Wallace on 3aw @ 7.30pm 22/1/09
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:46:26 PM »
Wallace was just on 3aw...

* Yep Cambo did have the mids over to his place for a chat. Glad to have him back at Tigerland and he's been good with the young mids. We did out homework on Cambo on what he did at the dogs. Dogs were sad to lose him. It also refreshed Royal to go into a new role with the forwards. Cambo renewed his friendships with the oldies as well as introduced himself to the players that have arrived since he left.

* Mentioned about the BBQ today. 8-10 of the younger boys were there. Backyard cricket and having some fun. Normally with the young guys the senior coach can come across as a "principal" so it's good at this time of the year to mix and have some lighthearted time together. Normally Plough does the cooking but he was running late so his wife did it.

* Shaw asked if the young defenders have gone past being young and be that solid backline unit? Terry said yes definitely. Moore did that last year. Kept Buddy and Fev quiet. McGuane and especially Thursty didn't initially have continuaity of footy but now hopefully he will.

* Schulz - seen as our 4th tall defender who can push off his man and use it well rebounding. A good kick.

* Caller asked about Cotchin and his lack of preseason? Terry said he's had an interrupted preseason but he's well ahead of where he was 12 months ago and he was able to do things during the off-season. Yeah he had an achillies on his other leg but the medicos say it's not a long term thing he'll stil have when he is 22. It's just his body adjusting.

* Lids - in junior footy could just beat guys on natural ability. It just took him a while to come to terms with the step up and workload required in AFL but he did that last year.

* Jack showed last year he's in our 22 although he knows he needs to step up more this year. Healy asked if Jack could play in the midfield? Terry said not yet as he doesn't yet have the endurance to play midfield and we need him more up forward for our structure.

* Cleve - best is AFL standard but he needs to do that on a week in week out basis.

* Simmo - integral part of our structure. Rucks hurt you more when they go down as you replace them with a younger guy 25kgs less.

* Graham - You're right Shawry about our ruck, we need to see what he can do.

* We did things differenly with our senior boys doing "remote" training. They'd meet with Hornsby and train 3 days a week away from the club. Only do 2 main sessions of the 3 with the main squad to keep them fresh.

* NAB Cup? Most guys up and running except for Cotch. We'll go 3/4 strength into NAB Cup as you are still testing young guys to see if they can play AFL yet. Senior guys will be slowly built up towards round 1 or used on or off to keep them fresh.

* Hislop - his work levels have pleasantly surprised Terry. Tremendous marking ability for a small so we'll use him up forward.

* Vickery - ruck/forward who will play in the NAB Cup at some stage. Speed is his strength at this stage.

* Jacko - came to the club as a super athlete but not much of a footy background. So it's taken time. He's a starter in our best 18 the way he is going now based on his work over this summer.

* Cousins - opportunity given and he's now one of 45.

Thanks OE, just one thing your last sentence on Cotch "but the medicos say it's not a long term thing he'll stil have when he is 22". As Pauline Hanson would say "Please Explain"... :-[

Plough was very excited about Hislop. Let's hope that means the changing of clubs has now got his head into gear.

From this and the Sport 927 interview the other day it seems Wallace is really only concerned about our mature Ruck stocks if Simmo goes down with injury. Gus needs to stand up and deliver now he's had a full preseason otherwise there'll be that susceptibility.

Good to hear Vickery will get a run in the preseason.

Terry meant Cotch's achillies soreness won't be an injury that will still be affecting Cotch when his body has matured at say 22 y.o. It's not something he'll have for the rest of his footy career. The soreness is just related to his body not yet being use to the heavy training workloads (It wouldn't have helped that Cotch went full bore into preseason training doing extra sessions and all as reported at the time). Plough seemed non fussed about it. Let's hope that's right  :pray.

interesting that! Wayne Campbell always seemed to love himself playing with Richmond. so his personality is strong which can be good. only one year with Western i think and now with us, it is brilliant to have old Tigers back at the club!

but with that quote for Wallace, i guess ... Brown, Bowden, Richardson, Johnson and possibly Simmonds (oldies :)) during Campbell's playing days could of seen things differently. i would love to hear if Campbell and Bowden at each other! ROFLMFAO!

Wallace may not be the best coach in the comp but he's no fool. He knows which way is up.

Without a single doubt Troy Simmonds(again) is the key to our season and Wallace's career.

He'll be praying like Moses that the big guy stays fit and can deliver but geez there's a lot of eggs in the one basket. :-\.

So true and that Gus steps up as much as Plough is hoping he will to take all the workload off Simmo.
