Former coach Terry Wallace slams Richmond's 'power-based' culture
By Jackie Epstein
June 21, 2009
Former Richmond coach Terry Wallace says the club's power-based culture was the worst he had seen in his time in Australian football.
Wallace said a strong person needed to be appointed to cope with the pressure. He also blamed the intense media scrutiny and injuries for contributing to his demise.
"I've been to three clubs and it's a club more than any other club which works on power base - all the time," Wallace said on SEN on Saturday.
"I've been there twice now (and) I've never seen this club really all come together and say, 'we're going to work in harmony together'.
"Whether it's a corporate area, whether it's a past players area, whether it's a board area, whether it's a management area, there's always somebody working for the power base at the club.
"I think that the club still needs somebody who is either unbelievably strong in personality or of senior nature. Obviously you've got your Nathan Buckley types who we know are a very, very strong character and senior coaches who have been a part of it.
"To get a young coach in there who is not strong enough ... and (with) Jade (Rawlings) we'll find out in the next 11 weeks."
Wallace said not being able to field his best side from round one had hurt the club.
"Not having the midfield we wanted up to speed at the start of the season killed us," Wallace said.
