2009 Draft Smokeys
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:40:11 PM »
Sad that it's started so early but if I can help in anyway to our footy club I can't stress how good of a pick up this kid will be, he'll be horribly underrated I believe and is in the leadership group for Eastern Ranges, was bottom age for Metro last year and is now top age and was in the best last week. Has a beautiful long kick, and can use both shoes.

Best way to describe is Stephan Hill. His pedigree suggests he'll fill out as his dad was a decent stocky New Zealand cricketer.

Scott is #1 for Metro.

A bit early just yet for me to judge smokeys. I'll wait until I see some U18 champs games first in a month's time as some kids can shoot up the rankings into recruiters minds.

Kel's younger brother Anthony (#22 also from Eastern Ranges) will interest Tiger supporters.

I heard good wraps about Cunnington and Rohan before the Champs but they both had good games for Vic Country against Metro so they'll probably end up into the top 20 or so.

The Vic Country vs WA game at Docklands is a must see.

ROUND 4
Friday June 26
NSW/ACT vs South Australia at VISY Park 2.45pm
Saturday June 27
Victoria Country vs Northern Territory at Casey Fields 11am
Victoria Metro vs Queensland at Casey Fields 1pm
Tasmania vs Western Australia at Casey Fields 3pm

ROUND 5
Wednesday July 1
Tasmania vs NSW/ACT at Etihad Stadium 9:35am
Queensland vs Northern Territory at Etihad Stadium 11:40am
Victoria Country vs Western Australia at Etihad Stadium 1:45pm
Victoria Metro vs South Australia at Etihad Stadium 3:50pm

The extra pick at the start of the 2nd round could be really good outcome for us. I dont think this draft is as bad as people are making out and we have many holes we need to fill.

Could be difficult to manufacture 11 loses given that we will be gaining a new caretaker coach and other clubs we are playing will be trying just as hard to lose.   :pray

I hope our thinking is aligned with clubs.... :-\

MT I don't think he's Number 1 for Metro but he's definitely top 5. Tom Scully is Metro's number 1 player.

Moore will be drafted I think certainly regardless of how he goes with Kelvin's rise from not a steller junior career I think his pedigree will get him through. He certainly shows glimpses of a player that could make it at the top level. Moore and Scott both go to the same high school and are mates with Sam Blease (Melbourne pick 18) and probably tackled him when he broke his leg lol.

Matt isn't overly loud so he may go deeper in the draft then his talent woudl suggest as he doesn't stand out like some. He'll be expected to go in between 10-30 and I think we'll have a selection possibly 2, maybe 3 if we draft for it and he'd be a superb pick up. He's also played for Melbourne CC as a pretty handy all rounder I've heard. Just naturally talented and I'd be wrapped to get him.

Sorry WAT he is number 14 for Eastern Ranges.

I think we really nearly to work hard with recruiting a fine young player in the 2nd round, I think our 2nd rounders have been picked a little to early and over looked some better talent, history would suggest.

Apparently the Bombers have their eye on Jonno Nash from Sandringham Dragons. HBF and midfielder (used also a key defender in one game given he's solid body type) 188cm, 84kg who is 19 and is the bests nearly every week despite them being a bottom U18 side. He supposedly had a few injuries when he was 17 which hampered his draft chances at the time. He'd be a 3rd round or later pick so he'd be a smokey. The AFL Record interviewed him about a month ago.

Jonno Nash will be playing for Sandy's VFL side this week as their one allowed TAC Cup kid against Coburg for those going to watch the Burgers on Saturday.
