Richmond, Carlton may lose round 1 season opener in 2010

The Bombers wants to play the Swans in Sydney 5 days before we play the Blues on Thursday night March 25.

Bombers fire in battle for Sydney
Caroline Wilson | August 7, 2009

A STAND-ALONE game in Sydney to open the 2010 season, five days ahead of the next game in the opening round, is the latest proposal being looked at by the AFL as it searches for new weaponry in the battle against rugby league.

The round-one clash to be played at ANZ Stadium, which would come hot on the heels of the NAB Cup grand final, is the brainchild of Essendon, which has put forward the idea as part of its 2010 fixturing submission.

The round-one clash would take place on Saturday night, March 20, five days before the now-customary season-opener at the MCG, contested over the past two seasons by Richmond and Carlton. Those two clubs have again proposed to play each other in round one on the Thursday night.

Best of luck to them.

They need it in the Sydney market.

Hardly a brainstorm by Essendon. They've been playing an annual final preseason game up there in recent years anyway. All they are suggesting now is make the game a H/A game instead.

Whatever happens I hope we do play Carlton on the Thursday night again. Without the overinflated build-up on our part this time around it'll be time for some revenge.

Nup. The draw isn't released until October/November. All clubs put in their wishlist now to the AFL and both us and Carlton have requested we play each on Thursday night in round 1 again.

The whole draw needs a overhaul, Typical for some greedy clubs like Essendon & Collingwood

Personally, I have a nervous twitch as a permanent reminder of our opening game this year.
Not sure I want to experience that again
WGAF who plays the opening game.
We'll still get a good turnout v Blues

Surprise surprise it just so happens to be their turn for a home game in round 1  ::). Screw 'em and hopefully we'll get a bigger crowd to the rematch later on in the season next year and more importantly wins in both games to stick it up 'em.

We shouldnt be afraid of this. As long as the home club alternates from year to year then thats fair. We will come good in the next 2 or 3 years under Hardwick (is this when I put in a  ;)) even though I have no new information  ;D
