lets all step outside the square for a sec and think about this with no emotion and loyalties
in his 5th year of coaching at this club, terry has not improved the team, its performance , its style of play etc etc
these are cold hard facts, reality often hurts

in saying this, if terry is not going to coach us in 2010, cut all ties now.
we are just wasting time

DENIS Pagan has denied he is trying to snare the Richmond job from embattled Tigers coach Terry Wallace. Following Richmond's fourth straight loss - to last year's wooden spooners Melbourne on Sunday - speculation Wallace would be sacked was rampant.

But Pagan, who took North Melbourne to two flags, said his comments were badly timed and he had apologised to Wallace.

"I don't ring anybody up and say, 'I want to coach'. People ask me," Pagan told SEN.

The men most likely
Compiled by Michael Gleeson | April 21, 2009

THE COACHING CANDIDATES:

WAYNE CAMPBELL
Richmond assistant

The former captain and four-time best-and-fairest winner is well-regarded even if the timing is considered premature for him. One scenario touted would have a senior figure such as Michael Malthouse join the Tigers for two years to mentor Campbell. He could also fill in as a caretaker.

NATHAN BUCKLEY
Former Collingwood captain

Six-time best-and-fairest winner, seven-time All-Australian, Brownlow medallist. Buckley has said he plans to coach in the AFL next year but is yet to say if he is prepared to contemplate doing a Michael Voss and going in without an assistant year or two.

MICK MALTHOUSE
Collingwood coach

As a proven successful coach - dual West Coast premiership coach - and a former Richmond premiership player he has appeal. If he is not re-signed by the Pies could be a chance. Would address concerns of selfishness and being committed to the cause.

LEON CAMERON
Western Bulldogs assistant

Former Richmond and Bulldogs player and current Bulldog assistant who is well regarded. Understated but with considerable understanding of the game. Understands the Tigers culture.

DAMIEN HARDWICK
Hawthorn assistant

The former Essendon and Port Adelaide premiership player has an exceptional pedigree for the fact he has been on the Hawthorn coaching panel. No-nonsense player and highly regarded by Port and the Hawks for his thinking on the game. Was on the short list for the Essendon job when Matthew Knights was appointed.

CHRIS BOND
Fremantle football manager

Popular and respected former Richmond best-and-fairest winner and Fremantle captain. Was a long-term assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs. Having been a bridesmaid several times in the hunt for a coaching job, he shifted across to management at Fremantle. The experience should enhance, not harm, his prospects.

MARK WILLIAMS
Port Adelaide coach

If the choice is for an experienced coach, Williams’ return to Melbourne is a wildcard. The Port premiership coach has never hidden his desire to coach one of the big Melbourne clubs.

BRAD SCOTT
Collingwood assistant

The former Brisbane Lion dual premiership player has been an assistant coach at Collingwood since retiring at the end of 2007. Extremely highly rated by his former and current clubs as a definite future senior coach.

SCOTT BURNS
West Coast assistant

Former Collingwood captain. Respected, no-nonsense character and astute thinker on the game. Has only had one season as an assistant, but is rated a future senior coach.

MARK RILEY
Carlton assistant

Former Demons assistant who took over as caretaker after Neale Daniher left and has been at Carlton since. Insightful football thinker with strong personality. Works well with young players.

POSSIBLE CARETAKERS:

BRIAN ROYAL

Should Terry Wallace not see out the year his long-term assistant Royal, the Tigers’ director of coaching, would be the easy choice to guide the side without being a considered a candidate.

DAVID KING

Former North Melbourne dual premiership player. Has been an assistant coach at Richmond since 2005 when he retired from playing. Highly regarded internally at Richmond and may be a choice to take over in the interim.

THE MARKET
Who will coach Richmond in 2010? Sportsbet's speculative odds*

$4 Nathan Buckley
$5 Wayne Campbell, Mark Williams
$7.50 Kevin Sheedy
$8.50 Damien Hardwick
$12 Brad Scott, David King
$14 Michael Malthouse
$17 Rodney Eade, Brenton Sanderson
$21 John Longmire
$23 Robert Harvey
$26 Nigel Lappin
$34 Brian Royal
$51 Leigh Matthews
$501 Terry Wallace

* Not taking bets on this market yet

Walls' view....

RICHMOND

Terry Wallace will depart this year, hopefully later rather than sooner. Malthouse would be ideal if the Tigers were looking for experience. If they opt for a young, first-time coach, Buckley, Wayne Campbell, Viney and Hardwick should be considered.

I reckon Malthouse's odd should be higher than that.

My preferences would be:

New school
Hardwick
Buckley

Old School
Malthouse
Roos

It appears as though the coaching pool is as strong as ever. I dont believe there will be the coaching exodus as the media purports! Whenever Richmond are on the prowl for a new coach, so does every other Tom,idiot and Harry.

Yep and we either end up with a dud
as we did in 1999 as no candidate with any substance wants to touch us
anyone Remember Bomber Thompsons comments?
We either have an opportunity to pick someone and we select the wrong option
as we did in 2004. Boy were alot of us sucked in.
Or we just pick the best available coach at the time who is just doing the job at that time like Gieschen was in 1997. In hindsight would Giesche had got the job if we had lost that famous round 22 game against the Scum at Optus coming from 42 points down?

To get a candidate of any real substance and credentialls we will need to change our culture as the prospective candidate would either use that culture against us to over inflate his price to beyond any reason that would make us commit due to the external perception people have of the RFC.
Hence at the moment  coaches who are past it like Ayres and Pagan are seeing us as a ticket to that last attempt to glory and a free ride on the gravy train.  Either way as always with us the new appointee I believe will be a controversial choice rather than a logical choice.

Roos won't coach anywhere but Sydney, he does not consider himself as a career coach and is already grooming Longmire to take over from him down the track

.............. and is already grooming Longmire to take over from him down the track

And this is where I disagree with the 'accepted' path to a coaching career.  I don't believe grooming of coaches works.  I think (generally) the best coaches have, at most, one short stint as an assistant and then get a main gig, well before they have had their own ideas and methods stifled by 'advice' from numerous or long term prejudices of others.  Of course there will always be an exception but in my opinion the longer an assistant coach, the less likely you are to make it as a senior coach.  A far better path is to go coach a senior team in a major provincial, metropolitan or interstate competition.  Learn your craft the 'learning' way - by doing it yourself.  Seek advice when you feel you need it but don't allow the subordinate aspect of working under someone else to corrupt your own thinking.

Watching the ANZAC day clash between Essendon and Collingwood.

Certainly prefer Knights straight down the guts style over Malthouse's around the boundary line crap.

Maybe not Malthouse for the Tigers?

The only coach that should follow on from Terry Wallace's 5 years is......................

TERRY WALLACE. :bow

Lets stick PHAT and keep him on for another 3 years. The young guys will come through, but we don't need another coach to start the process all over again.

Don't forget, my opinion is just as invalid as every other bloody idiot who posts on any internet forum.
