Reports: Nil

Umpires: James, Hay, Meredith

Official crowd: 29,224 at Docklands

--------------------------------------

A DOMINANT forward performance from Jack Riewoldt has led Richmond to its first win of the season at Docklands on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos jumped the Tigers early, kicking the first three, but the visitors booted 10 of the next 13 to lead by 27 points at the last change before winning by 36 points, 13.16 (94) to 7.16 (58).

With star Matthew Richardson off early in the second with a hamstring injury, the Tigers were forced to change their focus in attack and Riewoldt stepped up, kicking three in the second before the midfield fired in the third to add to the Roos' misery.

The game was a war of attrition early – Roos skipper Brent Harvey was forced from the field with a dislocated left elbow just 12 minutes in and sat out the rest of the match, then teammate Michael Firrito followed two minutes later with a left leg injury, although he returned.

Richardson returned late in the third, although with a distinct limp, but then North's Lachie Hansen went off early in the last clutching a hamstring.

The Harvey injury will cause a nervous wait for the Roos, with Eagle Beau Waters set to miss the entire 2009 season after dislocating his elbow midway through last season.

For the Tigers, Shane Tuck led contested possessions, a major problem area for Richmond this season, and he was closely followed by young Robbie Nahas.

Angus Graham was good all game, making space and generally being effective around the ground as well as in the ruck.

Jordan McMahon played an excellent game while Richard Tambling and Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, completing a much-maligned trio at Punt Rd, also showed plenty of effort and desire.

Mark Coughlan made a welcome return to the big time after three years on the sidelines, getting through the game and running and tackling well.

He was good through the midfield, as was Brett Deledio.

For the Roos, Andrew Swallow did well to kick three, former skipper Adam Simpson was good in the clinches, Gavin Urquhart gave good drive off a wing, Drew Petrie offered a strong target up forward, as did David Hale when he went down there.

Early in the game it was all Roos, with Hale starting the ball rolling with a snap off the left inside 90 seconds, then youngsters Jack Ziebell and Andrew Swallow got the lead out to 19 points.

But that joy soon turned to despair with first Harvey and then Michael Firrito off the ground, and the Tigers looked a lot better in kicking the last two of the term, with Nahas good in the buildup of both, and Richmond trailing by just one straight kick at the first change.

Riewoldt kicked the first of the second term and gave the Tigers the lead after a beautiful general-play tap-on from tyro ruckman Adam Pattison, but a horrible error from Brett Deledio presented Andrew Swallow with the chance to reply.

But the Tigers were confident and it showed in their ball use, with Nahas bagging one before Riewoldt booted a brace. Aaron Edwards then kicked a major to get the margin back to just seven points at the long break.

Four goals to one in the third saw the Tigers break the game open, with even defender Kelvin Moore running hard to get forward to score, and the Tigers led by 27 points at the last change.

In the last, the Roos had their chances but kicked a mass of behinds while the Tigers scored three majors to one to sew it up.

Next week, the Roos are up against Collingwood on Friday night, while Richmond treks to the MCG to play the Swans.

Richmond: Riewoldt, Jackson, McMahon, Nahas, Rance, Deledio, Tuck

Hardly think so, no White no Bowden.

Riewoldt didnt have a four quarter consistent game, his first quarter and a half was shocking, dropped marks and missed goals.  Will grant that the rest of the game was very good though.

Tigers sink Roos to open account
Martin Boulton | April 26, 2009

RICHMOND ended a horror start to the season and gave coach Terry Wallace some breathing space with a convincing 36-point win against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium last night.

The seeds of the victory were sown in the Tigers' readiness to take risks, open up the game and exploit the Kangaroos' growing list of casualties as the match slowly turned into a war of attrition.

North Melbourne opened an early lead through brisk, attacking football, including two long kicks forward from Michael Firrito that led directly to goals to David Hale and second-gamer Ben Warren.

With Drew Petrie starting in attack, the Kangaroos had opted for a tall forward set-up, but as the game opened up and the Tigers grew in confidence, ran hard and took risks, Petrie alternated between both arcs.

A goal to Andrew Swallow inside 10 minutes stretched the margin to 19 points, but when Kangaroos skipper Brent Harvey crashed heavily to the ground in a Daniel Jackson tackle the momentum shifted. The Roos' champion suffered a dislocated elbow.

Three minutes after Harvey's night ended, badly hurting his side's run, Firrito hobbled off with an injured ankle and the Tigers pounced.

In just his third game Robin Nahas provided the spark that's been sadly lacking at Punt Road in the first month of the season.

After crashing to their fourth loss in a row the Tigers sniffed blood last night after Deledio goaled late in the first term. Richard Tambling was on the end of a slick, in-tight, handball from Nahas, which Tambling drilled forward, giving Deledio a chance to run into an open goal and soccer the ball through, cutting the margin to six points.

The second term started poorly for the Tigers, losing Matthew Richardson with a suspected hamstring problem. The veteran forward spent a quarter and a half off the ground, but his return midway through the third term provided another desperately needed spark for his side.

Richmond also missed easy shots at goal in the opening stages of the second term before Jack Riewoldt kicked the first of this three majors to put his side in front by a point.

Riewoldt's 14 marks might have pleased Wallace even more than his three goals, especially two in the opening minutes of the quarter that visibly lifted his teammates. It was a mature, steady performance from the young forward when his side needed it the most.

The Kangaroos hit the front again with Swallow's second goal, but Mark Coughlan, in his first game in nearly three years, had a chance to snatch the lead back soon afterwards. He missed, but the 2003 best-and-fairest winner's first game back was one to remember.

Before last night the last time Richmond beat the Kangaroos was round 11, 2006, the week before Coughlan wrecked his knee and spent almost three years returning to the Tigers' midfield.

He finished last night with 16 disposals, five marks and five tackles. And a victory.

The winning look started taking shape midway through the second term when Nahas again found himself in space and goaled from a set shot.

Despite Richmond's improved pressure, tackling and a willingness to take the game on, it continued producing costly turnovers.

After the margin grew to 14 points the Kangaroos counter-punched when Lindsay Thomas delivered a perfectly weighted kick to Aaron Edwards, who goaled in his first game back in the seniors after a club-imposed suspension.

As both sides threw themselves at everything, the casualties mounted, Shane Tuck forced off after a knee to the ribs, Tigers second-gamer Andrew Collins with a cut chin, Kangaroos youngster Jack Ziebell flattened, but desperate to get to the next contest.

Richardson returned 17 minutes into the third term with Richmond holding a narrow lead, but his appearance inspired more than just the Tiger faithful and when Kelvin Moore, Collins and then Tuck goaled in the space of a few minutes the margin blew out to 27 points.

Between half-time and the midway point of the third term the Kangaroos kicked 1.9, while the Tigers kicked seven second-half goals and took control of the midfield.

Deledio, who finished the game with 25 touches, became the dominant player on the ground and he was solidly supported by Daniel Jackson, Nathan Foley, skipper Chris Newman, Jordan McMahon and Joel Bowden, who finished with two final-term goals.

Mitch Morton, who has been among the few bright spots in the Tigers' miserable start to the year, also kicked a goal as the final term turned into a celebration for the long-suffering black-and-yellow fans.

BEST:
Richmond: Deledio, Jackson, Tuck, Foley, Riewoldt, Bowden, Nahas, Newman.
North Melbourne: Simpson, Swallow, Ziebell, McIntosh, Urquhart, Petrie.

INJURIES:
Richmond: Richardson (strained buttock), Collins (cut chin).
North Melbourne: Harvey (dislocated elbow), Hansen (hamstring), Firritto (rolled ankle).

Richmond back on track
Rebecca Williams | April 25, 2009 10:30pm

THE monkey is finally off the back. Battle-weary Richmond broke through for its first win of the season after rolling North Melbourne by 36 points at Etihad Stadium last night.

After last week's embarrassing loss to 2008 wooden-spooner Melbourne, which intensified the pressure on besieged coach Terry Wallace, the Tigers finally gave the yellow and black faithful reason to cheer.

The Tigers trailed at the first break but then pulled away from the Kangaroos in a spirited third quarter.

On-field general Matthew Richardson provided inspiration for his team when he returned to the field after being forced off with an injury in the second quarter.

It was a successful return for Mark Coughlan, playing his first game since Round 12, 2006, who finished with 16 disposals and five tackles in his comeback match.

Young forward Jack Riewoldt helped spark the Tigers in the second quarter with three goals and finished as the team's top scorer.

Daniel Jackson was the team's top possession winner with 33 disposals, while Joel Bowden also had plenty of the ball with 28 touches.

North's loss was compounded by an injury to captain Brent Harvey, who suffered a dislocated elbow in the first quarter.

Veteran midfielder Adam Simpson and understudy Andrew Swallow were among the best for the Roos.

The match started ominously for the Tigers, with the Kangaroos taking control early and dominating play around the stoppages to kick the first three goals of the match.

Richardson started deep in the Tigers forwardline, but it didn't take long before he was moved up the ground in a bid to spark his side.

While the play went their way, the Kangaroos were dealt a double injury blow midway through the first term.

First, Harvey left the field grimacing and supporting his left arm in his guernsey after having his arm pulled back in a tackle.

Moments later defender-turned-midfielder Michael Firrito also had to be helped off the field with an ankle injury.

But Firrito, who had started the match in the middle on comeback kid Coughlan, returned to the field for the start of the second quarter after receiving treatment.

Whether or not it was the injuries that opened the game up, the Tigers worked their way into the match with goals to captain Chris Newman and Brett Deledio leaving a one-goal difference at quarter-time.

The momentum stayed with the Tigers at the start of the second term, but they too had their injury worries when Richardson hobbled off the field with hamstring trouble.

With Richardson off, the Tigers needed someone to stand up. Enter Riewoldt.
The young forward's three second-quarter goals helped lift the Tigers to the lead and his soaring grab at half forward eight minutes into the term reflected a shift in the team's confidence.

Both teams squandered chances in front of goal, but it was the Tigers that took a seven-point lead into the main break.

Although their ball use often let them down, the Tigers, desperate for a maiden victory, continued to attack in the third quarter.

While it looked like he might have been gone for the game, Richardson, sensing a breakthrough win, hovered on the sidelines waiting to get back into the action.

He returned to the field 17 minutes into the third quarter, heading straight to full-forward.
Putting discomfort aside, Richo threw himself into the game, with one of his marking contests creating an opportunity for Andrew Collins to run into an open goal.

Moments later he and Shane Tuck launched a fierce tackle on Lachie Hansen, with Tuck goaling from the resulting free to give Richmond a 27-point lead at the last change.

The Kangaroos blew their chances to erode Richmond's lead in the final term, kicking 1.7, as Bowden, with two last-quarter goals, and Mitch Morton sealed the Tigers win.

In more good news for the Tigers, young midfielder Trent Cotchin got through his first game back from an achilles injury when he played at Box Hill yesterday afternoon.

The 18-year-old had 21 disposals (eight kicks and 13 handballs) after starting on the interchange bench.

Ruckman Troy Simmonds finished the game full of running with three goals from 23 disposals, and 27 effective hitouts.

" 'Simmo' hasn't been in the greatest of form, but his attitude was terrific and he showed some aggression in the last quarter," assistant coach Craig McRae said.

"We need him at his best in the Richmond side."

Simmonds is in the final leg of a five-year contract at Punt Rd.

Best:
Richmond: J Riewoldt B Deledio R Nahas C Newman D Jackson M White S Tuck J Bowden.
North Melbourne: A Swallow A Simpson H McIntosh G Urquhart J Ziebell.

Tigers sink Roos to open account
Martin Boulton | April 26, 2009

Between half-time and the midway point of the third term the Kangaroos kicked 1.9, while the Tigers kicked seven second-half goals and took control of the midfield.

You have to question how much of the game Martin actually saw.  They kicked 1.3 for the quarter and only 2.9 for the half!!  They only kicked 4 goals for the match after the first 10 minutes - tells the true story of the dominance we had.
