Rawlings said the problems were "all mental" with his players and dangerously contagious.

"When one or two of them can't fight through it, it leads to four or five. The next thing, it infiltrates through the team," he said.

"We didn't have enough people prepared to challenge the course of the game and try to do something to change it.
Change begins on the training track and with our recruiting. Whoever becomes coach needs to strip things back to the bare basics and drill the whole list until it bores the brains out of them. It'd also help if the Club didn't trade for other club's recycled garbage who aren't up to it.

The new coach has to drill into the side how we structure up, where they need to be for basic plays, where they should run to, how they should link up, etc. Get out there and show them if they aren't doing it. Because too often when under pressure they slowly crumble and turn into a clueless rabble. There was no run today. Just Richmond players minding space deludingly expecting the ballcarrier to pinpoint a miraculous pass to them. Why does this happen coach? Where's the supposed leadership group on the ground to stand up and a lead by example? Is it a fault with the gameplan? If not what is the punishment for players who fail to follow the gameplan?

Our kick-ins are a nightmare. We're the only club that still plays under the old rule instead of playing on quickly as so as the ball goes through the points and clearing the defensive 50 zone. 50/50 bombs from the defensive goalsquare to the opposition ruckman is dumb footy. Talk about gifting possession to the opposition near their goal ::).

Switch of play is another mess. Too slow in deciding to switch when down the line to congested and then when our defenders finally switch to the fat side they look up and there's no one up field because our lazy mids are still walking and standing around on the thin side waving their hands in the air  ::). Watch next week the difference between us and Collingwood on the switch. They are lightning on the switch as soon as they gain possession in the backline which sets up scoring counterattacks for them.

Demand as close to game intensity (and pressure) as possible at training rather than it being a sloppy Sunday kick in the park. Drag or drop any player who holds onto the ball for ages and allows the opposition to flood back when there were options ahead open. Being "safe" is selfish.

Demand precise skills. Make a mistake then do they do it again and again and again until they never get it wrong. The team can't be relied on performing consistently a straightforward 25m pass to a teammate under no physical pressure for gawds sake. We kill ourselves with our basic schoolboy turnovers. Even in circle work players should be told off if kicks aren't to the receiver's advantage or the receiver has to stop and prop. Strong footskills and a solid technique that holds up under pressure should be at the top of a recruiters list for new draftees. It's difficult to improve kicking by more than 5% once a player comes into the AFL system. Slow lollypop up and unders don't cut it.

Jade you're right about the players being lazy, weak and only deciding to work when they feel like it. But while we sign-up and keep hold onto overrated substandard footballers for far too long because we don't turnover the list fast enough with too few picks and don't replace them with talented footballers then there's no pressure on the playing list to alter the lazy culture.

Next year the Club as a whole has to forget about wishfully thinking about finals and treat 2010 as a developmental year.

Where has Luke Ball played his footy this year and where has Deledio?

Where are the Saints on the ladder ?????

We have the same cultural problem we've had for 30 years. Easy to drop Tuck (who gives a poo), but too guteless to do the same to Deledio (who doesnt).

Jade Rawlings slams Tigers' losing frame of mind (Herald-Sun)

Jade Rawlings slams Tigers' losing frame of mind
Bruce Matthews | August 10, 2009

CARETAKER coach Jade Rawlings declared after yesterday's 55-point loss that Richmond was burdened by a long-standing losing culture.

A brutally honest Rawlings lashed his players for being selfish and unwilling to help teammates in a challenge.

"People have been talking about cultural issues at Richmond for a long time, however long they think it has been going on," he said.

"But, unfortunately, our players go back to habits which are bad reflections on them because, when it gets tough, they can't fight through it, to do something to try and help a mate.

"If it's not working out for them individually, they can still have an involvement, still bring something to the table and have an impact on the team."

Rawlings' solution to eradicate the Tigers' inferior culture was "a lot of hard work" after he watched his team succumb to Sydney at the MCG.

"You can't boil the ocean, unfortunately, but there's a lot of change needed to be made and I think over the last seven weeks we've been able to tap into that change," he said.

"But today was a big step backwards, so we'll go back to the drawing board and keep going back to things that we've been preaching that we want to see them improving. But it takes a while.

"It's how you review, to be able to look teammates in the eye and assess how they performed, and how they performed against the plans we had in place and what we stand for as a footy club."

Rawlings was appalled by Richmond's response to Ben Cousins' 250th game, which he said contrasted sharply with the Swans' pledge to honour Michael O'Loughlin's 300th.

"I couldn't have been more disappointed with the group. To have a challenge put to them and to be able to show very little, if any resistance to it," he said.

"Their (Swans) discipline just totally wiped us off the park.

"It's all mental. Players who get challenged the way they did today at certain stages and go back to old habits where they just can't fight through it.

"And when one or two can't fight through it, that leads to four or five. Next thing it infiltrates through the team and we didn't have enough people prepared to challenge the course of the game and try and do sometime to change it.

"I thought the signs were pretty alarming early, and the second quarter we just allowed some very simple goals that shouldn't be allowed in AFL footy. We'll sum it up at selection this week, look at people who need to go back (to the VFL).

"Go and rediscover their form or go and work on an area of their game that we've identified is poor.

"Who comes in? We'll make those calls at selection, but it's more about today, how people offered their spot in the side back to us because of how they performed."

Well said.

If they do a training drill, and mess it up, do it again and again and again till it's done right. Even if it takes all night.

I don't know why people are saying bye to Jade...

I have faith in the process, if at the end of it, he is selected ...great.

What i do like about Jade is his honesty...he and the coaching staff were not happy last week and are seething this week.

He didnt spin the loss, didnt blame players on the sidelines...just laid it on the line...we are selfish and dont play for each other...we dont know what we are getting from the players on a week to week basis.

As for Tuck sitting in the stands, i have no problem with this.  He need to fix some defensive aspects to his game and thats why he was demoted to Coburg....as Rawlings said...some players gave their spots in the team back to the match committee today...they no doubt will be dropped.

Selfless play doesnt happen in a week...this will take time to become ingrained in our players heads...

Good on Jade for having the guts to say it....

The club has a process in place....whoever that person is, I will be happy with...if that is Jade...great..if it is Hardwick as some on here are pushing for...great too....I am not wedded to one candidate.

Swans gave Tigers lesson: King (RFC)

Swans gave Tigers lesson: King
richmondfc.com.au
By Jennifer Witham  Mon 10 August, 2009

RICHMOND midfielder Jake King says the Tigers are determined to become an experienced and professional unit like the Sydney Swans, after receiving a lesson in team-orientated football on Sunday.

King, 25, agreed with coach Jade Rawlings' summation that the main difference between the two sides in their 55-point loss was the Swans' determination to play together as a team.

King said the Tigers were doing all they could to ensure that side of their game developed as their young list becomes more experienced.

"The Swans played for each other and as a team, and each individual has a role and sticks to it," King said after the game.

"No matter how many good players you've got in the side, if you've got a side that sticks together, it's always going to win.

"I think our boys are just a bit young and lacking some experience under pressure when the game is pretty much there to be won.

"We play for each other, and I don't think anyone means to do the wrong thing, it's just that everyone is still learning and we've still got a little way to go.

"There are positive signs. The boys do stick together off the field and try to get around, because we like to put it all behind us as soon as we can so we can focus on it the following week."

Rawlings questioned the Tigers' culture after the game, and said the problem rested with a lack of consistent effort when confronted with challenges.

King said while the players were aware of the problem, he found it hard to question his teammates' dedication to each other.

"I get along with each and every one of these boys really well, and I don't have a problem with anyone of them that walks the field on any day," he said.

"I know they're going to look me in the eye and do everything for me, and I'll do anything for them.

"It's just we haven't had an answer for this for the past five or six years, so I don't think it's going to be something we can fix quickly.

"It's just something we need to work on."

give me a stuffin break

for once can they just do not think.

all i hear is yap yap yap problem this play for each other that. i watch games closely and if you think its okay for one of your teammates not to help you shepherd off an opponent then stuff me dead we are stuffed as a football club.

talk is cheap at Punt Road. Proof is in the tackle count and the stats dont lie.

you can commennt as much as you like and that goes for the whole side but unless we start attacking, tackling shepherding i will always read these articles and comments and  :banghead
