bg25 says the Club is trying to raise funds for two new rookies. Calling it the 'rookie pledge'. $500 a pledge.

Not sure how we can 6 rookies when we have 2 vets outside the senior list unless these rookies are international (Irish I guessing)?

Anyway mhill on BF says it'll cost 100k all up ($50k per rookie) and the club already has 60 of the 200 pledges needed. Glad to see the club being proactive.

Maybe the extra rookie spots we can have due to the Gold Coast coming and taking draft picks starts next year, MT?

GC doesn't enter the National draft until 2010 but they do have access to bottom age draftees next year whereas existing clubs don't. You may be still right though about the extra rookie spots TA. I forgot about that  :thumbsup. From memory it was 3 extra spots IIRC. We'll also be getting an Irish kid according to Ricky Nixon a couple of weeks ago.

Thet got 100 pledges may have been 102 cannot remember  :P

I think the rule for the number of rookies changes next season because of the GC17 thing, clubs can have 2 extra rookies in 2009

Yeah, and 2010.
Compensation for priority access for GC17 to 20 Qld teenagers who would opt to stand out of the draft.

Will probably increase by another rookie in 2011.

Cheers WP and FF  :cheers.

Presumably one of the rookies will be an Irish kid.

New rookie rule
« Reply #10 on: October 15, 2008, 04:57:55 PM »
Interesting that Balmey this morning mentions there is a new rookie rule.....

"There's a new rule next year where after round 11 one rookie will be able to play senior footy, without having to put a player on the long-term injury list," Balme said.

Agree WP. A very good idea. It would also help someone who may be a chance to get a mature rookie position as they would be ready-made or an international rookie.

Collard would be our obvious candidate at this stage you would think if he's not promoted. If we keep Polak on the senior list and then put him on the long-term injury list then that would free up two rookies to eventually play on the senior list next year.

I'm guessing Cartledge will be promoted due to our depleated Ruckstocks, leaving Collard on the rookie list and Howart and Silvester delisted. We will gain an Irish rookie and four others. Of those four I would once more guess that the first two will be the best project players/talent overlooked in the draft while the final two will be insurance players much like Howart and Silvestor were for us this year.

Polak will be placed on the Long-Term injury list immediately and Collard will be elevated.

I think the new rule is an excellent one. It's always good to see a Rookie play and succeed.

We would have to delist or drop someone back to the rookie list for us to promote Cartledge. We are currently at the maximum 35 senior listed players that are allowed by Oct 31.

Interesting that the rookie delistings haven't been mentioned yet. Perhaps we are waiting to see what shape they return back in for the start of preseason training before making a final decision or perhaps we are waiting until we raise the money for the 2 extra rookies.
