Here's the link to Tommy's interview with KB this morning on SEN....
http://www.sportsentral.com/pro/main/Podcasts.aspxSummary* KB teased Hafey about not wearing a t-shirt yesterday at the past players function. Tommy said you need to dress for the weather and he doesn't want the flu. KB said you're no getting old are you Tommy and Hafey said yeah he may be.
* Hafey said Richo is our best player and still has a couple of years left in him not just one more. Would hate to see Richo not go on. KB said he's had injuries Tommy but Tommy said yeah but not recently until this one. He had knees and all early on in his career but since 2002 Richo hasn't missed too many games. He's played nearly 300 games which is a mighty effort and how old were you when you retired Kevin? (37 years old)
* Hafey thought we'd finish 5th/6th with Carlton at the start of the year. Disappointing. Read with interest what Sugar said yesterday about the Carlton game and the confidence of the side going. Melbourne loss was a bitter blow. Just 2 wins when Tommy thought we'd be right up there. KB asked what has gone wrong then Tommy. I know you Tommy that you don't like coaches changing halfway through a season and knocked back the job of replacing Walls midway 1995 at Brisbane. Tommy said yes I don't like coaches changing midseason. It's breaking a contract and he really hates that.
* Tommy said Malthouse or Matthews - two of the older coaches - would be the best people for the job. After that we have 100 assistant coaches who want to be coach and that's only natural. You go through the process - Buckley, Campbell, Hird - these are people who could do the job and you may never tell where they'd end.
* KB asked Tommy what attributes would Malthouse bring ... finals? Tommy said no not really although we showed last year we are capable but it hasn't worked out the way we would've wanted this year. Not sure the reason but we just don't have big enough bodies. If we had bigger targets up forward we'd do better. Malthouse has experience is a no nonsense person. Gets on with the job and isn't there to make friends. Just gets the players to play the way he wants them to play. Matthews is the same.
* Haven't thought of a culture problem at the club. The selection of coaches and players haven't panned out the way we would've liked them to be. Bringing back Richmond people is fair enough. Mick is a former premiership player. He's had success in the past and gets the best out of the players he's got. That's the most important thing - getting the best out of what you've got.
* Gamestyle? If you want to win you kick long. If you want to rack up possessions you do what everyone is doing. Someone gave him a university paper where it said the two most important things to Aussie Rules footy is kicking long and quickly into the forward line and run and carrying the footy. Tommy thought to himself I was expecting something new. I hope they sent this to the 16 AFL coaches and not just to me. You don't need to mark to kick a goal. The ball goes to ground from the bigger bodies and that's where the Daicos and KB's kick their 80-90 goals a year. You see sides now have more handballs than kicks and get beaten by 10-12 goals yet when things get desperate they start kicking long.
* You see some players run with the ball and Usain Bolt couldn't catch them yet when they need to chase they couldn't catch Humphrey Bear. I wonder if they would plod along without the desperation if they had a raging bull or lion chasing them. They'd be dead. He always thought coaches should bring along a elephant gun and bring the bludgers down in front of the crowd if they aren't chasing hard.
* He's left many times before the game ended when he never used to even if the margin was 15 goals. Maybe it's my age but I've done it numerous time. He's even turned off the tv and gone to bed at half-time because some games are embarrassing he simply couldn't watch it anymore.
* Tommy also spoke how sport is the lifeblood of country towns and keeps youth out of trouble.
