2008 Draft Camp
« on: September 18, 2008, 10:05:14 PM »
Players attending the 2008 NAB AFL Draft Camp

THE AFL has released the names of the 75 young hopefuls who will attend this year's NAB AFL Draft Camp, which gets under way at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra next week.

The camp is a key event in the lead-up to November's NAB AFL Draft, with the attendees given the opportunity to impress recruiters from the 16 AFL clubs as they are put through a series of interviews and tests.

Prospective top-three choices Nicholas Naitanui, Jack Watts and Daniel Rich will take part, as will tall forward Ayce Cordy who is likely to go to the Western Bulldogs as a father-son pick.

Victoria leads the state by state breakdown with 37 players invited followed by South Australia with 14, Western Australia with 13, Tasmania with five, the Northern Territory with three, New South Wales with two and one from Queensland.

The three-day camp kicks off on next Wednesday with fitness assessments and psychomotor tests which measure reaction time, decision-making and peripheral awareness.

Sprints, vertical leap and agility are tested on Thursday, with the dreaded beep test to be held at 5pm. The three-km time trial awaits on Friday morning, with a skills session to finish the camp later that afternoon.

The draft meeting will be held on Saturday November 29, and the camp is a pivotal part of the assessment process along with the NAB AFL U18 Championships and the TAC Cup.

These should be the 3 groups we should interested in the most.

Interesting to see if Trengove makes the camp. McKernan should be classed as a tall forward. Too short for an AFL ruckman even though he rucks a bit in the U18s.

Kevin Sheahan on SEN about the draft camp....

Nat should break Croad's vertical jump record
2.90 in 20m sprint.

Sidebottom - 15 beep. Top 10er

Vickery - Top 5. Key forward/ruck 6' 7". Overcome ACL last year to show he can stand up under pressure in the Vic Metro vs WA U18 final.

Lynch - 190cm. Play anywhere. Top 20 or even inside first round.

Wed: Repeat sprints. 6 x 30m with 20 sec breaks. Last year Rioli killed it.

Thurs: 5m, 10m, 20m sprints and Beep test.

Friday: 3k time trial. Tests competitiveness. Palmer stood out in this last year.

Clubs put in 20 requests for interviews.

Some brief Draft Camp results:

Shoenmakers dominated the repeated sprints.

Watts ran 20m in 0.50 seconds and in the vertical jump Naitanui jumped 6.59m

Naitanui was 4th and Watts was 7th in the sprint test.

Kevin Sheahan was saying that it is amazing such tall blokes could do such good times.

Interviews: (I'll post these on the Richmond Rant board as well)

Naitanui's vertical leap - 78cm unconfirmed - which is just behind Croad's record. May have equalled the running jump.

20m sprint and agility records have gone.

20m results by a Pies fan who was at DC in the morning:

1. #39 Ashley Smith, Dandenong, Defender - 2.80 secs
2. #65 Jack Watts, Sandringham, Tall Forward - 2.82 secs
3. #12 Stephen Hill, West perth, Midfielder - 2.83 secs
4. #75 Nic Naitanui, Swan Districts, Ruck - 2.86 secs
5. #34 Tom Swift, Claremont, Midfielder - 2.89 secs
6. #15 Ryan Schoenmakers, Norwood, Forward - 2.90 secs
7. #3 Sam Blease, Eastern, Midfielder - 2.91 secs
7. #17 Nick Heyne, Gippsland, Forward - 2.91 secs
9. #43 Taylor Hunt, Sandringham, Defender - 2.92 secs
9. #30 Luke Shuey, Oakleigh, Midfielder - 2.92 secs
9. #33 Matthew DeBoer, Claremont, Midfielder - 2.92 secs
12.#74 Tyrone Vickery, Sandringham, Ruck - 2.94 secs
12.#21 Bryce Carroll, Western Jets, Forward - 2.94 secs

Watched Ziebell - from memory his times were above 3.00 secs - a bit slow but Sidebottom's were very slow. Hurley was a bit below 3.00, I think, and I was very impressed by him. Strauss was in the same group as Shuey, Swift and DeBoer but can't remember his times - sorry. Hartlett, Rich and Beams from that group didn't run. There were a lot of players around the 3.00 - 3.10 secs.

I'm sure results will be on the AFL website tonight.

Reading that, the times should be roughly
Ziebell was 3.00 - 3.10
Sidebottom was 3.05+
Hurley 2.95 - 3.00

Geez Watts is quick off the mark  :o. Only further confirms he'll go No.1. Vickery did very well too.

Gourdis got 2.83 secs last year so he is on par with Watts (minus the natural footy ability  :-\ ). If that Nat vertical jump figure is right though Dave can jump higher at 81cm  ;D.

Watts ran the 20 metre sprint in 2.82 seconds, while Naitanui was just behind him in 2.86 seconds.

The other stand out performance came from West Australian Stephen Hill who broke Danyle Pearce's four-year-old record in the agility run, sprinting through in 7.7 seconds.

SEN didn't give any times but they said Jack Watts blew everyone away to show he has speed and endurance. Certain No.1 pick now.

Courtesy of K24 on Voy

The 3km trial was run in 3 groups.

Group 1 was the small/medium midfielders and the medium forwards - basically players numbered 1-24 in the list. Only 13 of 24 ran. Trial was won comfortably by Dan Hannebery (Oakleigh) with a good time of about 10 minutes 16 seconds (plus or minus a couple of seconds) - then followed Chris Hall (SA Eagles), Stephen Hill (West Perth), Ian Richardson (Claremont) & Sam Wright (Murray). Tom Rockliff (Murray) was a distant last.

Group 2 was the medium midfielders and medium defenders - basically players numbered 25-46. Only 12 of 22 ran. Trial was won very comfortably by Steele Sidebottom (Murray) in a time of about 10:31 (plus or minus a few seconds). He streeted them. Second was Sam McGarry (Sandringham) and then a group cam in pretty much together. Ashley Smith who won yesterday's 20m sprint was in the last couple.

Group 3 was the tall defenders, tall forwards & ruckmen - players numbered 47-75 on the list. Only 15 of 29 ran. Naitanui was a no-show - only 3 rucks ran. Trial was won by Tom Lynch (Sandringham) in a time of about 11:10 (plus or minus a few seconds) from Lewis Johnston (North Adelaide), Jordan Jones (Geelong) & Michael Hurley (Northern). Zach Sengstock probably set a record for the slowest 3km run.

Skills session consisted of 2 groups of about 20 players doing various drills - probably half the players there didn 't participate. Made a few notes but probably nothing that hasn't been said before.

My two observations about this draft is that the consensus seems to be that it's a good draft - the first 25 will be good players and there will still be good players available in the third round. I don't think it's as cut and dried as a lot of mock drafts would have you believe either. There will be some surprises, some sliders (either way) and if one of them is near the top it will throw everybody out that follows.

Sidebottom seems to have high endurance but not necessarily speed in spurts. Tom Lynch fans on here will be happy.

More the reason to keep our second round pick instead of trading it away for dud lugs just because they can 2nd ruck. Also we need to try to trade for another top 30 pick.

SHUTTLE RUN (AKA BEEP TEST)
The shuttle run is held on the basketball courts. Players must run 20 metres before hearing a beep. It starts off slowly and builds up rapidly, with players increasing their pace significantly. The beeps get quicker each time the players progress. It is a last man standing test. Each player gets one warning – if they miss one beep – they cannot afford to miss another one, as they will be disqualified from the shuttle run. An average draft camp run is level 13.3. A very good level is 14-plus and 15-plus is rare.
