Dimma's dissection (weekly video match review)
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:12:55 PM »
Dimma has a video email newsletter now for members. You would've got the first one during this week.

* Played 4 of the top 5 sides and haven't been able to get the results we were after. 8 minute lapses cost us in each game.

* All sides cop those 8 minutes bursts against them but we need to get better at not letting it hurt us so much on the scoreboard.

* We know we've dramatically improved since last year. This time last year these sides were smashing us by 10 goals. We've been competitive and honest for the whole of games this year. The gamestyle has come on and developed. Our ability to control the ball is very good. The scribes say we are poor disposers of the ball but we are ranked Top 4 in disposal efficiency so that dispels that myth. We do turn it over like all sides - we just need to not let it hit us on the scoreboard. Our defensive sides have definitely improved - scores against us have gone down significantly; ball pressure has been a hell of a lot better and our tackle pressure has improved also. Credited Ross Smith and the other assistant coaches.

* Forward line has been a struggle this year. Jack and Ty by their own admission can play better but also our ball use inside forward 50 has been poor prior to the Eagles game where it improved. As our ball use inside forward 50 improves it will make Jack and Ty's job easier.

* Pleased with our midfield depth - Grigg, Foley, Tuck, Conca and Ellis have been enormously important to us. We don't rely on Cotch and Martin playing well every weekend which is a positive sign for a young side.

* How do we improve? By start winning games. It's no longer good enough to just compete; we need to win now. We've put all our planning and preparation into this week's game and we're confident about getting the result.

* Thanks for your support. We are all trying our backsides off. There's good spirit within the playing group which is a credit to Newman as captain.

From the coaches box - Round 8 (weekly video email)

Danny Daly this week...

* From the coaches box the crowd sounded like 75k were at the ground. The noise was so loud after each goal.

* We could have easily kicked 8-9 goals in first quarter. We switched the play well and kept the ball inside 50.

* Defence has really stood up this year. Last year we allowed too many goals kicked against us. The acquisition of Ross Smith has played a big part in the turnaround and Leppa's work has helped Rance and Grimes. Lids going into the midfield has put more pressue on Newy and Houli but they have handled it well.

* We brought in a runner in Jacko to replace the injured Vickery. Used and rotated Lids, Cotch and Dusty more up forward with Vickery not there. That created a mismatch and freed up Jack and Miller more. Also allowed Miller to go into the ruck.

* Jacko tagged Ryan O'Keefe out of the game in the last uqarter which stopped their half-back rebound.

* Daly praised the midfield which he overseas. We are No.1 or No.2 in clearances in the AFL. Big Ivan has played a big part in that.

* Dreamtime becomes an important game. A win could put us in the Top 8. Essendon going well as anyone in the midfield and with their spread. The win over the Swans was nice but we need to move on from that and focus on the Bombers. Boys need to step up for Newy's 200th. The gate is shared this week so the more supporters that turn up the best for us not only off-field but on-field cheering the boys on. We appreciate what you the supporters and members have done so far but make sure you get to the game and get behind the boys.

Once again Jacko has filled a valuable role for us that doesn't show up on the stats.

In our best 22 every week IMHO.

We will need to shut down Cale Hooker's run and carry in the 4th quarter next week. Jacko is the man to do it.

Assistant Coach MARK WILLIAMS this week.

After a disappointing loss at the Dreamtime game on Saturday, Mark shares his thoughts on a midfield which is playing well, the hard work of Ivan Maric and how Shane Edwards stepped up in front of goal.

He also touches on the tough challenge we have against the Hawks at the MCG on Saturday.

Does he talk about how poor our fwd line has been this year under him?
