Hardwick apologises for rubbish game
By Jennifer Witham
6:20 PM Sat 02 Jul, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has cancelled the Tigers' review process this week and says he never wants to talk about Saturday's 103-point capitulation to Carlton at the MCG again.

After a dark afternoon for the club, Hardwick was visibly shaken as he faced the media post-match and admitted he was shocked at the way his players gave up.

He was then asked how he would handle his young group, which was silent in the rooms post-match, as they faced the fall-out from the result.

After considering his response for a moment, he gave a simple answer. It would be wiped from memory and they would start afresh again this week.

"We spoke after the game and I just said, I don't ever want to speak about this game again," he said.

"That's as poor as we've played for a hell of a long time and we've just got to move on.

"I've got no doubt they're disappointed but there's no point dwelling on that rubbish, to be perfectly honest.

"Bin the review. It's not us. It's disappointing but it's not us."

Hardwick addressed the fans that turned out to the club's home game - and those who made a donation to the Fighting Tiger Fund (the quest to raise $6 million to erase the club's debt).

"Two words - we apologise. That's it," he said.

"It was probably the first time this year we haven't had a crack, our guys, and I'm very disappointed not only for the players but also for the people who put in the hard-earned dollars to try and get us back to where we need to belong.

"To dish up that performance is very disappointing. Very disappointing. The opposition were too good.

"I don't know …  the one thing I can put my hand up and say is I thought our guys for the first 14 rounds of the year genuinely had a crack regardless of the scoreboard, and I thought today they didn't do that."

In breaking down the result, Hardwick admitted the Tigers had no winners across the ground and were sorely beaten in a number of areas.

The final stats sheet said the Blues won the clearances 53 to 31, the inside 50s 67 to 40, the tackle count 66 to 49 and contested possessions 148 to 113.

"It was all of it; our tackling effectiveness was poor, we couldn't get a hand on them, the contested possession work was poor, our inability to take the game on was poor," he said.

"I could go on and keep driving all these stats but at the end of the day, the guys have got to want to have a crack and have got to want to play, and that was really unlike us today and it was really disappointing."

He said the result wasn't considered a setback in his side's development and he didn't believe there was a 100-point difference between the two sides.

After conceding moving players around to cover the bevy of in-form Carlton players was "like shifting chairs on the Titanic", he said changes to the side for next week's clash with Essendon would have a similar effect.

"Dan Connors will probably play at Coburg at some stage, his first or second game for the year. Matthew Dea is the same, so at the end of the day you can change your personnel but you still expect some effort," he said.

"Changing personnel is not going to help us. We just need some effort."

Says it all really, there just wasn't any! I can forgive if they take it on, which is exactly what they didn't do.

How about an apology to the fans from Brendan Gale Gary March and co for the effort today also.

Too much media since our dreamtime win.

Whether its inflated ego's or merely getting ahead of ourselves club as a whole on and off field needs to

refocus on the short and long term goals in place in order to make the club successful again.

Apologies that's all they can do its kind of hollow on a day they promoted us as this 19th man poo and the

FTF. Hollow from the footy club, very very very hollow. The fans have every reason to feel aggrieved

after this. Just shows how far we have to go as a footy club.

Yes. It was poor. Herslop is touted as a tough man by many on this forum. But after all the chances he's had and after beginning on the bench until Grif gets injured and what does give us? ....... Nothing.
0 tackles again for our so called hard nut.

Should NEVER be allowed to wear the jumper again. I'd sack him for being an imposter.

The club that keeps giving.

Soz for the double post but we were shown up in a number of crucial areas, highly inflated wins against Essendon and Fremantle disguised our achilles heel, Essendon are slightly pooter than we are, Freo choke on the road.

Achilles Heel 1: RUCK, as in we have nothing, Browne is a battler, full of heart but is a 80's dinosaur, rumbles round.........

Achilles Heel 2: BACKLINE, as above. Rance gives all, don't get me started on McGuane........ the sooner Grimes comes back

Achilles Heel 3: CLEARANCE, smashed this week, smashed every week, we need Foley to get back to his 41 Possession best

"Bin the review. It's not us. It's disappointing but it's not us."

These are the quotes that will hurt Hardwick. It IS us, he misses the point. We have a history of not turning up to play when there is pressure to perform.
They need to review the game and understand what happens when our players crap themselves in the spotlight.
Has anyone wondered why only 59k turned up when 62k turned a week earlier against the Demons?
Tiger fans already know what is going to happen and they are sick of the humiliation.

Even Carlton fans can't be bothered sticking it to us - there was more sting to zdemons fans in the outer banter than yesterday.

We are crap because of games like yesterday.
And we continue to be crp because coaches get sucked into thinking it's "not us" or it's " un-Richmond like"

I think Hardwick is a fabulous coach but we need so much more than a fabulous coach to fix the cancer
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Good call Mr Tigra and Darth Tiger. Actions speak louder than words.

100% agree, the players should be made watch the game over and over and over again! Every gutless effort highlighted over and over and over again. It should be ingrained into there heads that a performance like that can NEVER happen again!!!!

On ABC radio after the game the commentators said Harwick should go over some aspects of the game but should focus on next week rather than dwelling on this atrocious game. The commentators were saying after the first three goals the side had lost all hope of winning and played accordingly and needed a boost in confidence. For me the side needs to come out for the rest of the year and play with passion. I don't care if lose they have just got to play with passion and intensity

The damage is done.
Were pathetic.
Nothing will reverse that.

Players should be made to watch replays of the game in their jocks, tied to the goal posts at Punt Road while the members take turns at throwing ice cold buckets of water over them
