From Peter Burge's injury update:

Dion Prestia, concussion

"Dion's progressing well. He obviously pulled up not 100 per cent the day after the game, and the doctor has assessed him and he's now going into that 12-day concussion protocol, which is quite progressive. So, we're preparing him for the Gold Coast game next week. He'll move into some lighter exercise during the rest of this week and then progress into some non-contact training early next week. By the end of that week, we'll be able to move into that final stage of contact hopefully leading into the Gold Coast game. We feel pretty confident that he'll be right to play in that game in a fortnight."

Jack Riewoldt on AFL360 last night said he repeatedly asked the umpires to stop the game but they just ignored him.

‘Really didn’t like that’: Tigers gun recounts ‘stop the game’ pleas after star teammate’s concussion

Richmond star Jack Riewoldt believes play should’ve been stopped more quickly in the aftermath of Dion Prestia’s concussion during Saturday’s blockbuster against Geelong.

As medical staff convened around Prestia, play continued to resume, with the Fox Footy commentary team baffled at the continuation, which eventually resulted in a goal to Cats forward Tyson Stengle.

“I was screaming at the umpires, I think there was probably a few of us saying ‘stop the game’ because clearly he was knocked out,” Riewoldt said on AFL 360.

“I’m a bit flat about the minute-and-a-half of play after this; there were multiple times to stop the game. Blokes are kicking the ball over the top of him and the doctors. I thought that could’ve been handled a lot better.

“It’s the duty of care ... you’ve got three medical people looking over a player that’s knocked out in the vicinity of play in the protected zone - it could’ve nearly been 50 metres, he was in the protected zone - and we continued to play that game.

“From a safety point of view I really didn’t like that.”

Well said Jack. It was disgraceful and ridiculous umpiring. A safety risk as well as blatantly unfair to have one team a man down for so long that it gifts the perpetrator's side a bonus goal in a game decided by less than a kick  :thumbsdown.

AFL dodges response over ‘ridiculous’ Dion Prestia moment slammed by Richmond legend Matthew Richardson

League headquarter has chosen to let slide a bizarre passage of play that has AFL greats furious.

Harrison Reid

The AFL has refused to comment whether play should have been stopped while Dion Prestia was dazed and concussed on the ground during the Tigers’ thriller with the Cats on Saturday.

Tom Stewart was sent directly to the tribunal for a sickening hit that floored Prestia and has accepted his four-game ban.

While Prestia is believed to be recovering well, he was in serious trouble immediately after the hit and struggled to find his feet as trainers rushed in.

The footage that followed was hard to watch as the umpires made the bizarre decision to let play continue around Prestia, who was seeing stars.

When asked by 7NEWS.com.au why play wasn’t stopped, or if it was the correct decision to let play continue, an AFL spokesperson said the league was choosing not to comment.

Richmond legend Matthew Richardson told 7NEWS.com.au he couldn’t believe that play wasn’t stopped in the extreme circumstances.

“That was just ridiculous,” he said.

“Let’s be honest here, how can you have play going on when a player is distressed on the ground like that? We’ve got to have some common sense there – mainly for Dion Prestia and his health and well-being.”

The umpires’ first opportunity to stop play came just seconds after the hit, with Jack Graham being awarded a free kick just metres from Prestia.

But play wasn’t stopped and the ball went over Prestia’s head twice as subsequent opportunities to stop play came when marks were taken by Dylan Grimes and Tom Hawkins, all within kicking distance of Prestia who was yet to find his feet.

Ricahrdson said the risk to Prestia’s safety was clearly the main concern, but another element was the almost two minutes during which Geelong had one extra active player on the ground - from the moment Prestia was hit to when Cats forward Tyson Stengle made the Tigers pay with a crucial goal.

“It penalised Richmond,” Richardson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“They were playing 17 on 18 for what felt like a couple of minutes, and Tyson Stengle kicks a goal while Prestia’s lying on the ground.

“Play had to be stopped there – that’s just ridiculous that Richmond could be penalised like that.

“If we can’t have a game where the umpire can blow the whistle and say, ‘We have to stop the game’ when the ball is still near a guy in the state that Prestia was in – there is no common sense in that.”

What problem does Dion have with common sense?  Or rather, the other way around ...  common sense seems to have a massive problem with Dion!
Firstly, Dion is denied a chance to kick the winning goal because common sense said that the Swans can kick the ball into the crowd after the siren even though Dion had been awarded a free kick on the wing.  Common sense seems to have had the last laugh that day.
Then secondly, Dion is knocked senseless by a 'nice guy' running past the ball.  But common sense pops in to convince the umpire there was nothing to see here, no free kick paid & while Dion is struggling to stand up the umpire thought it was common sense to let the game go on, even though the ball landed next to the semi-conscious Dion.  Even when the ball was kicked over Dion's spinning head common sense flapped his hands & called 'play on'!  Common sense even waited patiently for Geelong to kick a goal before letting Dion stagger off the ground!

Now Dion, if you ever want to cross the road be really careful, ok.  Out there somewhere is a truck with a rego plate that says COMMON SENSE!  Or a tram (streetcar) named COMMON SENSE.  Either way, its odds on they are gunning for you!       :o
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!  Loud, proud & dangerous!

From Barrett's Sliding Doors column:

IF ...
the matches missed by Dion Prestia due to the Tom Stewart hit cause him to fall short of winning a second Tigers' best and fairest award ...

THEN ...
that lost status and money (there are always contractual cash incentives attached to winning such awards) will be added to the toll of that very heavy concussion.

Just how important is Dion Prestia to Richmond? (ZH)

Just how important is Dion Prestia to Richmond?

Much has been said of Tom Stewart’s upcoming absence, but the Tigers will lose an equally important part of their system.

Anthony Talliopoulos
zerohanger.com

Dion Prestia's gruesome concussion in the Tigers' clash against the Cats on Saturday has been greatly publicised over the past week.

As a result of his head-high bump on Prestia, superstar defender Tom Stewart was given a four-week suspension.

Since the bump, there has been much speculation about what would have occurred if he had decided not to bump.

Would Tyson Stengle have kicked the goal immediately after in a game decided by under a goal? Would Prestia have made the difference in the game? Did that game cost Richmond a top-four spot?

Unfortunately for such questions, we will never be able to truly know what would have happened in the game as there are literally thousands of moments that make up all four quarters.

For all we know, one little tap in the middle of the game made all the difference in the match.

However, one thing that is more quantifiable is what sort of impact Dion Prestia has on a game of football.

Since arriving at the club in 2017, the man they call the 'human meatball' has gone on to win three premierships and a Jack Dyer Medal for the Tigers.

DION PRESTIA
Midfield
Richmond
2022 SEASON AVG
23.7 Disposals
2.7 Tackles
5.2 Clearances

The star midfielder has played 11 games thus far in 2022, three of which he left early with injury.

In the nine games where Prestia has played at least a half of football, Prestia has helped Richmond to six wins.

Without Prestia, the Tigers have only won two of their five matches.

Whilst this does give a decent indication of Prestia's importance, this sample size simply isn't big enough to make any conclusions.

Looking further into the numbers, last year the Tigers won 71.4% of their games with Prestia playing a full game and only 28.6% of their games without him.

Whilst there are so many other factors that affect performance, those numbers are absolutely absurd.

Without Prestia, Richmond is a very poor clearance side, finishing 16th in clearances in 2021 and sitting in 16th currently.

However, with Prestia, the Tigers average 9.28 more clearances a game. Now, these are not all accredited to him but the fact that he can free up other stoppage players makes him a massive player for Hardwick's side.

The ex-Sun embodies Dimma's game style of constantly moving the ball forward in a 'surge' like manner.

His ability to get clearances and put pressure on opposition midfielders is of extreme importance for the Yellow and Black.

Without getting the ball forward, the Tigers cannot apply pressure and without pressure, their backline is unable to peel off and intercept the ball.

It is also worth noting that Prestia hasn't dropped below 25 disposals for matches he has been healthy in this year.

This delineates that whilst the Jack Dyer medallist is damaging on the inside, he can also hurt you on the outside.

Dimma has also gone into the effort of praising Prestia's off-field influence on the club on previous occasions.

Prestia kickstarts their game and thus is one of their most pivotal players, if not their most pivotal.

As Hardwick said after Prestia's Yiooken Medal in 2021... "He is just so important to the way (they) play."

Prestia drew plenty of praise post-match from Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

“He’s just crucial to have on the park. Good players don’t grow on trees, especially ones that can transition the way Dion does, and the way he goes about his footy,” Hardwick said in his press conference.

“His ability to bring others into the game is really important.

“We get to see it every week and it’s great to see 60,000 people here today to witness what a great player he is and what a significant contributor he’s been to our footy club since he got here.

“We value him highly in a lot of aspects of his game. . . I think probably outside of our four walls, so to speak, he’s regarded, but he’s not as highly regarded as what we see . . .

“He’s a Best and Fairest winner in a premiership year (2019) and if you think about it, he’s had significant injury over the last couple (of years), but on average, he probably wins those Best and Fairests if he had have played.

“So, we know how good a player he is and it’s important, I think, people are starting to understand what value this guy brings to our footy club.”

The triple Tiger premiership star dominated throughout the four quarters, finishing the match with 30 disposals, 16 contested possessions, a game-high 11 clearances, game-high five centre clearances, game-high six stoppage clearances, two goals, seven score involvements, four tackles and 436 metres gained.

This season, Prestia is averaging 25.2 disposals, 11.7 contested possessions, 6.0 clearances, 3.8 inside-50s, 6.0 score involvements, 3.3 marks, 3.1 tackles and 382.4 metres gained per game.
