Cousins boosts membership sales

4:46 PM Fri 09 January, 2009

THE BEN Cousins factor is continuing to give Richmond's membership drive an enormous boost.

The club's membership figures have surged since signing the former West Coast skipper in last month's pre-season draft.

"Our membership is at least 4000 up on this time last year and we do attribute quite a lot of this added interest in the club to the signing of Ben Cousins last month," Richmond's commercial operations manager Hamish McKenzie said on Friday.

The Tigers have signed up more than 17,000 matchday members, as well as almost 4000 non-matchday members.

Cousins has won the Tigers plenty of new interest from Western Australia, with Richmond "inundated with messages of support and membership enquiries" from that state.

The 30-year-old, who is attempting to overcome drug addiction, won four best and fairest awards and the 2005 Brownlow Medal with the Eagles, before being sacked by the club at the end of 2007 then suspended by the AFL for the 2008 season.

So just taking a very generalised average of $100 per membership we can already see a tangible benefit of ~$400k to the club.  Wonder how Eddie is viewing his $8m loss now?   :wallywink

LOL smokey. We should send Eddie a letter of thanks  ;D.

Cuz is on what $150k? We've already made $250k profit just by drafting him. Maybe we should stick "Cousins" on the back of our guernsey lol.

We had 14,990 ticketed members on Jan 16 last year so with a week still to go this year 3-4,000 ahead would be about right. Great stuff RFC  :clapping  :thumbsup.

Just pointing out that even without Ben Cousins we would be seeing an improvement on last year anyway. In 2007 we were 16th and sold 39,000 memberships on the back of that. Last year we were 9th and uncovered TC who is the best teen in the game. Even without Ben we would be up and frankly given that improvement and the Cuz bounce we should be able to hit 45,000 ( matchday and unticketed combined). I'll be disappoited if we don't add at least 4,000.

That would sound about right to as most supporter would have noticed that we were making inroads in the ladder position.
So they would of mort than likely joined up but Ben was a bonus.

The Hawk surge is predictable but we have to admit that the Essendon figure is superb. They have had 4 poor seasons and have no real hype yeat are comfortably ahead of both us and the Magpies.

I don't like Essendon. The corporate bland catch all club that they are but that figure is impressive

I think I read somewhere that Essendon have a smart method of renewal like a 'continuous' membership with direct debits every month and the membership is automatically renewed unless you advise the club otherwise.  They would pick up many silent or apathetic members this way by not needing to rely on them getting off their bums and physically renewing each year.  I'm not sure if our 'pay by installments' membership does this now?
