Looking back to 1990 and 2006 wins at Kardinia Park

Tigers faithful reminded of a rare win

WE thought that the long-suffering Richmond fans deserved some joy before their team cops another likely pounding by the Cats tomorrow.

So, this week we're recalling one of the Tigers rare wins at Kardinia Park.

A crowd of 21,181 filled the ground on Mother's Day, 1990, expecting to see the Cats notch up their fifth straight win and they started the game like that was going to be a mere formality.

But, the Cats radar went haywire in the second term to give Richmond a sniff of hope that an upset was capable.

Not that Cats fans in recent times need any reminding of bad kicking for goals, but this was something else.

Geelong kicked nine straight points as goals to skipper Dale Weightman, Michael Mitchell and Tim Powell saw the Tigers snatch the lead, before Robert Scott finally steadied the Cats with a major just before half-time.

After the break, the stunned crowd watched as Richmond piled on the goals whereas Geelong could only manage five points for the third term and the Tigers went into three-quarter time with a five-goal lead.

The Cats hit back at the start of the last term urged on by their faithful and four straight goals saw them close the gap to just 10 points.

But, when new captain Andrew Bews left the field with a serious knee injury late in the match, Geelong's momentum was stopped.

Late goals to Des Ryan and spearhead Jeff Hogg saw the Tigers leave Geelong with a memorable victory and break its eight game losing streak against the Cats.

For the record, the Cats finished with 28 points for the game from 37 shots. It was Geelong's fifth most inaccurate performance in the club's history.

Interesting that Tambling got a Brownlow vote for that game in 2006.Also 12 of our 17 goals were kicked by players no longer in the team.
Have a look at the Geelong team...Good team on paper.
