Who should play FB/CHB in 2005?
« on: September 13, 2004, 08:12:35 PM »
If Gas doesn't find his old pace and leap then like this year we are going to struggle down back in key positions. Which two should get the job while our young blokes are coming through or should we just play the young kids?

WP mentioned Morrison in another post. Does Richo if he lost the weight he put on this year now have the discipline to play at CHB with Schulz up forward? Richo's on-field attitude is probably the best its ever been. Is Hall a defender? Is Bowden a long term option?

Thoughts?

i think that Gas will be much better next season with another full pre-season under his belt.

Centre Half Back is a tough one, i think Wallace may try and use Bowden up the ground more.

I think Ray Hall is best suited to a utility role, plays ok as a changing ruck and can play down back on the right match up and also play tall forward.

Maybe Morrison is worth a try at CHB, theres no way that Richo will play down back if you ask me. Other than that we are stuck with Andrew Kellaway who may play better under Wallace.

Play Schulz full back.  He has the size, speed and aggression to be a good full back.
Alternate Bowden and Morisson at CHB.  Play Bowden on the smaller and more mobile CHF's and Morrison on the bigger ones.  However we will need to find a young CHB who is a bit bigger and better.  No more Gaspar, Chaffey, Fiora and Kellaway.

FB - Zantuck, Schulz, Hartigan
HB - Newman, Morrison, Bowden.

(With Moore and Jackson to be nutured and rotated off the bench)

This lineup immediately gives you more class, hardness and youth.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

I think i am definatly hoping for an injury free pre season from gas and get his confidence and spring back again. He will be a vital part in how we go this year. I dont know about schultz in the backline. Maybe we could have morrison and him in the backline aswell and moore has to be played back aswell he is a natural defender. Ottens will play chf you would think but its good that we have that flexibility.

Backs: Newman, Hartigan, Campbell, Bowden, Moore, Jackson, Pettifer, Zantuck, Morrison, Weller, Andy Kellaway, Gasper.

Heres Hopnig wallace gives them all a try in the pre seaosn and see whats the best fit.

Very nice idea Harry  :thumbsup. Having Newman and Bowden on flanks gives us more scope for rotations through the midfield as well as run and pinpoint passing off the half-back line. Hartigan can also be pushed into the midfield. It would also give Schulz the chance to learn where and where not to lead off the best forwards in the League. IMO he appears in the long term to be a more natural forward and has done well a couple of times when Richo has been absent and Sarge doesn't get ignored by his Richo-blinded teammates.

Good call HarryH.

I think we have to play Morrison down back - not for 5 minutes but for an extended period to see if he is up to it.

I think Moore in particular needs to bulk up but did show at Coburg (on occassions) that he can play on the back line

only problem with Bowden and Newman on the flank is they are both left footers with NO right foot.

We have been too left sided for too long, need to get rid of some of them
