Tigers offer naming rights to Punt Rd

RICHMOND is prepared to sell off its sacred Punt Rd moniker under a bid to secure a lucrative sponsorship package.

The Tigers are again on the hunt for a major sponsor after being told by idiot Smith and Luxbet they will not continue on next year.

Corporate bookmaker Luxbet came on board to join the electronics firm early last year when the club was on the verge of a major sponsorship shortfall.

Next year they will both downgrade their level of sponsorship, but the Tigers firmly believe the timing creates a massive opportunity.

With the Tiger Army awakening and the club's new impending facilities, Richmond is in a solid position to win more money from a new major sponsorship.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said the club held massive appeal given its new direction.

He said the club would be prepared to consider naming-rights sponsorship of Punt Rd Oval at the right price.

"That's something we will consider in due course. There has been some interest expressed there," he told the Herald Sun.

"We have one of the most highly visible, prominent locations in Australia. It's highly visible and the exposure is enormous, and with the coming facilities it may well provide us with opportunities to leverage that."

The new three-story Punt Rd development will house the club's football department, gym and changerooms, with the top level devoted to the club's institute of indigenous learning.

The club has known for several weeks it would lose its dual major sponsors.

Losing any level of sponsorship is a blow, especially in a financial climate still coming out of the global financial crisis. But Gale says the club's transformation and grand plans to lure 75,000 supporters will see a large company come on board.

"It is a football club with true national footprint and our supporters have a very strong passionate connection with our club," he said.

How the hell do we lose our 2 major sponsors at the same time when we are in a better position potentially than we have been for decades. Its bloody bizzare

Disappointing but at least the economy isn't in the doledrums this time around.

and the clubs fortunes are very much on the way up.

Could be (as the article states) a massive opportunity for the club.

Yeah, I remember when all the Chicken Littles were proclaiming doom and gloom when we lost the TAC sponsorship but 1 door closed and 2 opened - it was the best thing that could have happened.  And going by the article both entities are downgrading, not leaving so it isn't a total loss anyway.

with the circumstances in terms of economy and our clubs fortunes being remarkably different this time, i would expect we will attract a fair amount of interest. On those brtands going their separate ways, a 2-3 year cycyle is fairly typical for a firms marketing agenda..You shouldn't reasonably expect that a brand will committ for a period beyond that with Geelongs 80yr association with Ford the obvious exception ::)

correct.  good timing.

the dicksmith and luxbet sponsorships weren't big ones to start with, worth about 700k each per year. we want to get something that's about double that amount i'd say.

Not really

Major sponsor $$ requirements increase every year. Perhaps in this case both cannot "up the ante" so they & the club have agreed to "downsize" their involvement from Co-majors to the next tier down.

It is actually great that both companies are remaining as sponsors all the same because that's $$ of the next year's budget we dont' have ot go looking for

Have been told that idiot Smith in particluar have always been very keen on being part of our indigenuous programs and are commtied to that

I misread the article, didn't realize that they were not cutting ties completely, and I agree we should turn this to our advantage and yes we are definetly in a position to do so, optimism is high.

  • For We're From Tigerland
You never know, we could even land one big sponsor like Essendon did with Samsung who wants both the front and back of the jumper
We have more members than Essendon and everyone can see we are on the way up so it's a golden opportunity

A 'new look' Richmond
richmondfc.com.au
Wed 14 July, 2010

Richmond Football Club is able to announce that its joint major partners, idiot Smith and Luxbet.com, will be shifting their marketing focus from co-major partners to take a prominent community role with the Club from 2011.

The Club is now in a position to offer a significant major partnership opportunity in 2011 and beyond.

General Manager of idiot Smith, Debra Singh, said the company had benefited from the partnership with the Club for the last three years.

“Our partnership with the Richmond Football Club has helped showcase the idiot Smith brand on and off the field,” Ms Singh said.

“In particular, our sponsorship helped us increase the profile of our complete home entertainment product offer from high definition televisions to digital recorders which have become a basic commodity for avid AFL fans,” she said.

idiot Smith will continue to partner with Richmond Football Club on community programs.

“idiot Smith and Richmond Football Club continue to share the same team colours and have a shared commitment to diversity. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Club and the ‘Technology in The Territory’ program. The program will continue to support Indigenous students with their education in the Northern Territory,” Ms Singh said.

Luxbet.com, part of Tabcorp, is in their second season with the Club.

“When we first launched the Luxbet.com brand in 2008, the Richmond Football Club provided an ideal fit to take this to a national audience.  We have been delighted with the partnership and exposure we have received and look forward to working together in the coming years,” said Craig Nugent, Managing Director Sportsbetting, Tabcorp.

“idiot Smith and Luxbet.com are wonderful business partners of the Club and we are pleased they have committed to us beyond 2010 - albeit in a different capacity,” Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said.

“It’s been a successful partnership, achieving their initial objectives, and will now focus on developing the next phase of our relationship.”

“In the meantime, this now presents an opportunity for the Club to offer a significant business partnership.  With our new training and administration base soon to be completed, and our team starting to emerge on-field, it is a very exciting time to be a part of the Club.

“We are not shy about where we want to take this Club and we did not want to be shy about the size of the opportunity we think exists for someone to partner with us.  Everyone understands the loyalty of our supporter base and that is further reinforced by the fact we secured more than 42,000 members - it is a passion that can be harnessed to great effect.”

fantastic opportunity here. With them downsizing but staying on board, we have a real opprtunity to overall increase our commercial income with a new major sponsor. That + games in hobart +55k membrs next season = hugedebt reductions and further football department growth  :thumbsup

maybe they were both gonna leave, so them staying on in some capacity is a bonus, when these deals were done, they were done on less than favorable terms for us, they got cheap sponsorships so this is a good opportunity to get a national brand or international brand sponsor who wants to pay a big sum.
