Ian Stewart's view on the Brownlow in today's Herald-Sun..."Blinding skill, and don't get me wrong because Bartel has plenty of it, isn't enough in itself to win most Brownlows.
"A lot of Brownlow votes are given through respect and admiration for the way a player goes about his work. In Bartel's case it is persistence and, from an umpire's perspective, his style would be very pleasing to watch.
"Kevin Bartlett had the blinding skill, but didn't poll well because umpires didn't respect his selfishness. ...........
Stewart played 127 games as a centreman with St Kilda between 1963-70 winning Brownlows in 1965-66 and playing in the club's 1966 premiership.
He then joined Richmond, where he played 78 matches from 1971-75, winning the 1971 Brownlow and playing in the Tigers' 1973 premiership. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24381326-19742,00.html
