How much is your AFL team's coach worth?
Mike Sheahan | April 01, 2009

Herald Sun chief football writer Mike Sheahan estimates your AFL club coach's base salary.

Michael Malthouse (Coll) - $900,000

Paul Roos (Syd) - $700,000

Mark Thompson (Geel) - $650,000

John Worsfold (WC) - $650,000

Alastair Clarkson (Haw) - $650,000

Rodney Eade (WB) - $600,000

Michael Voss (BL) - $600,000

Mark Williams (Port) - $600,000

Neil Craig (Adel) - $550,000

Terry Wallace (Rich) - $525,000

Dean Laidley (NM) - $475,000

Mark Harvey (Frem) - $475,000

Brett Ratten (Carl) - $450,000

Ross Lyon (St K) - $450,000

Matthew Knights (Ess) - $350,000

Dean Bailey (Melb) - $300,000

Mike also adds this in another article today....

What, for argument's sake, happens if Collingwood maintains its stance on Michael Malthouse and leaves the coaching position on hold until season's end?

The longer that situation continues, the greater the speculation Nathan Buckley or Mark Williams or Dean Laidley . . . or Eade will be courted.

What if Richmond is enduring such a bad season in three months' time, Gary March decides to inquire about Malthouse's plans post 2009 . . . if he hasn't already?

Except for Voss and I think Eade (has he won a premiership) they are all premiership coaches above Wallace. This sounds about right.

Can't believe Voss is on $600,000. Still, that is probably quite a saving when compared to what Leigh Matthews was on.

It does say that they are estimates.

If we do go after Malthouse, would we be paying him $900k as well???

geez how good would malthouse be at Punt Road.

Bring that on i say.

He is a real coach who is tough and wont stand for mediocricy like Wallace.

I'm surprised TW didn't land in at ninth, it would have been more fitting

Based on those figures, Malthouse is clearly the most overpaid coach in the AFL

He is also one of the best coaches around...gets the most out of his players...his list at the pies is not studded with stars yet they play solid accountable footy...

His record speaks for itself...wooden spooners in 99 - grand finalists 2 years in a row in 02 and 03 and mulitple finals in the decade or so that he has been at the pies...let alone west coast record etc...

i Agree with you about the whinging but gee what a coach.

Doesnt stand for anything at his club and any player who is not performing is out the door.

Very very very average list but look what he seems to do with them. Finals every year.

Was a tough nut at Richmond in the 80's and it shows as coach.

Forget hardwick, forget sheeds, forget everyone.

If Malthouse leaves the pies, he should be our MAN

Wayne Campbell starts off on $300,000. That means we will save $225,000 a year.

Are your sure about that?

You've been saying for the last 5 years Wallace is on $600k

So does this mean Mike's right and you were wrong  ;D

Does the real rebuilding start with the next coach.

Frawley seemed to be the only one who would take the job, he didn't have any support in regards to recruiting. He got us to a final, but left the list in a real mess.

Wallace was hired to lift the profile of the club and also was regarded as one of the better coaches available. We've done well off field with him, but still no real on-field improvement.

The next coach gets a young list, a good off field team, a couple of new training facilities and it shouldn't take long to turn the team into finals contenders.

And will be hailed a master coach all on the back of the hard work of the previous coach..... :whistle Way of the world I guess.  :-X
