Top 4 Draft Picks
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:43:55 PM »
Watching the Freo - Melb game.

A bit was said about Martin and how we could have got Moribitto and Butcher etc.

Martin starred in a poor side against arguably the best team going around if not easily a top 3 side at full strength. Martin had 26 touches and 5 tackles.

As it stands now Moribitto in an OK Freo side has had 1 kick and 2 handballs against an average Melbourne at half time. Scully 4 touches, Trengove 4 touches.

I'm not here to blow smoke up Martins backside but if it was the other way around with Martin not even having half a dozen touches in a half, we'd have the same old posters letting everyone know how stuffed we are and how hopeless we are. Just a very very small victory to the RFC hope there are many more to come.

as one who wanted morabito i would agree in martin  it seems we picked a very good player.  but sheesh to say who is the better pick after one nab cup game  well that sort of thing usually comes back and bites you on the arse.
lets talk about it in 3 yrs time.

Yep you can't judge a kid by his first NAB Cup game but it's pleasing from our point of view that Martin virtually found twice as much of the ball as his peers and more importantly used it well. He was the only one of two 2009 draftees to have more than 15 disposals and the only teenager to do so as the other was Freo's mature rookie Barlow from Werribee who had 29 disposals.

Martin     26
Scully      15 (11 handballs)
Trengove  11
Morabito    5

Not top 4 picks but Jetta and Duncan had decent promising debuts by the look of it.

It's going to be our mid-range picks though that will determine how successful last year's draft was for us. Astbury looks a promising type in the couple of hitouts he's had so far but we haven't seen any of the rest yet play a full game.

There's a "Melbourne should've taken Martin" thread already up on Bigfooty's main board lol.

The Dee's are a looong way off. Bailey into his third year, the players are still making bad decisions (if it were Richmond, it'd be bad skills if you listen to commentators  ::)) and they're way too young still.

before i was banned at BF i wrote the one positive for me from the NAB cup was, I'd rather get smacked by the hawks by 12 goals than get pantsed by freo by 50 pts. Gee they are shocking

at this very early stage Doc looks to be 12months ahead of the others, scully looks to be bloody small out there, if I was a dee I'd hope he isn't like that young Hawthorn player No 3 or 4 pick who has not got much bigger since draft day.

very happy indeed with our pic :thumbsup

Trengove was my No.1 pick prior to the draft. He had the more developed body compared to Scully and had played open age League footy in the SANFL in a side that came runners up. Scully from memory was only 74kg so he really needs to add 6kgs.

Yep the Hawks were on big time for our game. They had been talking it up so it wasn't just a NAB glorified practice match for them. Plus their big guns had a longer and more importantly uninterrupted preseason unlike last year. They went out to send a message to the rest of the comp. against a young inexperienced side like ours. We won't be the only side to get pantsed by Hawthorn this year.

Xavier Ellis?

The Hawks nailed one draft (2004) and got Cyril at 13, but apart from that their drafting has been quite terrible.

Reminds me a bit of Rich in terms of body and skills does our young Martin. People overlooked Rich because of his so called reduced chance to improve. For mine though, if a player is solid at 18 with skills to burn then why won't you take our the guess work of potential improvement and claim a ready-made player from the start. The worst that could happen is he only improved fractionally which made him a very good player rather than a exception one while someone like a Scully will take years to catch up to Martin in size and may never reach the potential he showed in his youth.

I'm wrapped with our recruitment this year (for once!!!) and can see Martin making an immediate impact in the middle along side Lids, Cotch, Foley, Cuz and perhaps Bling (if Farmer takes his place on the HFF).

Talking of Top 4 draft picks if we through Bling on the wing we would have 4 top 4 draft picks all in the middle of the ground. Add a top 8 draft pick as a ruck in Vickery and our engine should be roaring in a few years!

Would just like a few higher order picks to step up and challenge these guys for ability at either end of the ground too!
