High chance Rance better for wait

WHEN YOU were a kid, it was the night before Christmas that took forever.

But at least you got to unwrap the presents at 6am or 7am, or whenever your mum and dad let you.

Draft day is far worse – you don't start until 10, and then you have to wait until someone surprises you with your present.

If they do.

Defender Alex Rance went into draft day last year with people saying he was a good chance to be selected in the top 10, but it didn't work out that way.

"It was pretty nerve-wracking, especially the night before – it seemed to be the longest night of my life, I woke up every couple of hours," he told richmondfc.com.au.

"I had a few family and friends over on the Saturday morning, and it was a very nervous countdown as we watched it live on the laptop.

"It's a bit hard to take something like being talked about as top 10 – you try to keep your composure and not let it affect you, and say you're happy to go at any number, but secretly you want to go top 10.

"But in the end, you're just happy to go anywhere.

"The media can build you up a little bit to think you're potentially something you're not, and that was the case with me. I heard a few rumours about how I may be top 10, and when I got picked up at number 18, I was a little bit disappointed.

"When thinking about it, I should have been ecstatic with that."

Rance admitted his thoughts started to wander a bit once the selections reached double figures.

"It was really difficult, because once you're out of the top-10 zone, you start to think about whether you'd like to stay home in Perth, or where your next preference was," he said.

"But it was almost a bit of a relief – because I knew that I would go somewhere – knowing you don't have that 'top 10' over your head anymore.

"So by then, I was just happy to go wherever and just enjoy the rest of the day."

At that stage, Rance knew he wanted to go to a club that he could grow with – so lasting until the second round wasn't that bad.

"To be honest, I was just relieved to get past Geelong – I'd struggle to get into their VFL team," he said with a laugh.

"When Richmond selected me, I was extremely happy. [It's] a club that's really going places and, with the potential they had already picked up in the draft, I could really see myself playing a role, and that I was needed at the club.

"So I'm really looking forward to starting to show my worth over the next couple of years."

Named as an emergency for a handful of Tigers games in the final weeks of the season, Rance will hope to end that wait in the opening weeks of 2009.

It's going to be interesting to see how we fit Rance eventually into the side. It's going to be hot to cement a KP in our defence with Moore, Thursty, McGuane and Rance. Plus we've kept Silvester on the rookie list for some reason as another tall backman.

Rance - Being drafted just the beginning (RFC)

Being drafted just the beginning
By Mic Cullen
Wed 03 December, 2008

GETTING drafted is the prize that most young footy players strive for.

The fame, the glory, the money – it’s all apparently there if only you can get onto an AFL club list.

Plenty of blood, sweat and tears go into making it to the finish line and being one of the first 60 or so to cross it.

However, it’s soon after that the realisation can set in about the real situation.

It’s only the beginning.

That was the story for Alex Rance this year – touted as a top-10 pick in the 2007 draft, the Tigers were rapt to snare him at No.18, and he was thrilled to be going to an up-and-coming team that was marching up the ladder.

But then reality intruded, and Rance didn’t play an AFL game all year, despite being named as an emergency several times, although coach Terry Wallace admitted that if Rance had come to the club a couple of years earlier, he’d have played most of the season.

“It was a tough one, a few times it was really hard throughout the year,” he told richmondfc.com.au.

“It was really hard to place myself in the side.

“A few times I was an emergency, and got my hopes up, and backed up a few good games, but it was difficult, especially as our backline was so solid over the year.

“But I have learned a lot this year – the VFL is a much stronger competition than the WAFL – especially playing the finals game for Coburg, that was another step up in intensity, and that brings me one step closer to the AFL.”

One thing Rance discovered was that being an elite player wasn’t enough.

“Giving them what they want is part of the learning experience – especially at the start of the year when I had one idea of how they wanted me to play, and they had a completely opposite idea of how I should play.

“But I learned quickly – the first five or so games I was struggling a little bit, and then five to 10 I started to grab a hold of it, and from then on I really started to consolidate and become a bit more consistent throughout the season.”

And he admitted that, at times, he was getting somewhat impatient during the year.

“Yeah, I was banging on Terry’s door a few times,” he said with a laugh. “I thought that if I put my hand up and said ‘look, I’m ready, and I really want my opportunity’ that might persuade him a little bit more, along with the performances I’d put on over the weekend.

“But it was more that I needed to let my actions do the talking a little bit more, but yeah, I was definitely knocking on his door a bit.”

And although the club sees the 192cm, 88kg 19-year-old as a key defender, Rance has designs on playing further up the field.

“I’d prefer to play a more running role, but centre half-back would be nice … maybe further down the line, maybe a midfielder, or something like that.”

Don't worry MT he will get in, this kid is busting a gut to play AFL, if Thursty isn't right come round one he will get a gig and of Schulz doesn't lift another 10% this year give Rance a go.
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

"Rucks:
Shaun Hampson is the No.1 man"

True WAT. That's another good thing about us picking up some quality young talls in the past two drafts. Those 20-something talls already on our list won't be able to survive just on the fact they were our only talls on our list as happened in the past. Now it'll be perform or be replaced by someone younger.

In your opinion- could he play up forward?

We need someone to stand up and take there opportunity up forward.

Having said that we dont want to wreck the kid, and he should play where he is most competent and comfortable.

Not permanently Ramps but maybe as a pinchhitter like Adam Hunter has done many times successfully for the Eagles. I still see Rance developing into mainly a key defender (CHB) for us who can also hurt the opposition on the rebound.
