Cheats faking a whiz

ATHLETES have been using fake penises and other prosthetic devices to try to fool drug testers, including at the Athens Olympics.
David Hornman, director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency, yesterday displayed one of the devices he believes was used by a member of the Hungarian team in Athens.
It consists of a plug that is inserted in the rectum, a small reservoir for "clean" urine, and a tube that is attached to the underside of the penis.
Some of the other devices are rather more lurid, including the Whizzinator, which is available on the Internet for $200.
It consists of a fake penis mounted on an athletic support. At the press of a concealed trigger, it will deliver a stream of "clean" urine pre-stored in a small reservoir.
The artificial penis comes in only one size, regular, but a range of colours, including white, tan, Latino, brown and black and yellow and black. “There are no knobs on these guys – they are quite smart” said Hornman.
"What it emphasises is the need for us to have very well-trained doping control officers," Hornman said. They can’t be slack or drooping around when these things are in use.
Experienced and erect drug testers would have no trouble spotting such devices.
Four “clean-skin” teams from WADA and the Australian Sports Drug Agency are in Sydney this week conducting training workshops for drug testers from the Oceania region.
Hornman said urine testing was still the best way to detect drug cheats, despite the drawbacks.
“On average we catch half the mongrels at their first attempt and we are trying to get it up to more than half”, said Hornman.
