Hawks star Renouf faces charge
Mex Cooper | December 22, 2008 - 10:41AM

Hawthorn ruckman Brent Renouf is due to be charged with criminal damage after a Saturday night out in Melbourne's east.

The premiership player was interviewed after allegedly damaging two parked cars near Henry Street and Burwood Road in Hawthorn near the popular nightspot The Geebung Polo Club.

The 20-year-old, who lives in Malvern, spoke to police in the early hours of Sunday morning and later went to a police station to make a full statement.

A police spokeswoman said he was expected to be charged on summons.

A drunken Renouf jumped on top of one parked vehicle then on to another. He slipped and fell, smashing a rear windscreen, Hawthorn's general manager of football operations Mark Evans told Radio 3AW.

He said a second Hawthorn player, who he refused to name, had pleaded with Renouf to get down from the car and has been cleared of any involvement.

Renouf was leaving a hotel when he allegedly damaged the vehicles, according to a statement released by the club.

A worker at The Geebung Polo Club this morning said the club had closed at midnight on Saturday after a quiet night.

"A remorseful Renouf has accepted full responsibility for the incident, and voluntarily met with police on Sunday, providing a full statement," the statement read.

The club said Renouf would pay for the damage and a hire car for the owners while their vehicle is being fixed.

Mr Evans said the club was "extremely disappointed" at Renouf's actions.

"Brent understands he made some poor choices in relation to alcohol and social behaviour," Mr Evans said.

"Brent will personally meet the cost of damage to the vehicles.

"Hawthorn Football Club players and staff take their social and community responsibility very seriously and no one is more disappointed than the player himself at his actions."

Renouf will be forced to face Club management and the leadership group who will decide what internal action will be taken against the player.

Mr Evans said Renouf had called the club soon after the incident and was extremely embarrassed.

Brent Renouf has been fined $5000 and suspended for the first two rounds of the NAB Cup after damaging parked cars in an alcohol-fuelled incident on the weekend.

I'll pay him a couple hundred if he does the trampoline trick to my car and gets it written off

Maybe a sign some Hawks are still partying after the premiership.

I don't think what he has been handed is fair. Yes it was wrong and stupid, but guess what he's only young and if he wasn't a footballer he would have just got a slap on the wrist.
Yes make him pay to fix the cars and pay a fine.
But I don't think the punishment fits the crime here I think its too harsh.
I know I would be peed off if it was my car. So make him fix it. No problems with that.
All the after things should be left out, we all were young and stupid to, so I think he has been unfairly treated.

I think the punishment is based more on the Hawks been more concerned that he did something that could have resulted in him stuffing up his ankle or knee and ruling him out for 2009. They don't pay him $200k+ to get drunk and think suddenly he's in the movie FAME outside the pub lol :wallywink.
