Best XXII after first two practice game?
« on: February 27, 2009, 12:05:03 PM »
I would say:

Newman Thursfeild McGaune
Polo Rance Moore
Thomson Coughlan Connors
Cousins Riewoldt Cotchin
Deledio Richo Brown
Simmonds Tuck Foley

Tambling Moton Post Patto

Bowden perhaps gets Posts spot.  :(

 * Hughes - not good enough
 * Raines / White / Edwards - must learn to kick
 * Jackson / Johnson / McMahon -> meh

As much as I'm a fan, I'm not sure Connors deserves a starting spot based on this preseason either. Has he played in either of the NAB Cup matches? I don't think so.

Pretty slow midfield too

Just based on who played so leaving out Cotchin, Cogs, Patto, Connors, Putt, JON etc

B-    Newman Thursfeild McGaune
HB-  McMahon Rance Moore
C-    Richo Jackson Deledio
HF-  Cousins Riewoldt Tambling
F -   Morton Hughes Brown
Foll -Simmonds, Tuck, Foley,

Int - White, Thomson, Post, GUS,

We need a key forward to step up and Hughes is the only option who even looks remotely playable in the position of those who have played to date. I think, of those who haven't played, Schulz should be given a chance in the position if Hughes does not show something very soon.

Rance should be given a spot in the backline over Raines. He is bigger, stronger, just as quick and has much better decision making and foot skills. He looked like a player of the future while Raines still seems the same one dimensional player as he ever was.

GUS looks good to me. He has added strength to his frame and is competing well in ruck contests. He still need to develop his ball use around the ground but I have been impressed to date. Patto may find it more difficult to keep his place as 2nd ruck place in the team but I still believe he is better around the ground than Gus at the moment.

I heard a lot of people both here and on talkback after the game putting down Tambling and White. I find this hard to believe. I went to the game last night and I felt that both played god games. They both made a couple of mistakes but at other times they were excellent. Both were fast and broke lines. Both were elusive and linked up well with teammates. Both were risk takers and took the opposition on. We should be encouraging these type of mistakes rather than belittling players over them. We we have a team to scared to make mistakes then we will never break through zones or challenge at any stage.

Jackson has really stepped up this year. He is going to be a great tagger for us given his speed, endurance and strength. He racked up the possession last week while all the while keeping his opponent quiet. He could be a better looking version of Ling for us!  :shh

This is a difficult exercise, Id like to be leaving out the blokes who cant kick the footy properly alas we have quite a few and it becomes quite difficult. Players like Post probably need 12 months at Coburg likewise Tyrone Vickery as well. Rance has had his 12 months at Coburg and is ready for senior action. So with a view to R1 ...

DEAN POLO     WILL THURSFIELD     KELVIN MOORE
CHRIS NEWMAN     ALEX RANCE     JORDAN MCMAHON
MATTHEW RICHARDSON     TRENT COTCHIN (If Available)     DANIEL CONNERS (If Available)
SHANE TUCK     JACK RIEWOLDT     BEN COUSINS
NATHAN BROWN     BRETT DELEDIO     MITCHELL MORTON
TROY SIMMONDS     ADAM THOMSON     NATHAN FOLEY
LUKE MCGUANE    ADAM PATTISON     RICHARD TAMBLING     DANIEL JACKSON

Pretty midget sized bench, pretty big ask on Simmonds to carry the ruck all by himself

I had Gus on the bench for a start, but thought Matty deserved a go. I forgot all about Raines as well.

White definitely deserves a spot ahead of Collins
Hope he comes on this year, but White is miles ahead of him
