RICHMOND put a horror three weeks of football to rest with a 48-point win over the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night at the Gabba.

A five-goal burst in the second quarter gave the Tigers a 20-point half-time lead, which they converted into a 20.12 (132) to 12.12 (84) victory in front of a crowd of 22,311.

The Lions needed a strong start to the second half but Richmond made the third quarter its own with six goals, four of them going unanswered.

The Lions, who have now lost 11 consecutive quarters of football, fought back in the final quarter and kicked five unanswered goals to close the margin to only 14.

But two goals to Robin Nahas and Shane Tuck in the space of 30 seconds fired the Tigers into a six-goal scoring spree and saw them blow out their lead once more.

Richmond's record against Brisbane is impressive, having now lost only one match from their past ten meetings.

The Tigers moved four points clear of the Lions on the ladder but they remain in 12th position.

Robin Nahas and Luke McGuane top-scored for the visitors with three goals apiece.

Ruckman Ivan Maric (41 hit-outs, 16 disposals, one goal) and midfielder Brett Deledio (33 disposals, one goal) also put in robust performances.

Lions captain Jonathan Brown led his side with nine marks, four goals and 14 disposals, and was supported strongly by Daniel Rich (22 disposals) and Dayne Zorko (19 disposals, nine tackles, two goals).

There was controversy when Alastair Lynch labelled Simon Black's relegation to the sub's role as "staggering".

With Black forced to sit out 2 1/2 quarters in the lime green vest, the Tigers led by as much as 45 points late in the third quarter but survived a Black-inspired Brisbane rally to claim the battle of the big cats.

Black could only watch the Lions get schooled by the Tigers in the midfield in the first half to set-up the match-winning buffer.

He is the king of clearances and would have helped stem the flow of first-use footy for the visitors, who led the clearance count 12-7 at quarter-time and 27-16 at halftime.

Significantly, four of Richmond's first-half goals came from stoppages and the other four came from turnovers.

Black's peerless ability to win the footy from stoppages and use the ball well are two of his trademarks and were sorely missed as the Tigers got out to a 20-point lead at halftime.

The Tigers kicked five unanswered goals in the second term but Brown kept the home side in the contest.

Richmond should have been further in front given its dominance of the first half. However, the Tigers cashed in after halftime and appeared to put the result all but beyond doubt with a 38-point lead at three-quarter time.

1. Yabba Gabba doo
 Richmond might start asking to move more matches to the Gabba after Saturday night's win continued an amazing run at the ground. The Tigers made it five straight at the Lions' home with the 48-point win. They have not lost in the Queensland capital since round 18, 2004, when the Lions got up by 18 points. It's a direct contrast to the Tigers' exploits in Far North Queensland, where they have lost twice in Cairns against Gold Coast in the past two seasons.

2. Heart-stopping Hardwick
This one had a happy ending, but even when the game looks beyond doubt, the Tigers do their best to make it interesting. After losing the past three weeks by less than a kick, poor old Damien Hardwick looked like facing another heart attack when he watched a 46-point lead late in the third term dwindle to just 14 early in the last. But this time there would be no mistake, as the Tigers regained composure and slammed home six goals straight to allow their coach and fans to breathe easy.

3. Sub-terrain blues
The decision to use Simon Black as the Lions' sub was a strange one. If Michael Voss hoped to put more responsibility on his younger midfielders, it back-fired spectacularly as they were smashed at the stoppages before Black's third quarter entrance. Once the Brownlow medallist entered, things changed rapidly. In a quarter-and-a-half he finished with 15 disposals and helped change the entire momentum of the match.

4. Lions still lagging
For all their improvement this season the Lions have been nothing more than poor against quality opposition. They are 6-0 against bottom four teams but sport a 1-11 mark against teams above them on the ladder. Look a little deeper and the reading gets even worse. Of those 11 losses, only twice have they been within four goals, and on average have lost by 51 points. The Lions are still a long way from top-eight material.

5. Riewoldt Show? No
The Tigers are starting to show they're far more than the Jack Riewoldt Show up forward. The Richmond spearhead had an engrossing duel with Lion Daniel Merrett and split the points with his 14 disposals, eight marks (four contested) and 2.3. But the Tigers found their goals from numerous other avenues. They had 13 goalkickers in total, including three from redeployed big man Luke McGuane. "It's something we've worked on for a couple of weeks, or over the course of the year, having those midfielders rotate through forward. We always knew they'd kick a couple of goals," coach Damien Hardwick said.

Agree, was watching the first half tonight. And was waiting for the ump to blow the whistle and penalise for breathing but low and behold they put em away and gave both teams a fair go.
