Deadline set for Malthouse
Caroline Wilson | April 17, 2009

MICK Malthouse will know by June whether or not he has a future at Collingwood.

The dual premiership coach, who will have completed a decade at the helm of the Magpies at the end of this season, will have a firm idea of his prospects when the club enters the mid-season bye after its Queen's Birthday clash with Melbourne on June 8.

The AFL's oldest and one of the most respected mentors in the game has become increasingly linked with Richmond beyond 2009. Tigers coach Terry Wallace is fighting to keep his job while the Magpies have a firm eye on their favourite son, the recently retired Nathan Buckley.

.... Malthouse, a Richmond premiership player, has been unofficially raised in Tiger circles as a senior coach overseeing the still relatively inexperienced Wayne Campbell should Wallace fail to lift his team.

The unofficial round 11 deadline sits close to the date being set by the AFL Coaches' Association for senior coaches and clubs to begin contract negotiations.

Mark Williams and Dean Laidley — both out of contract this year — have clauses in their deals demanding some future certainty by the end of June.

BLA BLA tripple BLA

why do journos try and make headlines based on assuptions.

here is a hypothetical question, what if collingwood finish bottom 6 this year and we finish top 6, will these assumptions be made?

seems caro is off the sheedy wagon

Malthouse would bring a substantial amount of credibility to the role. I think he would be a good choice from the experienced brigade, whilst Hardwick would be the rookie coach option.  :clapping

100% correct

either option would be great.

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

What I don't understand is why there is still a mention of a senior coach coming in to oversee the rookie Wayne Campbell
Why the hell is he the chosen one?

I have no problem with Malthouse as coach as long as he's hired to be senior coach and not just some mentor to the next in line.

You made that up. Just this week Eade on footy classified said Campbell was early in his coaching development and is too inexperienced for a senior gig.

I know for a fact Eade didnt rate Campbell.

First up caro was never on the Sheedy bandwagon. I will give her that, she has said all along that Sheedy's coaching days are over

But the other point you raise is a good one

What happens come the end of June when supposedly decisions are going to made at a number of clubs and the win/loss ratio is evenly split or 6-5 or 5-6 meaning not guaranteed finals but not out of the race either

I reckon some clubs have made a rod for their own back with their "criteria"
"Oh yes I am a dreamer, I still see us flying high!"

Malthouse will never coach Richmond.

1) When he finished with the Bulldogs he approached the club for the senior gig and they embarrassed him.

2) And there was also something Mal Brown did that swore Malthouse off the club for good.

3) His grudge against the club extends to not attending 1980 GF reunions

4) He laughed us off when he was leaving the Eagles

There is no way in the world Malthouse would take a gig as a mentor to anyone let alone Wayne "I kissed everyone's ars" Campbell

This is another example of how deluded our "Tiger circles" and the coiterie groups Caro relies on are thinking that Malthouse will come running back after years of antipathy towards the club.

He hates us full stop. Maybe someone has a better memory than I do about whether his behavior is justified or not

Good post 1980.Living in Perth it was big news when Mick left the Eagles and I have never forgotten his polite "No Thanks" when it was suggested he coach Richmond.

I rate Mick as a coach...you have to respect how he can get a "good ordinary team" to play good finals football like he has at Collingwood.

However you wonder how Malthouse would go at Tigerland if he started like he did at the pies....losing 15 of the last 17 games of the year.

KB was still our coach when Malthouse left the Doggies in 1989.

We don't need a L-plater as coach with an overseer. When has that ever worked. It didn't at Carlton (Parkin/Brittain) or Hawthorn (Parkin/Schwab). Malthouse's years as coach are numbered anyway.

i sat in the bulldogs coaches box last year, and i reckon you are making this up. Eade totally respected and listened to everything wayne had to say, infact , he was the only assistant coach to even speak in the box. Eade did not wanna lose wayne and thats a fact. Now if eade didnt rate campbell why the hell did he employ him???????
i witness how they worked in the coaches bos and what eade told me totally contradicts what you say
i believe what i experienced and heard and not what you say
it is not half obvious you hate campbell! so you stop making crap up!
My brother knows Eade very well, may just call him to confirm what you are saying is tripe
