RICHMOND'S top priority, besides recruiting a new coach, is to sign star midfielder Brett Deledio.

But the Tigers will need to pounce on the 22-year-old with almost every other club asking about his status at Punt Road.

"Yeah, there probably is, (a lot of clubs wanting to poach him),'' Richmond list manager Craig Cameron said.

"He wants to stay at the club. He is our best and fairest winner from last year, and we know that Brett is a required player.

"I'm not going to go into it any further than that.''

The soon-to-be-out-of-contract Deledio is set to become the AFL's next millionaire, with figures bandied around as high as half a million dollars a season.

"Brett will get what he deserves. I've started negotiations with his manager and they're on-going. But we're not going to discuss them any further than that,'' Cameron said.

An interstate club said it would be pursuing Deledio at all costs.

"He would be a far better player in a better side,'' said the recruiter, who wished to remain anonymous.

"But he would come at a cost. Probably somewhere around half a million a season.''

Deledio's salary is believed to be in the $300,000 to $350,000 a season bracket.

Deledio's manager, Anthony McConville, said negotiations had begun with Richmond but declined to elaborate.

Sooner the club finalises the contractual stuff the better off it will be in terms of supporter opinion.

with pretty well all of our > 30s retiring we will have enormous scope in the salary cap ..I would have thought our 2008 B&F winner would be elevated in the pecking order from current standings

4 weeks ago someone else from the Sunday HUN wrote (quoting Lids manager no less) that the kid wants to stay and he was talking to the Tigers.

Tony comes up with other clubs are interested in him ...gee what a surprise and then combines the 2 stories

And let's not forget that Tony hasn't had a great couple of weeks ... his name was up there on the HUN website with Robbo's on that fateful Tuesday morning  Come to think of it tony got off very lightly indeed

I thing that we should be signing him on as quick as we can.
Then the interstate teams as well as Melbourne teams will leave him alone.
And then he can get back to playing footy.
And not have to think about where he will be next year.

A caller to SEN tonight who is a Tigers man said he overheard at the game that we have resigned Lids to a new deal.

Another caller later on claimed GC17 want to make Lids their captain and will pay him $1m.
