The Essence of the Game - 8.30pm tonight
« on: March 20, 2009, 04:26:20 PM »
The Essence of the Game doco is on tonight. The one they've been talking about in the media with Clarkson using a shark to describe Geelong and how to beat them before last year's GF.

Don't know if there's anything from/about Richmond in it but the doco goes for 2 hours so you would think so.

Edit. This is the spiel from BF:

Channel 7 Friday March 20, VIC, SA, WA/ SCTV in TAS, NT
Channel 7 Sunday March 22, 11:00am - 1:00pm Sydney, Brisbane

An amazing all-access look into this unique Australian game. For the first time, cameras have been allowed into the dressing rooms during the entire season. Take a behind-the-scenes look at what makes football clubs tick, including Hawthorn and Geelong on grand final day. Also celebrate the breadth of the game, looking at kids to international teams and what footy means to them.

Features:

Darebin Falcons
Manly Bombers
Xavier College
Tigers Corporate Cup
Western Bulldogs
Collingwood Cheersquad
West Coburg
The Peace Team
Hawthorn Football Club
plus lots more!

Too much about Hawthorn which was actually quite dull but other than that the doco was quite good. The Tigers corporate game segment was nice. The Tiger supporting dad who had played in the corporate game coming home in the dark, parking the car facing the backyard with the headlights on and playing footy with his young son in Richmond gear wearing Cogs' #24. When the dad says it's raining do you want to go in, the kid replies nah lol.

Robert Dickson who made the doco as well as the Doco The Passion To Play did play for Hawthorn in the late 1980's and still has ties with the Hawthorn Footy Club hence the large Hawk influence in the doco. I just wonder if the Cats had won last years big one whether Clarko's quarter and three quarter time speech would have made the editors cut.

Nevertheless I thought Clarko's speech referring to Geelong about the shark and trying to deny it space and equating it to catching a shark in the net as well, is a classic case of a  coach recognising what an opposition teams weakness is and exposing it to its benefit. :thumbsup

Ex-Hawk Rob Dickson, who made the AFL doco 'The Essence of the Game', and his five-year-old son were killed overnight in a car crash in South Africa  :(
