the draft is not a lottery. morons.

I don't know if the word lottery is correct, but just because you have the number 2 pick, doesn't mean you're going to get the 2nd best player in the draft.
And you may not think I care for you

That is so true.
When it is your turn to pick you might pick, what others would teams might say, that player should be pick 20.
But you picked him at number 2 because he is what is needed at your club.

Yep, and when another team's pick #4 has an instant impact and your #2 steadily improves you then get pilloried for taking the wrong player.  Or worse still, when your pick #3 turns out to be a dud then you get pilloried for not taking any of the subsequently successful picks between that one and your next.  Even when, to the best of your ability and knowledge, and within the resources limits you have to operate under, you choose who you think is the best for your list.  A lot of hindsight experts in all areas of the football world - and the best ones are usually the loudest.

Well are we still crying over Pavlich? Yes we got McMahon and oh well it didn't work but we have made many many many mistakes recruiting and this may have just been one more of them.

There is a difference with this one.

The draft is a lottery, Fiora was highly rated, Oakley-Nicholls was highly rated. They just didn't turn out.

We knew what we were getting with McMahon, he'd been around since 2000. Hopefully whoever was responsible for this trade is no longer at the club.

It was shocker of a trade on just so many levels. Even financially. We're paying someone $300k to play VFL and possibly again next year  :help compared to paying a Selwood $120k to develop while playing AFL footy. The $180k difference could have gone towards extra recruiting and development resources and personnel.

Francis Jackson was an unashamed Scott Selwood fan so that's who we missed out on. Ward wasn't on the radar. The argument for trading for McMahon was that it was draft with poor depth and the likes of a Selwood and Rance wouldn't be still available at picks 18 and 19. So not only did we stuff up doing the trade we didn't read the draft and its talent pool correctly either. Concerningly I've heard us say the same thing about this year's draft (ie. its lack of depth)  :-\.

There's nothing we can do about the McMahon trade now but you would have hoped we would've learnt our lesson  and focussed on drafting and developing our own instead. But of course even with a new football director at the helm we still overpaid and traded away a decent pick for another club's fringe player playing in a state league  :banghead.

Maybe not.

But you have a very good chance of getting the 2nd best player.

If recruiting was done at a supermarket he'd need to be kept in the soft serve section under refrigeration  :banghead

Its the same thing every year. BLAH BLAH, IF the club continues to accept mediocrity in all that they do, including recruiting, well I hate to break the bad news to you boys but we aren't gonna get it right most times......
But even if they do get it right occasionally, the player development is so poor at the moment, those up & coming, players with their careers ahead of them, will end up on the scrap heap like all the coaches that have ended up @ Richmond. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity my friends.
Money gets the best off field people to the club. We need to get them. Starting with Neil Balme.!!!
The club that keeps giving.
