Richmond at the Draft Camp (video and summary)
« on: October 02, 2008, 04:09:54 AM »
There's video of Foley and Francis Jackson on the AFL site and copies of it on youtube. Shows us talking with some of the draftees.

http://bigpondvideo.com/AFLTV/80446 or http://www.youtube.com/v/kNT_QGfpC78

http://bigpondvideo.com/AFLTV/80442 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUH-ApQEIsg

RFC Officials at the Draft Camp...
* Francis Jackson - chief recruiter
* Craig Cameron - football manager and list manager
* Jeff Bond - our club psychologist and from the AIS (22 years there)
* Craig McRae - development coach
* Paul Armstrong - football operations manager and helping with recruiting
* Peter Sessel (sp?) - helping with recruiting
* Nathan Foley - interviewer for afl.com.au and sat in on some of our interviews with the draftees

Foley interviewed Francis Jackson..

* What we are looking for in the draftees (in order)
1. Footy ability - without it they're not going to make it anyway.
2. movement skills and athleticism
3. personal attributes and what they personally can bring to our club.

* Francis Jackson said last week he travelled 4000km to watch one game then 4000km back.

* We're waiting to confirm if a kid is playing in the NT (this weekend?).

* Interviewed around 25 kids. Already interviewed some in WA and SA. Follow up on those we have queries on and go into their home environment. See how they deal with the pressure and demands of AFL footy. He thinks we are pretty thorough in what we do.

The clip shows us talking to Luke Shuey and Hamish Hartlett...

Luke Shuey    Hamish Hartlett

Foley was interviewing Sam Blease (who did his AIS apprenticeship with Richmond last summer) and Daniel Rich.

Gotta love Francis Jackson talking about his 4000K trip to watch a footy match. Starts off by looking around a bit sus and saying "Nobodies listening are they?" and then once satisfied no ones around proceeds with his story. Ummm. Francis, hate to tell you this but you are being filmed and the films going on the internet on BigPond Video and YouTube. Yep, people are listening mate. lol.

Shows the club is recruiting for the future, to improve the list and has confidence with its recruiting department. Has TW been there is previous years? I would imagine that these fellows with return to give their reports together to TW regardless.

Agree. These blokes are recruiting for the future of the Club.

So all the coaches that ARE there are wasting their time, you're saying?   :whistle

The NT kid must be one of these four. Our 4th round pick perhaps.

Medium Forwards
13 Steven Motlop NT Wanderers
16 Charlie Sharples NT Darwin FC

Tall Defenders
47 Michael Gugliotta NT Nightcliff
56 Casey Sibosado NT Northern Territory Thunder

Plough never goes IIRC and leaves it all to the recruiters. He's a phone call away. Not something I would do. Sure you've got to let the recruiters do their job but as senior coach I would want some first hand knowledge of those who I may end up coaching.

Hartlett looks a good midfielder - good balance, skills and decision making. The only negative is he is probably a type we aren't desperately lacking (although a much better version of what we have). Not necessarily the hard ballwinner that a Rich or Ziebell would be.

Speaking of Rich - he makes you wish we tanked. Ready-made midfielder and ballwinner who'll probably win the rising star next year if he gets through injury free. Rich didn't look like the usual skinny draftee standing next to Foley.

I like Hartlett as a player but I am unsure whether he has a 2nd gear when it comes to pace.

Funny listening to Malthouse at the Draft Camp tonight on the news. He's only up there to meet the draftees personally one-on-one and reckons all the testing they do is a waste of time.
