Cotchin needs help or risks burnoutFoxsports
March 23, 2016RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says Trent Cotchin could be forced to retire within three years if the Tigers do not ease his massive midfield burden.
Cotchin has admitted he must change his game after a season in which the Tigers again ran aground in the finals.
Too much of the heavy lifting has been left to the Tigers captain, a 185cm, 85kg player described by his coach as a “battering ram”.
The Tigers have effectively recruited Andrew Moore and Jacob Townsend as protectors for Cotchin, believing he needs some inside bulls to support him.
Hardwick said this week the game would take a dramatic toll on Cotchin if they did not change his game.
“You look at his best year in 2012 when he came second in the Brownlow, he had bigger bodied mids in Daniel Jackson and Shane Tuck. We have missed those players,’’ he said.
“We have added a couple of guys of similar ilk in Andrew Moore and Townsend. We have probably been asking Trent to fulfil a role for his body size that he is incapable of doing.
“If we want to continue down that track the guy is going to be finished at 27 or 28 because the guy is a battering ram.
“We feel as a club we haven’t done what is required to help protect him in that area but we have tried to address some of those needs.”

Hardwick told Fox Footy Cotchin was the overwhelming choice as captain despite criticism of his leadership.
“Our players and coaches pick our captain and Trent was by far that choice.”
Richmond’s injuries have undermined the club’s determination to get off to the hot start that has eluded them in the past three seasons.
After Carlton the Tigers take on Collingwood, Adelaide at Etihad Stadium and West Coast at Subiaco Oval.
Last year Richmond started 2-4, in 2014 it was 3-10 and in 2013 they split the first six games.
“We are of the belief if we get the process right from the early rounds we can build to get another chance,” Hardwick said.
“We have just got to make sure we get the good start we are after.
“We haven’t had a good start in the last three years, the best we have been is 3-3.
“There is no doubt if you start well you will finish well. We are looking to get off to a fast start.”
Richmond’s focus after three successive elimination finals losses is boosting its scoring power even though no key foil has emerged for Jack Riewoldt.
“We have always felt we have had capable players in Ty Vickery, Ben Griffiths and Liam McBean but it is going to be a key-forward-by-committee approach,’’ he said.
“Whoever is the hot hand at selection will play.
“We are looking for two more goals a game. How you get those goals is the hard thing.
“It is through clearances and turnovers and we are working on a number of elements of our game.
“From clearances we have to get better and we have to score more from centre-forward turnovers.”
