Newman on SEN
« on: January 10, 2009, 12:14:29 PM »
Newy was on SEN this morning with Liam Pickering @ 11.20

* Newy said there's "a different feeling around the club". The younger guys are coming through and stepping up. Our average age now is around 22 so we believe we are ready to play finals and we're at the start of a more successful period in the next few years.

* Newy spoke about being the new captain and the first thing he had to deal with was all the Cousins drama.

* Cuz has fitted into the playing group and club wonderfully well. He'll add a lot to the team. At the moment he is fit but he/we are just making sure his body stands up to the rigours of footy.

* Our backline with Moore, McGuane and Thursty is settling well as we play more together. Agreed a strong solid defensive unit is important.

* Geelong and Hawthorn leading the way in defence and defensive tactics. We've been working on some new things in defence and right across the ground which has made training exciting.

* Richo has been doing full training which amazed Pickers and the other guy. Richo could take it easier because he can do what he wants (laughs) but he feels guilty if he isn't and he's so competitive he wants to win everything even the warm-up laps. Newy said the older guys did their own thing in October/November but they are back in full training now.

* Training intensity has lifted. Jacko has been a standout in preseason training. Both him and Whitey ran 12:30 around the Tan before Christmas which was the quickest Newy has ever seen or heard of.

Good common sense down to earth commentary from the Skip.

Agreed.  And isn't it funny - it's just the same as what we used to get from the previous skipper but every time he opened his mouth the usual suspects would cry foul.   :banghead

DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Interesting that they were amazed that we had started full season training already. I am unsure of the usual pre-season timeline but this is obviously unusual. Any ideas why?

Stripes they were referring to Richo and what an amazing freak he is to still be doing a full preseason at 34 y.o. alongside the younger guys.

Nah no mentioned of Cotch or any other injured Tigers. The only time Cotch was mentioned was when Liam Pickering said we're putting together a potent midfield with Cousins, Deledio, Foley, Cotchin, Tuck, White, Jackson, etc.

Thanks OE. Richo is a freak. Hope he can maintain his 2008 form. Did I read it correctly that all the senior players are back fully training? When do senior players usually start full pre-season training?

I'm really disappointed that both Connors and Cotchin are being keep from doing a full pres-season especially after hearing they were undertaking additonal training before preseason had even begun such was there determination to make an impact this year. Can't help but think that there enthuniasm has brought this on...

Bloody injuries :banghead
