the win.

Times they are a changin  :thumbsup :gotigers

Surprise surprise Buckley has tipped against us again - "The Brisbane Lions will be too strong for the young and skillful Tigers".

Must be 30 years since we've been called skillful lol.

Gerard Daffy from Lasseters betting said on SEN tonight that the query isn't just on Black but also Bradshaw. One didn't train and the other hardly trained. So we're favourites with the punters and bookies.

if we play like we did against the bombers ,the lions will win and easily.
lm really finding it hard to see how we are going to stop brown and bradshaw with skinny backline players.
maybe schulz on brown ,but bradshaw is a very smart player.
we need to win the clearances to have any chance.
lm glad jacko is back in he adds some hardness .

Interesting all the rumours of injury but I would surprized if any come to fruition. regardless I just hope the team is preparing for the best Brissy can give. They appear to be keen to play a stoppage, man on man style where they hope to expose our smaller size with their bigger slower players. We need to match their strength around the packs and tackle hard and then use our superior pace to spread, run and carry.

It is around the packs that the game will be won and lost.

From: Perform or perish, warns Lion Charman
By David Reed
4:30 PM Fri 25 July, 2008

.... Tiger Chris Newman rated Brown and forward-line partner Daniel Bradshaw as key factors in the result.

“They have got the capability of kicking six or seven goals each so you put those two in there and that’s a match-winning score,” Newman said.

“We are looking forward to the challenge; we have got a pretty young backline so I know all the boys are looking forward to learning a lot by playing on those types of players.”

Newman said being in the hunt for a top-eight berth this late in the season had provided a pleasant change.

“It is good to be alive in this time of the year, I personally haven’t had that and a lot of the other boys haven’t either,” Newman said.

“It is really exciting, every game gets harder as the weeks go on and [we are] just really looking forward to the challenge.

“You try not to get ahead of yourselves; we are in no position to get ahead of ourselves.”

But Newman suggested that the surface at Telstra Dome would suit his side.

“Telstra Dome is a fast track and we have got a pretty fast group at the moment, which is something we have developed over the past couple of years. We do look forward to playing here.
