Prefer though this kind of statement was kept behind closed doors for the players themselves and no one else. Preseason talk in public is cheap. It's actions that the football world remembers and until we prove otherwise everyone will laugh at us making such a comment after just 2 finals appearances in 26 years even if it comes from Sheeds.

I suppose that's where i was sort of coming from MT.

As I said if anyone else made the comment they would have been howled down ... Sheeds says it and it's great marketing.

why not talk it up
Hawthorn won the flag & we played 2 top games against them winning one & losing the other by a mere 12 points
anything can happen with the right motivation
We have hungry players & we can make a huge push this year.
The talking is over, there is no more excuses about getting Sheedy or poor skills.
We have recruited very well in the past few years & the time is in the next 2-3 years for a premiership
l think we now have the goods to win at least 1 & be a finals contender for at least 4 years

Sheeds will be lauded a genius again if we were by some miracle to pull it off but the club as a whole will be mocked if we fail like Peter Schwab and Hawthorn were.

Let's make the finals first and more than once in a blue moon before we start talking about flags.

Have to agree MT.
I wonder if Terry knew what Sheed's speech entailed?
Can't imagine he'd have been thrilled.

At the end of the day though it matters little.
We make the 8 and Wally is safe, we don't and he's gawn.

The difference is that Schwab was the coach, Sheedy isnt'

Did I completely misread the article/interview?  I thought Sheedy's comments were pointed towards motivating the playing group, not predicting where we would finish.

Well Sheeds tipped us to finish 5th in the Hun today unless he believes we'll take the finals by storm once we get there  ;D.

You're right smokey to say Sheeds doesn't say we'll win the flag definitely as he mentions Geelong and Hawthorn would need to be 5% off their game and us to play 5% above our usual selves. However mentioning flag and Richmond in the same sentence isn't something you would think anyone else would do about a club that hasn't even made the finals for at least 8 years and only twice in the past 26. If it comes true he'll be called Nostradamus lol.

Caro was all for what Sheeds said. If you can't be positive about the future at the start of the season then why bother. He was just trying to pump up the place and it was all in good fun. The only downside was when Terry got up to speak all the players were out the back waiting to be presented with their guernseys whereas Sheeds was able to speak directly to the players in the room.

Oh well false pretences are out of us now.

Lets get our heads back down and working hard and take it one game at a time.

Sheedy says Tigers can still win flag
richmondfc.com.au
By Ben Broad 4:07 PM Tue 31 March, 2009

KEVIN Sheedy has implored Tiger fans to keep the faith and says there is no reason why Richmond still can’t win the flag in 2009.

“Well, why not? Why not?” he said. “I probably lost about four of my first six games [coaching Essendon] in 1993.

“We were 50-1 and won the premiership by eight goals.

“So if you had have asked me after round one or two or three or four or five, ‘what are your chances in 1993?’ I would have laughed at you.

“It’s all about the spirit and the resolve in the people.”

The one-time Richmond premiership player and now membership and marketing man says fans shouldn’t despair after their team’s disappointing 83-point round one loss.

As he did at the Tigers’ season launch earlier this month, Sheedy said his old club needed to believe it could go all the way.

“Always aim for the top,” he said.

“If you don’t aim to get the best out of yourselves, you shouldn’t be out on the ballpark.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s Carlton; it doesn’t matter whether it’s the Western Bulldogs; it doesn’t matter whether it’s the Kangaroos.

“You run out there you should always set your sights on eventually winning a premiership. Whether it takes a year or two or three, it’s up to you.”

Sheedy says he was content in his new role at the club where he played 251 games and did not have his eyes on coach Terry Wallace’s job.

“I’m very happy where I am working in marketing and membership because we’re up,” Sheedy said.

sheedy is right, every team should believe they can win and enter a season believing they can win.

if they dont why bother even being in the comp
