Rawlings says Richo can go on
By Jennifer Witham  Tue 28 July, 2009

RICHMOND coach Jade Rawlings thinks veteran forward Matthew Richardson has the ability to play into an 18th season next year.

Richardson, 34, is expected to return from the hamstring strain he sustained in round six this weekend, either in the VFL or the senior side.

Rawlings said Richardson, who is the oldest player in League, had proven throughout his recovery from his injury that he was capable of playing another season.

"He's been excellent in his rehab, and he's an iconic person around the footy club and within the competition," Rawlings told radion station SEN on Tuesday morning.

"He has to be aware of what we're trying to achieve as a team ... If he can embrace that and take it on board, he'll fit in no problem.

"My stance would be – based on the last four or five weeks, him showing that his body can stand up and make change in his own game – then I can't see why not."

However, Rawlings said the club was preparing for life after Richardson, with the recruitment of another big forward high on its agenda.

He also said the emergence of the Tigers' next No.1 ruckman was important to the side's structure.

"Richo is going to be back pretty soon, but as far as the future, how much longer he can play for, nobody knows," he said.

"Also just the ruck stocks and who's going to be the next person. We think [Tyrone] Vickery is going to be a good player, we've been getting a lot of games into [Angus] Graham, and he's got a bit tired and has been battling illness for a few weeks.

"We've got Andrew Browne on our list as well, and Adam Pattison and
Troy Simmonds, who is nearing the end of his career."

Rawlings said the club has strong depth in quality midfielders, and reiterated his belief that 31-year-old Ben Cousins should play on next year.

".... make the change in his own game ...."

Is Jade putting pressure on Richo to chase, tackle, do the 1%'s et all.  Will he have to show that to get back into the ones?

Jade Rawlings' advice for Matthew Richardson
MX
July 28, 2009 02:02pm

JADE Rawlings has told Matthew Richardson he'll have to make changes to his behaviour if he's to stay on at the Tigers next season.

Rawlings had words with his brother-in-law about his onfield antics and says there are conditions to Richardson playing on

"If he can adapt to the changes we’re making, if he can embrace that and take it on board he’ll fit in no problem," Rawlings said on radio station SEN this morning.

"It’s going to be difficult (for him), we had a good conversation the other day about (how) he’s got his certain ways, which draws a lot of attention, which a lot of people love but at the same time he has to be aware of what we’re trying to achieve as a team."

Richardson has almost recovered from a serious hamstring injury and Rawlings backed the 34-year-old’s body to make it through another season.

The caretaker coach said the club's most immediate need was another tall forward.

"If it was immediate, it would be another power forward. Richo will be back pretty soon, but how much longer he can go for, nobody knows."

Richardson is expected to make his return to the field this weekend.

It will, Post is proving to be more than capable around the ground, looks to be a better kick than Richo too. Has the heart too, but prob not the tank.

So where do you play Richo, can't have him at FF, would ruin things for JackR the same way he did to Sarge. We are already trying to develop Vickery and Post in the middle. He would get in their way too. In the middle, I can only see him as a back up to Post when he gets tired. Or can he do a Tarrant and reinvent himself as a key FB, with the occasional spurt in the middle, Silvestors spot is the only big man spot up for grabs atm.
Experience is a good school. But the fees are high.

maybe:

HF: Richo Post Collins
FF: Morton Reiwoldt Nahas

ruck - Vickery / Tambling / Cotchin / Deledio / Cousins

Graham 2nd ruck

However it pans out it will be good to watch Cousins + Richo in the same team as our youngsters 2010.

hmm, comes on a bit strong, hope richo took it in the right spirit, thought a modern great of the club would be held in a little more reverance than to talk of him like some prick of a kid being dropped off at child care :o

Just being brutally honest bojangles. If someone had of got into his ear early in his career he would have been unstoppable. Rawlings has ignored reputations and told the players plain and clear what they need to improve if they want to be part of our team. Very impressive and making sure everyone on the list understands it is not personal but rather about ensuring the team and game plan comes first.

I'm starting to warm to Jade  :thumbsup

Play him on the left forward flank, you want him on that side of the ground so the natural hook on his kick will work better for him on that side of the ground. It allows him to still be dangerous up forward, push up the ground if needed yet let keep him out of the way of the young kpps.
