I didn't think the media circus could get any bigger than yesterday
And then came today.
After seeing the reception Ben got at Melbourne Airport tonight, I wonder how he copes with all this pressure.
He has my admiration for the restraint he shows.
It's a joke :banghead

Wait until training tomorrow, how many thousand do you think will be there to watch?

I am tipping 3-4,000

Mayhem, Bedlam.  :lol

Geez we've been success starved for so long the fans are going bezerk and the hype is absolutely humongous. The Cousins selection has instilled hope and given us all a belief that indeed there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is closer than we might think. The passion and appetite for success in our fans is there all we need is Cuz to supplement what we saw in the second half of the season and it could be the start of a new more positive era in our history. The good old Tiger Arrogance is back for the pre season at least. :thumbsup

Tigers fans welcome Cousins at airport
December 16, 2008 - 10:28PM

It was hard to know who got the greatest prize in troubled AFL star Ben Cousins' move to the Richmond Tigers after 12 months out of the game.

Was it Cousins himself, returning from football exile following self-confessed illicit drug use with a lifeline thrown to him by the Tigers in the AFL pre-season draft on Tuesday?

Or was it young Tigers fan Josh Zuehlke?

Josh scored Cousins' first autograph as a Tiger on the front of his Richmond guernsey moments after the former West Coast Eagles captain and Brownlow medallist touched down in Melbourne ahead of his first training session at Richmond's Punt Road headquarters on Wednesday.

The mop-haired 12-year-old had a grin a mile wide as Cousins stopped to sign the jumper, surrounded by federal police, airport security staff and a crowd of fans eager to catch a glimpse of the newest Tiger.

Cousins, wearing a grey pinstripe suit and a white open-necked shirt, said little to journalists but smiled and signed several autographs as he left the Qantas terminal at Melbourne Airport.

At least 50 Richmond supporters, many dressed in the club's famous yellow and black colours, waited at the arrival gate for the star.

Josh was there with his father, Tim, and siblings Zack and Emily.

"He'll be a gun player for the club," Mr Zuehlke told AAP.

"It will be good to see him come out for Richmond and Carlton (who clash in round one of the 2009 season) to show all the people that are judging him."

Cousins seemed pleased with the response from Tigers fans.

"Absolutely fantastic," he told AAP.

Another large group of supporters jostled for space with reporters, photographers and TV camera operators in the baggage hall.

Applause and cries of "You're a Tiger, mate!", "Go Tigers!" and "Welcome to Punt Road!" filled the hall.

But he didn't linger, slipping quickly into a waiting black VW Golf that sped away moments later.

Vince Farrugia, with sons Dylan, 12, Charlie, 10, and Jayden, 11 - all dressed in Richmond guernseys - said he was thrilled Cousins was coming to Tigerland.

"He's a champion player and we gave him a second chance," he told AAP.

"It doesn't matter what he can do on the field, as long as he lays off the drugs."

The hoopla of the Cousins circus
Guy Hands | December 17, 2008 - 4:16PM

Roll up, roll up. Come to Punt Road Oval.

The Ben Cousins travelling circus has arrived in town.

See Ben, surrounded by 37 Tigers, kick the ball.

See 2,000 happy Richmond fans - some who haven't smiled in nearly 30 years.

See them cheer. See Ben hit Richo on the chest. See Richo nearly faint with surprise.

See Ben run for 45 minutes, then exit stage left. See the fans go wild.

Then see Ben walk the high wire, prodded by 100 media with blinding flashes and pointed questions. See Ben juggle.

See Ben talk about personal demons, gangland figures, rehab, onerous testing procedures, dodgy hamstrings, and how grateful he is for your support.

All while completely drug-free.

"I can't speak highly enough of the reception I have been given and the response from the Richmond fans and the public in the last 48 hours has been quite humbling," he said.

"The average person on the street has been sensational."

That's because nothing draws a crowd like a flawed Australian sportsman. Like Warney. Like Carey. Like Cuzzy.

It's the greatest show on earth.

This one even comes with a sideshow, as Ben's manager wields a whip and chair on a television journalist who wants to change the channel to Underbelly.

Enough cop shows. Back to the footy.

And now for the grand finale, see Ben fired out of a cannon to relaunch his AFL career.

See him fly. Or see him fall. Either way, you won't be able to help watching.

The Ben Cousins travelling circus. Coming to an AFL ground near you in 2009.

Tigers will stay focused: Newman

Newy believes the side can stay focused amongst the circus...

------------------------------------
Tigers will stay focused: Newman
BY Adam Cooper | Canberra Times | 18/12/2008

Richmond captain Chris Newman is confident the Tigers won't be distracted by any sideshow the Ben Cousins recruitment could become next AFL season.

Richmond's training session yesterday looked more like grand final week than pre-season training as about 2000 fans crammed Punt Road oval to watch Cousins in the yellow and black for the first time.

The circus scenes then went indoors when about 100 media representatives attended Cousins' press conference.

But Newman insisted the Tigers had the mettle not to let the signing and the associated scrutiny distract the players from their 2009 aim of playing finals.

''I don't think we can be distracted by all this hype,'' he said.

''By the way we trained today we proved that we can move on and get on with football.

''If we want to play finals football in the future then we'll have to get used [to] that sort of thing.''

Despite the risks that come with getting Cousins, 30, and his battle against drug addiction, Newman and vice-captain Nathan Foley agreed the former West Coast star had plenty to offer a young playing group.

''It's a great experience to add Ben into the midfield, with his team success and the individual success he's had over the years,'' Foley said.

''Our young midfield group will learn so much from him.''

Having endured 12 months of intense scrutiny, Cousins appeared comfortable with yesterday's attention.

But he said that had not been the case for the people close to him, who had lived out his off-field dramas very publicly.

''I feel more sorry for friends and family who don't deserve to have to deal with my issue on a public level,'' he said.

''Dealing with addiction for families or friends is very hard privately, but to deal with it publicly has been very stressful for my family and friends at times.

''I'm lucky that I do have a fantastic network of people around me, that's gone a long way towards me being here today.''

Cousins hoped the distraction factor would decrease once he became settled at Richmond.

He was eager to slip the spotlight he found himself in so prominently in Perth and settle in a bigger city with 10 clubs opposed to two.

''I [am] really looking forward to making the move [to Melbourne],'' he said. ''West Coast have been a fantastic footy club, Perth has been great to me.

''I've been shot out of the sky they say those who fly the lowest fly the longest so I understand I've probably run my race there.

''I'm just looking forward to moving over here and starting with a new footy club and a new bunch of guys and starting afresh.''

Meanwhile, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says Richmond should be commended for drafting Cousins.

''It's a very courageous decision by the Richmond Football Club,'' Demetriou said yesterday.

''We hope he finishes his career playing football, staying clean and sets an example for what can be achieved if you turn your mind to being positive, staying clean and doing what you love, which in this case happens to be football.''

He brushed off reports Cousins had been associated with underworld figures.

''I think if you go by this particular headline everyone will start working out who their friends are, who they had lunch with, it's now time for all of us to turn our minds to the positives about this,'' he said.

''Which is, this is a person who is endeavouring to recover from a serious illness. He wants to get back into the workforce, and we want that for any person who wants to get back into the workforce as quickly as possible.''

Demetriou said the media coverage around Cousins' return to the sport had been ''extraordinary'', but thought it would die down once training and the season started.

Demetriou said he had no plans to speak with Cousins before Christmas.

I think the whole circus/roadshow/hoopla (call it what you want) is great. Just great.

It introduces Ben to what playing for the Tigers will mean. It shows him just what potential there is for us to be enormous and it must get him thinking what it will be like in front of the Punt Road End army when we are up for it.

It is also good for us. We are a superclub. The great sleeping giant of Australian sport just waiting for stars and wins. Now we have Richo the king, Cuz, Brown hopefully back fit and firing, Deledio and TC who is THE rising star in Vic footy whatever they say about Rioli. We have the stars now roll on the wins and wait to see the mania if we are top 4/6 this year.

It's worked out well for Ben in the end. He got through all the media frenzy in a couple days which was mostly positive apart from a few moaning journos in the Herald-Sun and he now has the Christmas/New Year break to find some space away from the spotlight before he returns to training.

All this publicity for Richmond is really peeing off Blues fans  :rollin

I think it's obscene the amount of publicity the Tigers are getting in the Sun on the net at least. I don't get the paper version. Almost every article has Ben as the photo. One would think he is the only player at the club. The only exception was one on Coughlan the other day.
Richmond have three articles in today's version out of four new articles. All three are about the possible new sponsorship deal and two of them have Ben as the photo accompanying.
I reckon even their supporters would like to know what is happening to somebody else at the club. Cotchin, for one.
And I would like to see the occasional article about Carlton. Preferably not about Judd.

Sounds a lot like Carlton last preseason and the rediculous quantity of press they recieved after securing Judd. Nice to have the tables turned!  :thumbsup
