Rate a Tiger's year: Richie Tambling
« on: October 23, 2008, 04:03:43 AM »
Tambo played every game in 2008 averaging 17 possies and 5 marks. He also had 72 tackles for the year which was 3rd best at Richmond and 70 inside 50s which ranked him 2nd behind Lids. Blingers had a career high of 27 possies against Brisbane, 24 versus the Cats at the Dome, and 23 in the draw with the Bulldogs.

Whilst not setting the world on fire Richie continues to improve year after year. His stats do not go backwards. Would like to see his disposals in the low to mid 20s but I think he will get there. Tackling is a highlight, something we are crying out for at Richmond. Rating Tambo is sure to attract some mixed opinions but I feel he is developing slowly and will make it. He lives his footballing life under some pretty high, some might say unrealistic and unfair, expectations.

7/10 reflecting his slow improvement. A comfortable pass mark.

What he said.  Maybe 7.5/10.

Good post RROFO and agree with it all.  I rated him 7 as well, when I seen the topic 7 came straight into my head.

I am enthusiastic as with the young talent being developed at Tigerland and I reckon Tambo is going to be extremely good value in our side.

And as RROFO said I firmly believe he has had (and unfortunately still will have) unfair comparisons drawn to him because of the 2004 draft.

I agree with the 7 or if possible 7.5 out of 10.

In some games when the team wasnt going or was slowing down...Richie kept at it.  2 reasons why not an 8 for me:
a) needs to get his possession count into the low 20s (though this year was a quantum leap for him)
b) did not kick enough goals and really hurt opposition teams.

Otherwise the rest of his game is sound.  Steady improvement.  Stats are up.  Tackle count is great and he puts enourmous pressure with his pace and harrassment causing opposition teams to turnover the ball.

Keep it up Blingersssssssss

I went for 8 purely based on his continuing to improve. I guess the 8 is based more on his value to the club next season rather than his actual form this year but I believe we will see big things from blingers next season.  :thumbsup

I only rated him a 5 due to the fact that he was a top pick up but has only now just started to show what he is capable of.
I thought he should be further down the track than he is. But I'm only an armchair expert though.
And this is what this is about giving your opnion on it.
So I think if he shows more next year I will bumb up my rating of him then so now it will stay on 5.

I gave him a 6.  I think that is partly because of the high expectations I have of him, but he is getting there.  I'd just like to see him become a little more consistent, i.e. he is still prone to 'go missing' and then have a red hot 5 or 10 minutes.  I also believe he does a lot of good things that tend to go unnoticed, like the tackling and pressure around contests and that his ability in close in underrated.  He just needs to know when to get rid of the ball sometimes and his handball options can let him down.  All in all doing well and no doubt will build upon it next year

6.5-7/10.

Moved up to a 7/10 in the final 7 rounds or so of the season when Tambo was allowed to settle in a small defender (hence the fewer goals from him this year) where he could play a springboard role with spurts in the midfield. His confidence rose as he found more of the footy and he started to have more impact for the side.

Where do you play him? HBF but we have a million options.  Can he play HFF, kick 40 goals and use his pace to put some decent pressure on the opps defence?  Or can he develop as a mid? I'm unsure of the option playing him as a mid but if he can make it as a genuine goal kicking, hard tackling HFF, he will improve our side on this year.

I guess the answer could be all of the above but I think Blingers was more versatile and more than just another loose HBFer. He also replaced Jakey as our small defender who matched up on the oppositon's little pric... I mean small forwards and Tambo is a much better kick than Kingy.

Will be a wingman/rover in time
Played an inside role for much of the year in 2008 but didn't have the body strength for it, was at the bottom of plenty of packs
With more extracters in the side in 2009 in Coughlan & Thomson, they will be there to dish off to a fast moving Tambling who will then be a good link man into the forward line
