Be patient, youth takes time - Kevin Sheedy
Kevin Sheedy | May 20, 2009 10:07pm

THE worst thing Richmond could do right now is sack Terry Wallace.

Building for a premiership requires patience and time. To panic now would be catastrophic for the players, and the club.

In recent times the Tigers have started to steady it up a bit. Let's not forget that during my time in charge of Essendon they had 11 coaching changes.

You need to settle with the person who can lead you to a premiership or you end up with a washing machine - just turning it around and around.

No one has said that Wallace isn't coaching Richmond next year and nothing needs to be said until the season ends.

The Tigers might not finish in the eight but this could be the best ninth-placed finish they have ever had.

If they keep playing the kids, then they've got a future. In my premiership year at Essendon in 1993, I had 3 1/2 wins by Round 7. And I just kept playing the kids. By then I hadn't introduced Rick Olarenshaw and David Calthorpe.

If the kids play well, you just have to pick them. Coburg had a good win last weekend and some of the boys who were dropped actually played well.

Jack Riewoldt, for instance, kicked six. Coaches need pressure at the selection table.

I'm not going to tell Wallace what to do. If I were in his situation, I would play the kids and give the board an opportunity to see the list and show what a professional I was.

I truly believe Wallace has coached pretty well this year.

The scoreboard says the Tigers have just one win but any fan knows it could have been more. The side should have had away wins against Sydney and Port Adelaide.

Not many clubs beat Port in Adelaide and overall the Tigers' average losing margin is just 29 points. That's about equivalent to the eighth or ninth team.

The exception was the game against Melbourne when the players got a bit edgy and blew it in the first half.

So you might end up with a poor record when you go with youth, but it's all driven by planning for a premiership.

Fans will know by the way the Tigers select their team and, then, by the way they go about it on the field whether there's heart and spirit.

They'll know by the application and intensity if the club is going somewhere. And if the right thing is done by the coach and all the coaches at the club, and the board is loyal to them, the Tigers might end up going in the right direction.

Strength in leadership means you've got a chance.

Essendon did that with Matthew Knights last year and the Bombers are starting to get some reward now.

I'm adamant that if Essendon beats Richmond in the Dreamtime game on Saturday night, it will believe it can make the finals.

So the Tigers have got to let the Bombers have it. I'll be barracking for Richmond and I'm looking forward to seeing the kids have a go.

Wallace will be giving 110 per cent at the helm. You simply can't panic in this situation.

This can't go on - James Hird on Terry Wallace
James Hird | May 20, 2009 09:54pm

TERRY Wallace is gone, he has been gone since Round 1, but he is now officially not the coach of the Richmond Football Club.

No, hang on a minute, he still is the coach, and those of us in the media have fallen for the rumour and innuendo that follows every bit of gossip around football.

What a load of rubbish.

Something is fishy, because Victoria's senior football journalists don't get this excited over a mere rumour.

If we are to believe Richmond, Wallace was not sacked yesterday and his job as coach has never been in question.

Most of the time I believe what football clubs say. But on this occasion there is a little too much noise to totally discount what we all thought was happening yesterday morning.

This latest incident has made Terry's position untenable. Whatever happened yesterday and whatever speculation is ahead does not matter now. There is only one clear path ahead: Wallace can no longer coach Richmond and must either resign or be removed.

This goes against everything I have been taught and believed in, and my comments will disappoint my old coach Kevin Sheedy, who is all for coaches' rights.

I believe people should honour contracts, complete the task at hand and work towards the best outcome for both parties.

But what yesterday showed me is that the Richmond players are no longer in a position to concentrate on playing football.

As a player your most important obligation is to play at your best and win a game of football. When the environment is such that this cannot happen, changes need to be made.

Normally the players get a rocket, are dropped or sacked. But whatever happened in the 48 hours after the loss to Port Adelaide has put the spotlight back on to Terry.

Unfortunately, a leak of sensitive information, or a lack of clear direction that enabled the media to think Terry was gone or close to it, has changed the landscape.

No longer are we talking about a group that has won one game from eight and is focusing on the Dreamtime game. Instead we are talking about an issue that has the potential to destabilise and fracture the group.

Players, staff, coaches and board members have an obligation to keep sensitive information inside the club. When that does not happen, the damage caused can be huge.

Up until this incident I respected Richmond and Terry Wallace for sticking to their guns and doing the best by all parties. Unfortunately, should Wallace keep coaching Richmond, it will be in nobody's best interest.

Nobody doubts that Terry has a very good football brain. He has won a lot of respect as a coach and loves the game and his role in it.

This must be a shocking time, but one that he will work through and emerge from stronger.

For Richmond it is time to start the planning for 2010.

The Tigers have a lot of work to do and need to get started as soon as possible.

Re the bolded bit - never has a truer word been spoken or written. The damage done today has been huge FACT

Perhaps it coming from Jimmy Hird it will carry more weight

Does anyone really think any of the players would leak it to the Media.

I think its a senior official, it just has to be. Someone senior who is close to the reporters involved.

I have never seen this performance at any club, not even Freo. Its fair to say we have surpassed them now as the most embrrassing club in the league

daniel I don't think it is the players

But someone is leaking info and they need to go

First thing the club should do now is find, expose and get rid of the leak

He has no intention of coaching, I don't know why his name is constantly mentioned

As for the leak... it's probably Wayne Campbell

Disagree Jack - have to stop the leaks first

The leaks are doing the most damage.

Get rid of the leaks then you can actually run things without having to look over your shoulder every 15 seconds and having the media desending on Punt Road like vultures on a carcass on a 40 degree day

Of course you want the leaks to continue
What else would you have in your life if you didn't keep getting your inside info on OER?
