Hypothetical - trading Richo for Judd?
« on: October 22, 2008, 04:11:47 AM »
from Sheeds' autobiography...

Sheedy suggested Essendon could have offered captain Matthew Lloyd to West Coast as part of a deal to make Judd a Bomber.

Ok I'm going to put my gonads on the table here and say that if the deal had come up this year I would been all for it.

Richo played out of the box this year and almost claimed the Brownlow but I feel his best is behind him and time is running out on his career. Judd on the other hand is barely half-way into his career and still has plenty to offer. He has won a Brownlow, is recognised as the best consistent performing in the midfield and could give us the edge to push for a flag in 3+ years.

Hawthorn is now the new benchmark in terms of recruiting and they made some difficult decisions on much loved players who they knew were not going to assist them in obtaining a flag but would give them draft picks or young players than may. Trading Richo would be an incredibly difficult and highly emotional challenge, similiar to Essendon trading Hird in the past, but it if you were to get someone who could get you to a flag then that may ease the pain.

It is never going to happen and Richo remains one of my, the clubs and now competitions most loved players but it is interesting to speculate none-the-less.

Stripes that is BLASPHEMY where is that thunderbolt.

Only joking know where you are coming from, as a list manager you would probably jump at the opportunity.

Luckily as a supporter I dont have to be rational and can say no way.

I find it weird when people use Hawthorn as an example when mentioning the possibility of trading Richo. They never traded Shane Crawford who is the best comparison to Richo as a heart and soul of the club type player. Hay & Thompson both wanted out and found a gullible club in North to give up picks which would never happen again. Everitt also wanted out, the only trade which was Hawthorn's choice was Croad and again that was the stupidity of Fremantle, such a trade will never happen again.

I can't see Judd playing much past 30 years old either, so I wouldnt say he's barely half way into his career

I knew I would upset people even entertaining the idea but if you remove the emotion and look at it from an outsiders perspective the trade would be benefical to the clubs future success. Realistically Richo will retire in a year or two regardless of whether he is in our side or another so if we were to get a star player who gave us an additional 4+ years on top of that then we are ahead.

I understand that he is the heart and soul of the club, he bleeds yellow and black etc etc but I'm looking at this as an imaginative, philosophical perspective.

In terms of on field success - the deal would worth persuing.

As much as I hate writing this and many of you will hate reading this especially from me who loves the big fella playing for us: no individual is bigger than the club and if the right deal came along we would be stupid not to consider it. Sure there are other emotional factors involved but that alone does not wholly get the job done.

Hawthorns circumstances were unique

Judd has shown that his groins are fragile. All it will take is another slight injury like last year and he may be a shadow of what we saw when he was flying at the Eagles so I would say no there as a straight swap.

Throw in Kerr and you'd be stupid to say no.

On the other hand Richo is the heart and soul of the club and has been in our most loyal servant in this most trying and lean spell in our long history. Richo equates to marketing memberships dollars for the club but I guess so does Judd and Cox and these blokes are significantly younger and possibly would play for another 5-8 years barring injury.

It is difficult to answer with such an undercurrent of emotion: I say hopefully we draft well and the cubs keep developing and they give Richo the chance to celebrate victory on the last Saturday in September and Judd and Cox can look on with jealousy.

OK we are upping the ante are we, chuck in Jen Hawkins and we have a deal.

Seroiusly I wouldn't to a trade for any 1 player, go to 2 of that quality and something we need and you would be crazy not to take it.

The thing is it is not entirely about the players worth in monetary terms or footballing ability but the soul of the club that comes into the equation when you talk about Richo.

Something that couldn't be bought back in a 100 years if we were to do it.
