Bents is that how many games will 'x' play this season out of 22?

If so then
* Johnson - 16....... Sugar usually cops a soft tissue injury as he gets older.
* Bowden - 16........ Slow starter.
* Pettifer - 2 or 3........ at the most.
* McMahon - 22.......... Jordie would still be in Wallace's plans.
* King - 8........ I think Kingy will be a fringe player
* Pattison - 8 ........ not sure where Patto stands now that Gus has been given the 2nd ruck spot.
* Jackson - 22 ........... Jacko needs to play every game barring injury.
* Polo - 12 .......... on the fringe
* Hughes - 14 ............ I reckon they will persist with Cleve at FF this year.

Agree with the above MT, I think Bents is aiming this thread at 'fringe' players, but agree that McMahon isn't really on that list...which is going to cause a lot of grief on OER this year, I can see that now.

The only one I'd go different on is Polo. I think he will really struggle for a game this year, it appears that the other smalls have gone ahead of him...younger ones too. Polo needs to get some more strings to his bow (read:goalkicking) and fast.

If it's true that Gus has gone ahead of Patto, then with the exception of Deledio the 2004 draft is practically a complete write off. (Apologies to McGuane but he was pick #6 that year for us)

 * Pettifer - 0
 * McMahon -23
 * King - 5
 * Pattison - 14
 * Jackson - 22
 * Polo - 15
 * Hughes - 6

Well we will agree to disagree on a few of those MT  ;D

 * Johnson - 6 Not the skipper any more and will have to show a lot to retain his spot. Agree injuries could also be an issue
 * Bowden - 20 Not without his detractors but at the end of the day the guy is a good player still better than some Q-backing out of the Def
 * Pettifer - 0 Knee injury will not help him out. Mid year retiree
 * McMahon - 7 I'm living in hope that someone stomps on Terry's Rose coloured glasses. Hope this is the case
 * King - 7 Average last year after a great start. Can a role be found on some opposition smalls?
 * Pattison - 16 Clearly better around the ground than Gus, Terry will see this.
 * Jackson - 22 Good tagger improving each year must continue to develop
 * Polo - 18 Will get more of a run at the start of the year than he might of due to Cotch's injury. Will show Terry he is a player.
 * Hughes - 16 We need him to continue to develop, will play when match-ups dictate. Must get involved

The above list is a mixture of what I hope will happen and the reasons why.  :pray

I am unsure whether Johnson is in our best 22 and even if he does make the side I think his game time will be limited.

The only one I have changed my mind on recently is Polo, if his attitude is right I think he may have a decent year.

* Johnson -8
 * Bowden -20
 * Pettifer - 4
 * McMahon -22
 * King - 6
 * Pattison - 16
 * Jackson - 22
 * Polo - 18
 * Hughes - 12

I think that the only chance of that happening is if he is dislodged by Raines and I am not sure if that will happen.  However Raines game against the Frockers was a good start.

If we don't play many of the above group, the best XXII looks something like:

Moore - Thursfeild - McGaune
Newman - Rance - Edwards
Cousins - Deledio - White
Richo - Reiwoldt - Cotchin
Morton - Brown - Tambling
Simmonds - Tuck - Foley

Schultz
Coughlan
Thomson
Connors

Yep pretty much agree with that, very strong looking side.

I think Patto or Gus will need to be on the bench to spell Snake.  Also I think Mcmahon will be on a HBF, if not him then Raines, of course your side is the best 22 not what TW will go with.  Plus Jackson should be in there IMO.

I think my above 22 highlights our weakness in the KPP / ruck area still. Patto works hard but is dopy and has question marks on him. Gus simply is not good enough. If we play a 2nd ruckman to rest Simmo - it means on of our 'runners' (Cogs, Edwards, White, Thomson etc.) is going to have to miss out to accommodate the 2nd ruckman.

Could Schultz play the role as 2nd ruck? ie. like Polak was doing at some stage before he got hit by a tram. It would give us more flexibility. I would hope Jay can compete cause the 2nd rucks in the comp like Kep Bradley. He'd be a handy option with his mature body to throw stuff also. Lets hope Post / Vickery start to push for selection soon.

Who misses out to allow Raines/McMahon & Jackson to play? Coughlan, Connors, Thomson?

Yes.

 Connors isn't ready yet and remains too individualistic and selfish to fit in the side as yet. He needs to learn how to play FOR his teammates and not always look for the flashy glory on the field.

Cogs hasn't convinced me he has the pace or agility to make the grade as yet. He will need to play out of his skin to make it into our midfield this year and hardes of all - remain injury free.

Thomson is an unknown and is more for depth than anything. If we had a choice of a good average midfield or a ruck relief like Gus/Patto then I think the choice is clear.

In terms of Schulz playing in the ruck that brings back memories of Tucky and Richo attempting to play in the ruck in 2007.... :help. Even against duds Kepley Bradley he would be killed.

Yeah the majority of the first 18 is pretty settled although Rance is the one unknown quantity there at AFL level to be classed as a starter.

You would need one of Gus/Patto on the bench as Stripes said to help out Simmo in the ruck. Rainesy would be ahead of most on the bench there.

Hi All,

I find it really perplexing that people put Rance in our best 22! Considering he has not even played a game before!!.. Not only in our best 22 but in the untouchable 10 at our club in another tread. Only time will tell but BIG call in both cases.
Also on Gus, i think he may surprise a few this year. Fingers crossed.
