TIGER LOCKED IN

RHYAN Mansell has secured a new two-year deal to extend his time at Richmond.

The 23-year-old will remain at Punt Road until at least the end of 2026.

Mansell joined the Tigers via the pre-season supplemental selection period in 2021 after playing for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL.

The Tasmanian played 17 games last year and is now up to 41 AFL appearances, after adding nine games to his name to start 2024.

Mansell won't feature in Dreamtime at the 'G this Saturday night after entering concussion protocols in the loss to Brisbane last weekend. – Josh Gabelich

Operation Yellow and Black bounce-back

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale is buoyant about Richmond’s future prospects.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale is confident the Club can bounce back briskly from this season’s on-field woes.

The Tigers have had a horror injury run in 2024 and are in 17th place on the AFL ladder after 11 home-and-away rounds with only one win.

Gale, however, is buoyant about Richmond’s prospects for next year and beyond.

“The Club’s in a very strong position off the field in terms of its people and their capability, the balance sheet, the culture and those sorts of things, but there is a sense of renewal going on with our (playing) list,” he said on SEN.

“We feel that with the profile of our list, the capability of our list, we can compete. In fact, we had a reasonable side against Sydney (Round 4) and they’re top of the ladder and we beat them.

“You’re trying to regenerate on the run, and I guess we’ve taken that to extremes this year. Our hand is forced.

“I think if we get a decent run with injury and we develop a few players and a few pop, things can turn around pretty quickly.”

Gale doesn’t subscribe to the view that a club has to completely bottom out in order to be a serious contender again in a few years’ time.

“You always want to stay competitive, and in the hunt,” he said.

“Importantly, thanks to the work of Blair Hartley (General Manager of football talent), we go into this year’s draft with a really, really strong hand . . .

“We haven’t had as much access to the top end (of the draft) for the last decade as some clubs, but it’s our turn.”

Gale believes there is a silver lining to the Tigers’ injury plague this season.

“That’s given us a chance to blood youth, get games into the kids. Good will come from this,” he said.

He likewise feels Adem Yze will benefit significantly from the trials and tribulations he’s experiencing in his first season as Richmond’s coach.

“Adem’s a very experienced football person, he’s been around some successful programs. But there’s nothing like being in the chair,” Gale said.

“There’s an opportunity here for Adem to get his lessons early. It’s a good chance for him to really to grow and learn more about himself and the program and the people around him.

“He’ll be a better coach, more rounded through all the rigours, the pressure.”

Gale urged Richmond’s members and fans to stick with the Cub through this tough time.

“We’ve had a couple of awful losses, and we can’t accept those, and we won’t,” he said.

“It’s not an excuse (the injury crisis), it’s a fact.

“When we’re healthy and we’re fit and we present a reasonable side, we’re more than competitive.

“We’re a competitive football team and I think we will be for years to come.

“But we need to replenish and renew.

“It all depends on the draft and the opportunities that become available.”

Why Richmond champion Dustin Martin will not conduct interviews ahead of game 300

By Anna Pavlou

Dustin Martin will not conduct any interviews ahead of his 300th AFL game for Richmond.

Martin is undoubtedly one of the greatest Tigers to ever pull on the jumper and is currently sitting on 297 appearances for the club.

His collection across those games includes three premierships, three Norm Smith Medals, a Brownlow Medal and four All-Australian blazers.

"Part of the conversation (within Richmond) is that there will be no press conference or interview or along those sort of lines," Fox Footy's Glenn McFarlane said on Tuesday night.

"It is a shame.
"We saw a little bit of that with Buddy (Lance Franklin). But I think we've seen Buddy give back in a sense, since his retirement."

Franklin is one of the greatest players to ever lace up a boot but was famously media-shy and shunned a public profile.

Martin has reportedly agreed to a watered-down celebration ahead of his 300th game.

"What he will do and what he's agreed to do, is be in a photo with the five other living Richmond 300-gamers," McFarlane said.

Martin will be joined in that photo by former teammates Jack Reiwoldt, Shane Edwards and Trent Cotchin, as well as Kevin Bartlett, Wayne Campbell and Francis Bourke

They are just six of the seven Tigers 300-gamers.

On top of that, Richmond has also confirmed the club is producing a Martin documentary, with his former coach Damien Hardwick part of the special video.

It comes as Martin's mega nine-year deal comes to an end in 2024.

Martin is now 32, and questions are naturally arising about what the next chapter of his career holds - whether that be retirement, another year in the yellow and black, or even a move to a rival club.

Despite being lauded by outgoing Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, who will depart at the end of the season to take over as the new leader of the league's 19th franchise in Tasmania, the Tigers may be heading in a direction that doesn't include Martin.

"He's one I'm looking in the eye and saying, 'Dusty, how bad do you want this? Do you want to be playing in a bottom four side next year or not? If you aren't willing for that fight, we'd prefer to move you on'," Matthew Lloyd said on Nine's Footy Classified.

Reid is the guest on Talking Footy tonight

And FWIW,  he won't be leaving WC, reckon a contract extension is likely next year.
