RICHMOND STAR IN DOUBT FOR ROUND 1 AFTER HAMSTRING SETBACK

Sam Edmund
SEN
19 February 2021

RICHMOND star Dion Prestia looks set to miss the start of the season after suffering a hamstring injury.

Prestia is expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks with the soft tissue strain, making him an unlikely starter for the Tigers’ AFL season-opener next month.

Richmond is set to unfurl two premiership flags against Carlton at the MCG on March 18 in a match likely to be the first in Melbourne with fans since the 2019 Grand Final.

While many sides have been hit by injuries in a condensed pre-season, the Tigers had enjoyed a charmed run over summer.

But Damien Hardwick and co. will most likely have to make do without Prestia – the club’s 2019 best and fairest winner - for the season start.

It’s a frustrating setback for Prestia, whose 2019 campaign was hit by a syndesmosis injury that sidelined him for three months.

Yet he returned for Richmond’s finals campaign, playing all four finals and kicking two goals in the Grand Final against Geelong to claim his third premiership medal.

A medial hammy seems unusual. That's the inner thigh rather than the typical back of the thigh hammy.

There appears to be a fair few injuries across the clubs this preseason. Wonder if it's due to the extra training loads given games are returning to the normal length this year and player's bodies aren't yet use to it.

Prestia returned from ankle surgery last year and complications to feature in the club's back-to-back flag win but has had an interrupted pre-season, with a recent hamstring injury ruling him out of Richmond's lead-in games.

"Dion's had a bit of a stagnated period. He's probable at this stage for round one. He probably won't play any of our practice matches at this stage just to make sure he does get right," Hardwick said.

"He's got some tightness in the medial hamstring, which is not severe. We're not overly worried about it, we just have to manage that along the way."

Of the hamstring strain he incurred late last week, Prestia said: "It is just a little hamstring – it is in a good spot if you are going to do a hamstring.

"I'll be good for round one, it is just a little hiccup. The pre-season was really good until that, but this happens."

Your club's underrated performance: Round 2

Richmond – Dion Prestia

The man affectionately known as the ‘Human Meatball’ did struggle in the pre-season with a hamstring injury but he is getting back to his best form.

A winner of a best and fairest during the premiership year in 2019, with Dustin Martin mostly taking up the media’s attention, even on Sunday afternoon, Prestia topped the Tigers’ disposal count with 29.

He had a handful of inside 50s, took four marks and laid four tackles and for someone who isn’t known as an elite ball user, he went at 82 per cent and was fantastic.

'Prestia's done a hammy. It’s too early to say but he didn’t finish the game so there’s a fair chance he’ll miss multiple weeks moving forward.

We did miss Dion as he is one of the best transitional mids in the game but Sydney showed us up in the area of the game. They worked incredibly hard. We know their contest to contest work is strong. The players they've brought into the side only increases that. They've got a really good mix and are playing a really good brand of footy at this stage'.

Dion Prestia is also set for three to four weeks on the sidelines after scans revealed the Tigers onballer suffered a typical hamstring strain in Saturday’s loss.

Prestia had been nursing a hamstring strain but suffered the calf setback last week.

"He had a bit of calf tightness last week so just as we thought we were getting him back he's had that so how far that puts him back we're not too sure, but he won't play next week," Hardwick said.

Yes we really are. I think we would have beaten Port if he was playing.

His injuries have always been a concern but personally I can see this crippling his career. Maybe 15 games/year for him at best.
