Jade Rawlings fits Richmond Tigers bill
Glenn McFarlane | June 14, 2009 11:30pm

RICHMOND stopper Daniel Jackson says the Tigers need to appoint a young coach for next season and caretaker Jade Rawlings fits the profile.

After the Tigers' 15-point win against West Coast in Rawlings' AFL coaching debut on Saturday night, Jackson said the players had tremendous faith in their new coach's method and direction heading into the second half of the year.

"I think we are really suited to having a young coach who is only recently out of the game," Jackson said.

"The psychology of players these days in being so professional means they have a good understanding of the game.

"Older coaches really know their stuff. But I think that we, as a young group, have a lot of talent and a really good base there. We need to tinker with a few things, but I really reckon we are on the right track."

Jackson, who played a key role in quelling Eagle Daniel Kerr at Etihad Stadium, heaped praise on the way Rawlings had responded since being given the senior role after the departure of Terry Wallace.

"Jade has been fantastic," Jackson said. "He has coached a lot of these players. He knows them really well and knows how to get the best out of them.

"I love playing under him. I always know where I stand, and he is just honest with everyone. I think he is going to do a fantastic job for us for the rest of the season.

"After last weekend, we felt a little bit of pressure come off. It was a new beginning kind of feel. It was really exciting at training on Friday. We took that into the game, and it paid off for us.

"Our main focuses were the team-first aspects, and the defensive mechanisms. That's what St Kilda is doing at the moment. It has made them a better side, and that's what we want to focus on."

The hard-working Tiger, who has claimed a number of important scalps this season, took another when he restricted the influence of the dangerous Kerr.

Jackson used all that he could to keep himself between Kerr and the ball, as the pair exchanged words and physical clashes throughout the night.

"I love a scrap," Jackson said. "If it means I don't have to run anywhere, then I am happy, and if it wears them out, then that is a win for me.

"As long as I don't get another wrestling fine, I will be happy.

"They (Kerr's teammates) really started to help him out in the second half, which made my job even harder and he got a few more (possessions). But I think he only had four kicks for the game and two or three came from my mates helping me out, when they gave away free kicks.

"So we were able to wear him down a bit."

Jackson praised the work of Richard Tambling and Mitch Morton, key men in the club's third win of the year.

"Richard Tambling has had his critics over the past few years, but I reckon it would hard to find a better first quarter than he had," he said.

"He had 14 touches and was an absolute golden boot. He gave off three or four (goals) from his own boot, and he may have had a hand in the other two.

"He has always had the talent, and been a hard worker, but he is starting to put that all together. I know he was pretty tired in the second half. They kept working hard with a tag on him.

"Mitch has had a few tough games, but that's what he does - he kicks goals and keeps sticking to it."

Steady on the coaching appointments Big Guy. Lets not let player and/or fan sentiment get in the way of this appointment.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Rawlings strikes right chord in first week
Samantha Lane | June 15, 2009

JADE Rawlings has already distinguished himself as a man with methods and messages that resonate, which has convinced one emerging leader at Richmond that a young coach, rather than an experienced sage, is the best fit at Tigerland.

"My personal preference and opinion is for a younger coach," Daniel Jackson, a member of the club's junior leadership group, said yesterday.

"The style of just being harsh on guys all the time, I think, has probably nearly done its dash. Of course guys need sprays, you can't just be nice and baby guys through, but at the same time, I think you just need a really honest approach. And that's what Jade has. Guys always know where they stand with him.

"He'll come and he'll tell you at half-time, 'You did this poorly, or this poorly', or he'll tell you after the game that 'this was good and this was bad', so you're never in the dark as to where you stand."

Rawlings' first big statement was to cut five senior regulars, including dual best-and-fairest winner Joel Bowden, Troy Simmonds and Mark Coughlan, for Saturday night's match against the West Coast Eagles, which came seven days after he was appointed to the caretaker role.

After the match, Rawlings also detailed a couple of stuff, mid-match discussions he had with Ben Cousins and Jack Riewoldt.

"If a player is to be dropped, he'd know exactly why and what he needed to work on when he goes back, which I think is probably the absolute key relation between a player and coach that makes a big difference," Jackson said yesterday.

"That's just my personal opinion, I hope that's the way they go (young coach over veteran). But at the same time, those senior coaches who have been there through the eras and have had the success, obviously they have a lot to bring as well."

In his first meaningful meeting with the playing group last Monday, Rawlings said he had no plans to overhaul Terry Wallace's game plan in half a season, but pushed key messages relating to mindset.

"He said that he thought the main things that we needed to tinker with were the team-first aspects and attitudes — just putting others in front of your own interests. And then working on those defensive mechanisms," Jackson said.

On Friday, Cousins addressed the midfield group to stress the importance of team-minded play.

"He said, 'I hope I don't sound like I'm preaching to you, but this is just what I think'," Jackson said.

"It was just the way he sort of said it. You could see that it meant a lot to him … the way he lives his life is the way he plays his footy … and the guys took a lot from it and I think it will make a big difference if we do those things."

Kevin Sheedy, who holds a membership and marketing position at Punt Road, has refused an invitation to join the subcommittee that Richmond is assembling to select its new coach.

And let's not get "seduced" by people's names or what the media thinks either.

This appointment is actually very simple, it must be the best person for the RFC, working out who it is the tough bit  :thumbsup

Heard Daniel speak yesterday, very impressive.  Hardly any cliches, just a good interview.
Not sure about Rawlings though, but I guess he's not going to come out and say he's not worthy

again our club needs to learn how to keep quiet.

it is not the president or players job to openly discuss our next coach on any public forum. Keep it in house people.

they will never learn to just STFU

Easier said than done unless our players go into media lockdown or just answer questions with "No Comment"
Players are also required under the media agreements to be made available to the media

Do you really think the players front up for interview without the club having prior knowledge of the questions that are going to be asked? It is all a really well rehearsed drill!
