Theme tunes, if the AFL was a musical
Nathan Brown | August 2, 2009
NOBODY likes to admit they are getting old, but in football terms anyone over 30 is considered a veteran, whereas in normal society 30-year-olds are considered in the prime of their lives, energetic, on the pulse of modern society.
Some guys have remarked that they were five years old when I started playing AFL football.
We all like to feel young, but nothing makes you feel older quite like the musical interests of the different generations. We have music on in the gym and the battle for what is played when we are doing weights is remarkable.
Most of the young guys like to pump iron to the techno beats. Matthew Richardson (34) and myself (31) are the oldest players at the club and we were listening to Iggy Pop a few weeks back when Nathan Foley (23) asked if Iggy Pop was a genre of music. When the great Australian singer songwriter Paul Kelly was on Alex Rance (19) asked who he was, adding "Didnt he play for Sydney? One player, who shall remain nameless for obvious reasons, had never heard of The Rolling Stones.
I often make up a soundtrack for my life 12 songs that would be in the movie of your life. So I thought about a soundtrack for where the AFL teams are at the moment and came up with the following.
St Kilda Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Pat Benatar
Everyone has had their best shot at St Kilda this year and failed.
Geelong Keep Rollin, Linkin Park
Geelong just keep rollin along, having won 50 of 55 matches, despite one-point and two-point margins.
Western Bulldogs Wild Wild West, Escape Club
The Dogs love a shootout and when they run and carry and take sides on, they are very hard to beat.
Collingwood The Two Of Us, The Beatles
Nathan Buckley and Mick Malthouse might be the strongest coaching partnership in history.
Adelaide Wont Back Down, Tom Petty
Every year Adelaide gets written off, and every year Neil Craig coaches them to perfection.
Brisbane Lions Big Bad John, Johnny Cash
Jonathan Brown is just about the best player going around and when he fires, the Lions are a chance September.
Carlton Up Where We Belong, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
The Blues look like contesting finals for the first time in eight years.
Essendon Run Run Run, The Velvet Underground
When the Bombers get their run going, no one can match them.
Hawthorn Dont Look Back In Anger, Oasis
The Hawks were being written off, but have proven that they can make it to September.
Port Adelaide Up and Down, Vengaboys
The Power have been up and down like a yoyo all year but are still a big chance to make the eight.
Sydney Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Neil Sedaka
After the break-up with former skipper Barry Hall, the Swans will be looking to rebuild with some talented young forwards.
Richmond Changes, David Bowie
The Tigers have had some recent changes in the coaching box, an ex-captain has retired and a new more defensive game plan has emerged.
North Melbourne Street Fighting Man, The Rolling Stones
The Kangaroos have had a tough year, but even when they lose they tend to be competitive.
West Coast After The Thrill Is Gone, The Eagles
After the thrill of the premiership and the defections of Ben Cousins and Chris Judd, the Eagles are looking for big thrills from Nic Natanui.
Fremantle Close But No Cigar, Weird Al Yankovic
The Dockers always seem to push sides and be leading deep into the final term only to be close but no cigar.
Melbourne Movin On Up, The Jeffersons
With good recruiting of talented players and the possibility of the No. 1 pick this year, the Demons should be movin on up in coming seasons.
