Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls's time for a change?
Jay Clark | August 09, 2009

JARRAD Oakley-Nicholls's Richmond mentor, Phil Egan, insists a bright future awaits the young Tiger at another club next season.

Egan fears the 21-year-old will be one of "eight to 12" Richmond players axed in October due to a lack of senior opportunities to prove himself.

Oakley-Nicholls, Richmond's first selection in the 2005 national draft, has played only 13 games in four years and is today slated to line up for Coburg's reserves.

But Egan, who played 125 games for Richmond and Melbourne, was adamant the speedy flanker had enormous potential.

He said with more support, and more time running out of a defensive position, Oakley-Nicholls could lead a "David Rodan-like" revival next season.

"He's played almost every game as a forward but, to me, he is a tall, creative, quick half-back or winger that's where he played all his junior footy and that is what he was recruited as," Egan said.

"He has often played in the dead pocket up forward and even then he is hardly given much time on the ground.

"I don't think the kid has had much of a chance. David Rodan was similar he didn't get much of an opportunity at Richmond but since moving to Port Adelaide he has blossomed under Mark Williams."

Oakley-Nicholls has not played a senior game under interim coach Jade Rawlings and is likely to be dumped as part of a major list overhaul at the end of the season.

Phil, JON was tried forward because when he's been played behind the ball he would turn it over all the time with his dodgy kicking technique and poor decision making. He's one of the friendliest players you'll ever meet but he just can't play AFL footy. How people (not just at Richmond) saw JON as a top 10 pick gawd knows. We've never seen this "speedy flanker" except one time in his debut dreamtime game kicking that winning point. He's got good hands and has athleticism but that's about it. Just too many flaws in his game. He must to have looked to have that "X-factor" in highlights tapes yet was never seen actually playing footy live to be judged that highly. Back in 2005 a number of recruiters were in love with athletes over natural footballers. Given his good hands JON probably should have been directed towards playing basketball instead of footy as a youngster.

Time for the Club to accept the 2005 National draft was a write off due to stuff all recruiting resources and bad choices and just move on making sure poor drafts like that never happen again.

Thanks Phil for doing your best to get us a pick for him but no one would be that dumb.

Apparently he was really good at mowing lawns too, and that really caught Greg Miller's eye.

I see something in JON - We shouldn't/will not keep him, but I just wonder on this kid.
Fire away and I'll get back to you down the track :shh

what you see is a nice guy who CANNOT play afl football.

A serviceable VFL player at best.

we have been nurturing his type for the last 10 years and now its time to rid our club of these useless footballers

Dempsey from Essendon looks very similar to JON but is obviously better (although can't kick).
Anyway, JON is gone, can't see another team picking him up.

We were in debt at the time and Miller thought he could save the club some money on greenkeeping fees at Punt Rd. He thought it was a win win at the time.

Don't shoot the messenger but Caro when talking today about JON being one of those getting the flick replied there's talk some at the club believe he's struggled because he was played too early.
