Tigers call on Klemke
Border Mail
Brett Kohlhagen

MURRAY Bushrangers captain Kade Klemke’s disappointment at being overlooked in Saturday’s AFL draft has been eased by Richmond inviting him to train with the club.

Klemke and two other unknown players will spend a fortnight under coach Terry Wallace at Punt Road vying for one position in the pre-season draft on December 16.

The talented midfielder said yesterday the setback had made him even more determined to crack a spot in the big-time.

“It was a bit disappointing, but not the end of the world,” Klemke said.

“There are never any guarantees with the draft and it was just good to hear from Richmond straight away.

“Three players will train for one spot and I’ll just give it everything and see how it goes.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

If Klemke fails to make it onto Richmond’s list, the TAC Cup premiership player would most likely be snapped up by Sydney and put on its rookie list.

Murray Bushrangers regional manager Andrew Carson said Saturday’s draft was a day of mixed emotions with four players — Jack Ziebell, Steele Sidebottom, Sam Wright and Caleb Tiller — being picked up.

“Obviously it’s fantastic for Jack, Steele, Sam and Caleb and really exciting that they have found clubs,” Carson said.

“They have all worked hard and we are thrilled for them.

“But then we had a couple who were disappointed and we will be working to find them clubs to train with over the next few days.

“You can’t never predict what will happen on draft day, so we just want to do everything we can to support our players and hopefully find them spots.”

The Bushrangers best result in the draft was in 2000 when nine players — Justin Koschitzke, Kayne Pettifer, Blake Campbell, Allan Murray, Chris Hyde, Sean O’Keefe, Daniel Cross, Marc Bullen and Luke Hammond — found clubs.

It had seven players picked up in 1995, 1999 and 2001.

Klemke and Benalla’s Tom Rockliff were regarded the most unlucky to be overlooked, while Riley Milne, Andrew Browne and Jamie Sheahan also had claims.

Interesting to see who the other two are vying for that PSD spot and if they are all kids.

KADE KLEMKE - medium defender, Murray Bushrangers, Vic.
DOB: 15/7/90 Ht: 180cm Wt: 78kg
"Kade was our captain and is a really strong, hard working, reliable half-back flanker who does most things pretty well. Kicks the ball really well, takes a good overhead mark, has a strong body, is hard at it, sweeps across halfback and reads the play. Once again he can get ahead of himself at times as a sweeper in terms of attacking before he defend, but is just a really, good solid player who I think should be able to play at AFL level:" - Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn.

Jury still out on this guy for mine, did not like his kicking much in those video's, I know he is hard at it but he would really need to lift his kicking level of skill.

Just had a look at sheehan and Rockliff, I like the look of Sheehan, actually I recon he could play early next year if not from the start of the season.

Klemke may earn Tiger stripes
By Steve Lavell
Wed 03 December, 2008

THE DISAPPOINTMENT of being overlooked in last Saturday's NAB AFL Draft will be short-lived if Kade Klemke's training stint with Richmond ends with a place on its senior list.

The Swans have until 10.15am on December 16 to nominate Klemke to the list, while the Brisbane Lions have the same arrangement with Queensland talent.

"Whether Kade is in their thinking for that sort of role, we don't know," Bunn said. "The opportunity has been given to him by Richmond with a spot on their primary list up for grabs. He's obviously pretty keen to do that.

"I think if Sydney were even to pre-select him as one of their New South Wales kids, being drafted by Richmond would overrule that position."

Punt Road not the only road for Kade Klemke
By Ben Broad
Fri 12 December, 2008

DESPITE spending almost two weeks training at Richmond, hopeful Kade Klemke isn’t putting all his eggs in a yellow and black basket ahead of Tuesday's NAB AFL Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts.

Klemke, who in 2008 captained the Murray Bushrangers to the TAC Cup premiership, acknowledges that Punt Road is his best chance of earning a permanent spot on an AFL list next year.

But the heartache of draft day – or at least that suffered by those closest to him – has taught him not to go counting any chickens.

Klemke was one of those borderline prospects heading into last month's national draft.

Fancied by a few clubs, he was rated a 50-50 chance to be selected – if he was to go, it was going to be late.

When his name wasn't called in the dying stages, some took it harder than the youngster himself.

"I was with the family … they were probably a bit more disappointed than I was," Klemke said.

"They were pretty upset, and I tried to put a smile on their face.

"I felt good still, I felt confident. If you're not playing AFL footy it's not meant to be, but it doesn’t mean you stop trying."

Immediately following the draft, the Tigers were on the phone, inviting him down to training.

Within a couple of days he had packed his bags, and has since been staying with defender Will Thursfield and living the life of every other professional footballer at this time of year.

The only difference is he's not getting paid – he's still an aspirant – and yet to reach the status that fellow Bushrangers such as Jack Ziebell and Steele Sidebottom now enjoy.

He has nevertheless relished the chance to train alongside some of the Tigers' big guns over the past two weeks.

"I'm loving it, it's been great fun," Klemke said of his time at Punt Road.

"You're doing what you love … it's a great experience, I'll take a lot out of it."

The Tigers are also applying for an extra pre-season selection should the AFL give the club clearance to place Graham Polak on the rookie list.

Klemke said he didn't believe the prospect of former Eagle Ben Cousins joining the Tigers – should that speculation be fulfilled – would make a difference to his chances.

"I'd be happy to get picked up any way," Klemke said.

"I hope there are other clubs that want me [too]. There are more rookie picks this year, so who knows what might happen."

For now he must keep up his work on the track, although he admits to feeling the pressure more than in the lead-up to the last intake.

"[I'm] pretty nervous, probably more nervous than the actual [national] draft," Klemke said.

"You know, this is it. There's nothing else after this."

AFL hopeful Kade Klemke keeps feet on the ground
Sam Edmund | December 15, 2008

IT'S the advice rarely heeded by the AFL's next batch of wannabe stars: not being drafted is not the end of the world.

But it's hard to accept when you've spent most of your young life committed to reaching the big league.

That's what makes Kade Klemke different.

The Murray Bushrangers defender had as much right as any to think his name would be called out at Telstra Dome on national draft day.

He had a solid year in the TAC Cup, strong national under-18 championships for NSW-ACT and an invitation to the AIS draft camp.

Seventy-nine names were announced, but Kade Klemke wasn't one of them.

Make no mistake, the 18-year-old would like nothing more than being offered a lifeline in tomorrow's pre-season or rookie draft, but he's maintaining a level head as it approaches.

"Put it this way, the family was probably more down than I was," Klemke said of draft day.

"If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.

"It's not like it's the end of the world. What can you do? I've still got an opportunity."

That opportunity was kept alive by Richmond, which contacted Klemke at home in Henty, in rural New South Wales, within 30 minutes of the national draft finishing.

"I got the call straight after the draft and Richmond told me to come in Monday and said they were thinking about picking me up," he said.

"It probably makes you more determined I guess. You realise the areas you've got to work on and you keep going."

Klemke has been living with promising Tiger stuff Will Thursfield since moving to Melbourne and is relishing the experience.

"I'm loving it, put it that way," he said.

"You're doing what you love so if the opportunity came to get a spot on a list I would be very happy. With the experience you get you can improve your footy so much."

If worse comes to worse and Klemke's dream is denied tomorrow, he's on to Plan B.

"I'll probably move permanently down to Melbourne and I'm thinking about doing a personal training course," he said.

Would make sense as Sydney can nominate him as a rookie prior to the rookie draft given the region he is from
If that's the case then I hope so and I hope we take Cousins and still get Gourdis at 8

i dun really see why we would take klemke over cousins.  he's not one of those who has a real high ceiling in development, i dun really see the potential there.  it doesn't really scream "potential star"...if it was someone like sibosado, then fair enough, there's some magic there, but klemke is just a hard working HBF...to take him over cousins would be stupid
