Coburg Tigers beaten by 45 points in VFLAdrian Ballantyne | June 20, 2009 04:30pm
RICHMOND'S axed veterans were on the end of an embarrassing loss after suiting up for the Tigers' VFL side this afternoon.
Senior players Joel Bowden, Mark Coughlan and Jordan McMahon were all part of the Coburg Tigers’ 45-point loss, while other AFL regulars Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Jake King and Jay Schulz also played.
Most were dropped from Richmond's senior side after coach Terry Wallace stepped down a fortnight ago and interim replacement Jade Rawlings opted for youth over experience.
Coburg were never really in the game despite the importance of the match, with both sides locked in a seven-way battle for second, third and fourth spots on the ladder.
Port will now leapfrog Coburg into fourth after winning 18.14 (122) to 12.5 (77) at TEAC Oval.
The Tigers kicked just one goal in the opening term and trailed by 19 points at the first break.
Port’s forwards were well on top in the second quarter, piling on six goals to three
to open up a 38-point lead.
Coburg kept its chances of an unlikely win alive, matching the home side’s three goals in the third quarter, but a Port goal inside the first 30 seconds of the final term snuffed out any chance of a comeback.
Most of Richmond's dumped players had games to forget.
Oakley-Nicholl's kicking let him down repeatedly, though King showed glimpses of the form that had him touted as one of the Tigers' great finds last year and Bowden was solid down back.
