Tigers lock on Dustin Martin
Jay Clark | Reuters Sun Oct 04

RICHMOND is poised to partner midfield gem Trent Cotchin with another outstanding onballer from next month's draft.

Clean-skilled midfielder Dustin Martin has firmed as the Tigers' target after testing brilliantly at the AFL Draft Camp in Canberra this week.

The well-balanced onballer, who averaged 21 touches in the national championships, posted the second-fastest 20m sprint time and equal second-best kicking test score.

Richmond recruiting chief Francis Jackson said the club was unlikely to use its first-round pick to draft a top key forward, such as John Butcher.

"We think we did a fair bit of planning last year with our forwards, we took Jayden Post (No. 26) and Ty Vickery (No.8 ) with our first and second picks," Jackson said.

"By taking them that put us in a good position with our talls. It (key position) is certainly something we will look to bolster but we are confident they (Post and Vickery) are going to be good players."

He said it was critical the club got quality players with two picks (3 and 19) inside the top 20.

"We had a dismal year so we needed to get something out of it," Jackson said.

Essendon is also on the hunt for a young gun onballer.

Bombers football manager Paul Hamilton said: "That certainly is one of our priorities.

"This draft has got some good midfield depth and talent and we feel if we can get a couple of good quality mids, that is going to help us long-term."

oh thank god, i like to see a certainty with that pick three. The kid is good, and should play first round. Although we need a key position i wouldn't mind seeing Bastinac's name getting called out at 19 either.

While I'd love to see Martin as a Tiger after the draft, there's nothing that says we'll pick him other than 'he tested well'.  So did Gary Rohan.  Are we picking him now?

Firstly why does the RFC always feel the need to tell the world what we are doing beforehand  :scream. Let's hope Butcher doesn't take 15 marks and have 10 shots at goal at AFL level or we'll be laughed at again  :-\.

Anyway Martin reminds me of a mixture of Dal Santo in the way he moves and understands the game and Leon Cameron in that he kicks equally well on either foot. One thing I've noticed watching the above footage again is Martin is always either at or forward of the ball. How is Martin's defensive pressure? Does he run as hard back to defend as he does forward to win or receive the footy?

we are picking Martin based on his efforts at the Nathan Buckley inspired draft camp.

Ive seen the footage and yes he looks great but Butcher should be our go, which ive said from day one.

So many forwards have trouble kicking early but still come up with the goods when needed. Stuey Lowe was arguably the worst kick in the league and look how he changed his kicking around.

We are absolutely kidding ourselves if we think Jack R and Morton are going to do it on their own. We need another forward and fast.

Okay but we need Rhan Hooper, Nicoski, Joel McDonald and Mark Seaby because if we go to the draft we will have no experience in the squad and these blokes are reknowned for their precise kicking?  :ROTFL :ROTFL :ROTFL
