Secret weapons: Who's your side's most underrated player?

Poppy Kelly
Despite having a tough recent run with injury, Richmond ruck Kelly is set to have a real crack at a consistent season. As a handy tap ruck with the likes of Monique Conti, Grace Egan, and Ellie McKenzie at her feet she can improve the Tigers' strength at the contest, while also allowing the athletic Gabby Seymour to be used more across the ground.

Poppy Kelly is rubbish  :help :help

Hopefully this Queenslander Lily Pearce is good. I’m guessing if she can at least handle the footy she is already better than Poppy.  :rollin

New-look Tigers attack ready to pounce in spearhead's absence

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
6 August 2023

AFTER its most successful season in the competition to date, Richmond has been forced to adjust in attack with All-Australian key forward Courtney Wakefield's retirement.

Wakefield has been the heart of the Tigers' attack since the club joined the AFLW in 2020, playing 30 of a possible 37 games and responsible for 23.3 per cent of its marks inside 50 and 19.1 per cent of its goals in that time.

Only captain Katie Brennan has kicked more goals in the yellow and black.

Last season, with Brennan only sporadically available, the reliance on Wakefield was greater than ever. She was responsible for more than a quarter of Richmond's goals in its finals surge, and her 21 marks inside 50 nearly tripled that of her next-closest teammate.

The hole Wakefield's absence creates was never more evident than in season six. Despite registering only seven fewer inside 50s than the season previous, the number of marks inside 50 Richmond took was almost halved with Wakefield only available for four games.

                                   2020 (S4)    2021 (S5)     2022 (S6)       2022 (S7)

Inside 50s                        123             253             246                 363

Marks Inside 50                  32              72               39                   77

Inside 50s resulting
in a mark (%)                  26.0            28.5           15.9                 21.2

Inside 50s resulting
in a Wakefield mark (%)   31.3            18.1            21.2                 27.3

So now, without Wakefield at his disposal, coach Ryan Ferguson must reshape his forward line, with the first step – the recruitment of Caitlin Greiser and Courtney Jones – already achieved.

Greiser has kicked 29 goals across her 34 games and has kicked more goals than any other player in a St Kilda guernsey. In her debut season of 2020, she led the competition for goals, which included a long-range stunner to seal the Saints' maiden win.

Meanwhile Courtney Jones has kicked eight goals in each of her two seasons and has also offered a handy link into attack at times.

The pair's addition signifies a near-complete overhaul of Richmond's attack in its four years in the AFLW. Just two players who kicked a goal in the club's maiden campaign, Brennan and Laura McClelland, remain at the club.

Besides Wakefield, Christina Bernardi was delisted after season six last year, Sabrina Frederick made the move to Collingwood, Tayla Stahl retired and most recently Kodi Jacques was traded to Essendon.

Greiser and Jones will line up alongside an ideally fit Brennan, while emerging teenager Stella Reid will continue to increase her impact. More positively for the Tigers is the increasing attack they are enjoying from midfielders Monique Conti, Grace Egan and Ellie McKenzie who all kicked multiple goals last season.

In addition, Richmond has key forward duo Amelia Peck and Shelby Knoll waiting in the wings.

Despite having all the right assets at its disposal, replacing an All-Australian forward target is no mean feat, and will certainly take some time. But this year is a change for a new-look Richmond forward line to emerge as the club works to make its second finals series in as many seasons.

AFLW Tigers draw with Saints in match sim

By Richmond Media
12 August 2023

Richmond AFLW drew with St Kilda in a match simulation at RSEA Park on Friday, the final score reading 5.5 (25) apiece.

The Tigers and the Saints played out three 20-minute periods followed by a 15-minute period, with no time on.

Richmond fans got a glimpse at recruits Caitlin Greiser, Molly Eastman and Courtney Jones, as well as draftee Shelby Knoll and replacement players Charli Wicksteed and Lilly Pearce, who all featured throughout the contest.

Despite back-to-back Saints majors in the final quarter, a late goal from Richmond's Katelyn Cox tied up the score at full time.

Cox was among the Tigers' best, stationed up forward where she was smart, reliable and tackled hard.

St Kilda got away early in the first quarter with the opening goal of the hit-out, before classy skipper Katie Brennan booted Richmond's first out of the ruck later that term.

Monique Conti and Eilish Sheerin were involved throughout, and Ellie McKenzie was explosive from the get-go, looking set for a big season. A highlight of the quarter came when McKenzie hit up Caitlin Greiser inside-50 with a pin-point pass, Greiser then taking an impressive mark.

Sarah D'Arcy was tough in the contest all day and took a strong contested mark inside 50, but wasn't able to make the distance.

This continued throughout a scrappy second quarter, as the Tigers had multiple shots on goal but couldn't convert.

Newly-appointed vice-captain and ruck Gabby Seymour lifted the team around her, while wing Kate Dempsey showed her pre-season fitness and was clean and tidy.

Richmond was five-points down at half-time but turned things around in the third term, locking the ball inside its forward 50 and booting three goals to give themselves a seven-point lead at the final change.

As she approaches her third AFLW season, Stella Reid looked confident in the Tigers' forward line, converting a set-shot with ease before McKenzie also slotted one from a similar spot.

Wicksteed showcased her damaging speed running through the midfield, while Eastman has slotted in well into Richmond's defence.

Star recruit Greiser, an All Australian and former AFL Women’s Leading Goalkicker, said the Tigers showed plenty of positives in the hit-out against her old side.

"I think the girls played really well and we worked well together," she said.

"There's going to be so many learnings to come from today, we'll go back and look at the vision and work on the positives and the things we need to work on as well.

"I felt confident to get out there and play my role... And I'm really proud of the group's effort and how we went as a team.

"Looking forward to going interstate with the girls next week, it's exciting to bond and creating that culture. Travelling together is really important, and I already feel like they're my family."

The Tigers final pre-season challenge will see them travel to Sydney to face GWS next Friday at Blacktown International Sports Complex from 4.05pm.

A one point lead at 3/4 time.

Richmond    0.1    2.2     3.2-20
GWS           0.3    1.4     2.7-19

Goals: Brennan, Greiser, ?

Got out to a nine point lead during the 3rd qtr but in the last 5 mins we couldn't get it out of our backline.

Centre clearance to start the last. Egan wins the HTB free, goes long and Courtney Jones collects and snaps the goal.

26 - 19
